your opinion on gambling ethics

I think you're being 'nitty' complaining about it:rolleyes: To paraphrase Tom Hanks..."THERE'S NOooo ETHICS IN GAMBLING":groucho:

If you didn't set the terms and conditions beforehand, you really have no right to complain about anything.

Only reason you are complaining is cause you didn't get a chance to win anything after you broke even.

If you won both sets, I highly doubt you would be on here complaining about how this guy quit when he should have given you guys the opportunity to win a 3rd set.

People need to do away with that "unwritten rule" crap.

People can quit whenever they want.

YOU MUST BE A NIT TOO!! YOUR RIGHT, WHEN I SHOW SOME HEART AND GET EVEN, I WOULD LIKE TO THINK I HAVE A CHANCE TO GET MY OPPONENT STUCK TOO AND SEE HOW HE PLAYS FROM BEHIND! YOU DONT KNOW CRAP ABOUT POOL OBVIOUSLY, IF YOU DID YOU WOULDNT HAVE MADE THAT RIDICULOUS STATEMENT.
I'm COMPLAINING BECAUSE BY VIRTUE OF THEM QUITING, IT MEANS I HAD 0 CHANCE OF WINNING ANYTHING, THEREBY NOT ONLY GIVING UP A SPOT, BUT ODDS ON THE MONEY TOO! STICK TO APA OK

what is so hard about getting everything straight before you start playing? It's because a lot of pool players are jones'n so bad to gamble they forget about the most important thing about matching up. Johnnyt

you should know more then most johnny, how many times have you matched up and started playing? Was how long you were going to play even part of the discussion? Not the majority of the time in my experience. If someon had to get up the next morning and said we quit by a certain time win or lose, then thats fine. But usually when nothing is said you just play.

Weight was given, it is gambling.

A good Hustler can give you all the weight in the world, keep you in check with safety ply, and you will loose your fortune to him

As far as your example.....if one of his arms were tied to his side would it be gambling then?

You give your theory a try, and let Mike KICK YOUR A***.

you should look up the definition of a nit sir, I wasn't the one quiting, and as far as his birthday, it was his bday when we started playing, it was his bday when we got drilled 7-1, and it was his bday when we won 2nd set. no issues while they were winning.

I personally think most of you on here are all nits, and probably would do the same thing. lol johnny t you should know exactly where im coming from sir

This is why I would never gamble with friends, never gamble without setting the ground rules, and never have these issues.

BTW, in this case I think you were wrong. I also don't think $50 is a friendly amount. That stops at 5 or 10 bucks if you really must gamble with friends.

I also feel that playing someone close to your speed in any rotation game is gambling.

It looks like you are in the minority here. Have fun being pissed off that you are the only one that plays right.

First off I played mostly by the game. Put up money before each game. If it was sets I would always tell who I was going to play what time my last set would be. If you are playing a stranger and after a few games one player has no chance I can see adjusting fair and if not unscrewing. Johnnyt

Actually you had the chance to win $50 twice. Your assuming that they knew exactly how everything would turn out. Maybe had you won the first set than they still would have played the second. Maybe losing the 2nd would have pissed them off, and they'd have told their girlfriends to piss off, went on tilt and lost $1000 to you.
You made the mistake of losing the first set where you could have made money. Maybe by the time you won the 2nd set his girlfriend nibbled on his ear enough to give him a hard on, and he wanted to go home, when he planned on staying for 5 sets.

It's amazing the rules people have.

You should maybe write a list. I'm guessing your first rule would be:

1. No one is allowed to quit winner.
2. No one is allowed to quit even.

I'm sure you've got a bunch more. You should just start your matches by telling people.."now after we start this match your not allowed to quit until I say so, or you no longer have rent money."
I'm sure you'll get a bunch of action.

And didn't you start off saying you and your buddy had the best of it skill wise? Maybe offering more weight could have kept your fish their.

But I'm just another Nit anyhow.

Don't get your diapers in a wad.
You asked for an opinion, and you got one.
Don't be all bent cause it happens to go against what you THINK should happen.

Not my fault you aren't a front runner.
Maybe if you were, you would have won the 1st set, the 2nd set, and wouldn't be all sorts of salty that you didn't win.

Could have been worse...

It could have been worse, he could have pulled up after being ahead $50. I'm pretty sure you'd be even more pissed than you are about them letting you at least get to even. You had your chance to win money but lost the first set..

Personally, I don't subscribe to any set 'rules' or 'etiquette' when gambling, unless laid out specifically before play begins. If a guy pulls up on me after winning one game or set, so be it, I shouldn't have lost and I only have myself to blame...

If you slow rolled your speed in the first set on purpose, then I guess the hustler got hustled...

Nitmanship

I like learning new words.

But also, don't get all butt hurt because of peoples replies. When you start a thread that you know can be a bit controversial and peoples opinions
on proper gambling etiquette can vary greatly, you are going to get exactly that, different opinions.

If you respond by call others Nits because their opinions are different than what you want to hear, its usually not a good way to make friends on AZ.

But, thanks for the new word. I will definitely be adding that one to my list of words to say to people.

Maybe by the time you won the 2nd set his girlfriend nibbled on his ear enough to give him a hard on, and he wanted to go home, when he planned on staying for 5 sets.

Really? I would have done her in the parking lot, over the tail gate of my truck, sent her on her way and kept playing. There is a way around everything.

It is all in how you handle yourself.

I was traveling and stopped at a bar in a new town. I asked the bar tender if anyone around there played pool for money. A fellow at the end of the bar jumped up and said "I'll play you for $5. I lost the flip and he broke and ran, then broke in the eight and then broke and ran. The fourth rack he broke dry and I got my first shot on a table I had not yet hit a ball on. I got out of line on my last ball and missed but felt good about the way I was playing. He gets out, now I am down $20, he puts his cue back on the wall and says "I'm done." I just smiled shook his hand and thanked him for the game. Now all the sweaters were incensed that he would quit me like that. So they lined up and played me for $5 a game for the rest of the night, for a tidy profit. I might not have been able to beat the first guy, will never know, don't care.

They didn't quit winner... they quit even. And you have a problem with that??? On the guy's birthday??? With his girlfriend there??? Sheeesh...

Nothing wrong with what they did. If they quit u after beating u the first set than you would have an arguement. If they had beat you the 2nd set and quit you you would have an arguement. I never have gotten upset and cried like you when I was down as long as they didn't quit me winners.

You and I have different definitions of "friendly game". I think a friendly game means quit whenever and no hard feelings.

I agree with Easy, friendly is just that, keep it friendly. Guy's birthday, let it go and save the game for another day, be glad you got even.
