your favourite player of all time...

My all time favorite is francisco bustamante , I just love watching his presents at the table it's just amazing .

for best ever Mosconi edges Crane by just a hair..

best living Reyes edges Captain Hook by just a hair

Best current...there is Ronnie O'sullivan and then there is everybody else

Pagulyan almost made the list but it doesn't look like he gives a shit anymore
he looks to me like a guy who achieved his dream then gave up

How can you honestly think that Mosconi only edges Crane by just a hair? Mosconi was so much better it's not even funny. During Mosconi's 15 year dominance of the game he owned Crane completely, Crane only won the world title once during that time (1946). Mosconi was like the Federer and Nadal combined of the pool world. Just look at the records. Their long challenge matches were even more lopsided with Mosconi winning by ridiculous scores like 2000-950 and something like 3500-1800. Mosconi was getting double the points Crane was.

Willie Hoppe is high on my list with 51 world champion ships in 46 years:eek:. There is also Walter Lindrum with 57 world records. These two men were born and died just about the same time but on opposite sides of the world. I wonder if they ever met, played or even heard of each other.
Lindrum probably has a cooler resting place.

They most definitely knew of each other. Later in their careers, maybe a couple of years before Lindrums death, they were supposed to play a series of exhibitions together. They negotiated the kind of games they would play, I don't know which, maybe both 3 cushion and English billiards. But lindrum pulled out saying his skills weren't quite up to par and he didn't want the fans to not get their money's worth. So it never happened. Lindrum was well known for always wanting the audience to get every penny's worth of their ticket price.

Mosconi gets my vote because he won Championships in years that there wasnt a Championship. How could you not like that?

I have yet to meet a real poolplayer that didnt say he was an asshole.

Great player,,,,yes.

Ken

Louie was the greatest shotmaker of all time. No one else is close. He fired in long extreme cut shots like they were hangers. And the object ball never rubbed a rail! He had better eyes than a hawk.

"No one else is close"???! I think Cole Dickson was the best shot maker of all time....without a doubt.

My Favorite Players of all Time!

Buddy Hall
Mike Segal
David Matlock
Steve Gumphrey
Brian Atchley
Keith McCready

Because they were all absolutely pool playing machines!

Definitely true, although the Mosconi vs Crane games were much closer prior to the switch to 9 x 4 1/2 foot tables than after.

On 9 x 4 1/2 tables, Willie's balls per inning in 14.1 back then was usually in the 15-18 range, while Irving's was more in the 10-12 range, which would definitely confirm exactly what you have suggested. In any long match, Willie rated to run away and hide from Irving and the rest of his contemporaries.

Only Greenleaf is mentionable with Willie in 14.1. I once read that, although Mosconi had a higher rate of 150 and out victories, Greenleaf was, by a very small statistical margin, the more likely of the two to get out in two innings or less.

Who's your fav. player of all time and why?

Mine is Johnny Archer I love his immense control over the cue ball.

Man! What a tough question!

I will have to give a top 5:

Efren Reyes
Buddy Hall
Nick Varner
Mike Sigel

and........

I just don't know. Those four rattled off like nothing. Can't name a fifth!

Earl the Pearl because he's entertaining, misunderstood, EXTREMELY competitive (like me), and at his best was the greatest 9 ball player to ever step to a table, bar none. At his best, at least in 9-ball, no one could beat him... period.

Mosconi was the greatest of all time overall

Earlier this week, I had a brutal job to get out, and it was a real toughie, but I got it done.

I said to my boyfriend, "I am the best in my industry, bar none," to which he replied, "You mean you're the Thorsten Hohmann of your job?"

In jest, I said, "Why would you choose, of all players, a European to compare me to?"

He then came back with, "Well, then you're the Efren Reyes of your industry?"

"No, silly. I'm the Earl Strickland of my industry. USA, all the way, baby. Right?" and we both laughed.

If I had to pick a favorite player, it wouldn't be too hard to figure out who that would be. ;)

"train"

Michael Coltrain of course!

Why? Because I've hung out and practiced with him a lot. He's taught me technical and mental aspects of the game. He gave me the nickname "Run Out Rodney".

I have only seen a few of Cranes matches but the in ones I saw. he had an awesome presence at the table.. complete confidence and complete command of himself. no guesswork.. I strive to attain a table presence like that.. he's one of my personal favorites
