Your Cue Stick History?

Joe - I started with a Viking... bought at Lord and Lady in Glen Ellyn... circa 1966... brand new for ~$65. Still have it. ;)

From there, a couple of McDermotts... still have one, an RS-3.

First custom was a Dave Jones... tulipwood/thuya burl/curly maple 6-pointer, two veneers, with ivory inlays bought in 2003. Still have it as well... recently refinished and currently in a display case in my den.

Current shooter is a Bob Frey SP.

In reserve, I also have a beautiful 4-point, three veneer burbinga Jensen w/Hoppe ring and a BCM ebony 4-point, four veneer w/Hoppe ring as well. They're in the display case as well.

Dick was Queer?

IIRC "DICK the QUEER" had a thing for cylindrical objects with flared ends:eek:

He was that way? I never knew that. I did put that cue in his back room. If he was like that I'm glad I never got the cue back. Wasn't it Dick, Angie and Chuck at VPBA?

Yep, Joe... I was strictly... and totally, a banger back then. Used to play a lot of Odd Ball with the homies... Bob Placko, Greg Hill, John Ellis and a few others. We had fun bangin' 'em around for a couple of hours. It was a great place to beat the mid-day Chicago summer heat and humidity... cuz I worked nights back then. Take care, Joe.

Differant DICK, I think.

"DICK the QUEER" was "old" (35-40:rolleyes: ), big (6'5", 250lb+) and a pedophile. Before any of our "crew" could buy beer we would take advantage of his queerness to keep us supplied. Once we were able to score our own (13-14) he was personna non grata. On good days he'd get ridiculed, egged, etc. His orientation was common knowledge.

Was Angie the cook that made the dyno grilled cheese sandwitches?

Was the name of LORD and LADY changed to SWANK or vice versa? On Roosevelt Rd? What was the name of the place in WHEATON (KEOGH played there) that was open for a minute?

Yes, Angie

The best burgers too! She was there for as long as I was going in there. I left a few years before it got torn down. My brother in law had a fireplace built out of the bricks from the VPBA. GOOOOD sandwiches for sure!

DAMN... I screwed that up. I typed Lord and Lady but meant Swank. They were different places, Adam. The Swank Club was on Roosevelt Rd. in Glen Ellyn... near the intersection of Park and Roosevelt... right across the street from Arby's. That's where I bought my first cue.

Lord and Lady was in Wheaton... on the main drag going towards downtown if you were entering it from the south. Just checked on a google map... it was on Main St. Sorry about the confusion.

First I had a house cue that Pappy Winkler in Dayton put a brass joint in for me. I played with it for a few years until it got stolen out of a poolroom in Richmond, Indiana. I set it on the table when I went to the bathroom and it was gone when I returned. I was playing a $1 (on the 5) and $2 (on the 9) Ring Game, and there must have been 20 people watching. NOBODY saw a thing! :)

Next cue was a very fancy Adams cue that I played with a few years. I just got tired of it. Then I had Ernie make me a beautiful Tiger Wood custom cue, my first. He put my name in the butt cap. Also stolen out of my car. I then bought a Balabushka for $100 in 1972 that I loved, but when someone offered me $250 for it in Dayton, it was gone. Good move huh. Following that I had a plain Tad that was a wonderful playing cue. Times got tough and I had to sell it too.

Next I had a custom Schrager for several years. Bert made it for Bill Igel, but he never picked it up. So Bert gave it to me instead. I loved that cue and played good with it for maybe ten years. But shame on me, I left it in my car and the car got stolen. They found the car a couple of days later, missing a set of tools and my cue. Bert refused to make me another one. He said I was irresponsible, and maybe he was right.

My last cue is a Josey that I picked up in Reno about ten years ago. I got a good deal on it and planned to resell it. But after hitting some balls with it, I got to liking it, and am still playing with it today.

Lots of other cues in there, just listed the ones I used for players for more than 2 months.

Favorites were the sugartree and masonh cues. The schon was a long time player as was the dz. D17 ranks high up there as well as the original joss n-7 listed third, brought new in the 80's.

Have had a lot of scruggs sneakys over the years, lots of other cues I brought just to sell later. These days I'm waiting on three cues that I plan one keeping for life. If times gets tough that will change of course.

1. aluminum stick made in England
2. Dufferin SP
3. Meucci OL-1- "The Diamond"
4. Joss
5. Jacoby
6. And then it started!! Tim Scruggs, Jeff Olney, Dave Kikel,
Mike Bender, Paul Mottey, and many others.
I usually play with either Scruggs, Shurtz or Ray Shuler Original.
Got 1st stick 40 years ago.

1962 to 1964- house cues off the rack
1964-65 Asia ('Nam) no play
1966-1967- House cues off the rack till I won a two piece put up to cover a century bet-sold it back for double century a week later-I didn't like it much anyway. Bought a McD for 47.00 played it till 1969, stolen.
1969-73- Meuicci cheapo
1973- 79 off and on play, mostly off with the Meucci.
1979-1985- no play
1986-2003: Adams, Helmstetter, McD, Meucci, various oddball cues on home table. Occasional bar box play, some league play
2003-2008 home table play Adam The Ritz cue
Now Tex cue, Tim Scruggs

<edit> I forgot the palmer I played with all of 2006 before I got stupid and sold it in 2007 for 750...... Kick me......

These were my "players", but I've always gravitated back to my Nova, which was the first custom I owned. I had a lot of other cues, but they were mostly for flippin' and trading.

I currently have cues on order with Denali, BCM, Rauenzahn, and Steve Klein. I'm also on several waiting lists... I just realized I MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM (not enough cues and time to use them :D )!

Hey Jay, is that Josey a fancy sneaky pete style? I am playing with a Bob Frey sneaky now, and I love it, but I have heard great things about the way those Josey's hit.

No, it has a steel joint with a gray stained maple butt. And there are diamond shaped inlays in the butt cap. Not a fancy cue, but definitely not a Sneaky Pete either. All cues are never the same hit, even by the same maker. This one happens to have a very pure feel to it that I like.

Keith made me a second shaft a few years back, and it hits a little different then the original shaft. Still good but not the same, just to give you an example.

Once upon a time a elephant that had a baby that grew up big enough to grow tusks. The elephant was on a wild rampage thru the jungle. Possibly trying to escape some poachers. The elephant ran into a tree and knocked the tree over. The blow also killed the elephant. The carcass was found and the tusks and hides was removed. The wood from the tree was used to ship the hide and tusks to a cue maker. The cue maker seen that the wood was good enough to become parts of a cue.

A cue was made that has ivory ferrules, joint and butt cap. The butt was made out of the wood that the stuff was shipped in. The maple shafts came from a tree cut down for a resort in northern Mi. It also has a elephant ear wrap. The tips came from some cow that was slaughtered to be made into McDonald's hamburgers. The rubber end cap came from a old recycled NASCAR tire that once was on the car of a famous driver.

The cue is an environmental friendly cue that was made out of materials that would have otherwise been wasted. I have a letter of authenticity verifying all of the above from the EBay seller.

It now sits in a case in my closet as it is too valuable to take out to the bars.

That is the history of my cue. :D

I have a Josey fancy sneaky pete.
A tad stiff hitting for me but still a really nice hitting stick.
Nice looking stick. Not very sneaky.

They are very nice looking sticks. I was playing with a predator 4k4, before the Frey, but I wanted more feedback. I really like the Frey. Those Josey's look sweet though.
