I have a porter cable 1/4 shank arbor & some 3-wing cutters that I got from Lowes one time when I was Picking up a extra laminate trimmer. The arbor works well for me with the 3 wing cutters for simple shaft cutting, although I have no tried It with any 6 wings yet. I've heard they cut smoother, and have been wanting to try some out though.
Edit: I was mistaken the cutters & arbor that I have are Bosch not Porter cable.
The Whiteside 6801, with the router speed dialed in to fine tune any harmonics, cuts like a laser. You will be able to start the sanding with 400 grit paper.
I bought the Whiteside on amazon . got 15 of them and an extra arbor . the price is way better than most . Look for 6 wing slot or drawer slot cutter ...
I am going to get some wing cutters to hopefully eliminate some chatter I get when using the 3/4" straight cutter on shafts. It looks like the Whiteside 6801 seems to be prefered on this thread. I have also read another thread where the Freud 4 wing cutters were very popular. What do you guys think are the best between the 2? Also I noticed on Atlas the Monster cutter is very thin and then they also have a thicker cutt one. Is there an advantage to the thinner cutter? Less push on the shaft and so on....
Even though they are made with quality, you may want to find a toolman in your area to 1) sharpen them from time to time and 2) to true up the cutting edges with respect to the arbor. Mine came from Whiteside with at least one cutter protruding .01" - 0.015" - easily enough to see as you spin the cutter near your stock. Why have 6 wings if only one is doing most of the cutting? And (at least IMHO) that long(er) cutter contributes to push off on the workpiece. I'd be interested to hear others chime in on that theory.
I have two cutters (1/4") and two arbors. When I send one off to be sharpened I leave it on the arbor so the toolman can true it to my arbor.
I uses a 4 winger from Magnate and get them sharpened locally.
I get it OD'd and have the hook reduced .
6801 is nice too but the diameter is too small for my liking.
Thank you to all that posted. I think that I will go with the CC small cutter since it says it already is OD'd and I'm not sure there is a person that can sharpen them locally.
I use the 3wing cutters from Pioneer though Western Tool Supply, sharpest out of the box that I have found. Have about a dozen on arbors. Send them in batches to a friend with a stone faceting diamond wheel. He indexes and grinds the 3 faces so they are even and finished down to 4000 grit.
