'Supplemental' Parallel or Perpendicular Aiming Spots/Lines

I often try to teach newer players to recognize the 1/2-ball hit, so that they are able to gauge how much more, or less, cut might be needed to make a shot (and with practice, this can be used to overlay, and maybe even transition from using Ghost Ball aiming, to using "sight pictures" for contact aiming). In the same "more or less" vein, for target/object balls reasonably close to the cushion, I also use the spot/lines parallel to the cushions, and sometimes the ones perpendicular.

For example, see the shot the Dr Cue's Protege posted about here. As some of the replies mentioned, it's close to the 1/2-ball (30-degree) shot, and can be adjusted from that, BUT it can also be aimed by visualizing the spot/line that would send the ball parallel to the cushion, and then adjusting slightly "sooner" (fuller). The adjustment is simply adding a few degrees *towards* the pocket.

For a cross-side bank, the spot/line perpendicular to the cushion is visualized, and then adjusted for the desired angle towards the pocket.

Does anyone else use these spots/lines to aim balls 'near' the cushion, for (close to) down-the-rail shots, or cross-banks? (I would say both of these would always be thinner-than-1/2-ball shots....)

Wood question for the pros

Hello, Im sure this question has been asked before. I cant seem to find the exact answer so I figured I'd throw it out here. I have finally decided to pull the trigger and I ordered a cue lathe. I know I have a lot to learn and I have pulled a lot of info from this forum alone. I have done a lot of research on this forum and it is full of knowledge. Thanks to all the folks on here that don't mind sharing information and teaching the new guys! So here is my question. Is there a problem with building cues from red or white oak? I have a ton of red and white oak from a farm house renovation i did on a family farm house. The house was built in 1931. So the wood is really old. I have several people in my family that play pool and thought this could be a great gift idea later down the road ( once I learn what Im doing )since the house has been in our family for a while and has a sentimental value. Not to mention I would have a ton of wood to practice on. I assume there is a down side to using oak seeing I never see anyone use it? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Cueist app.. whats your score rating?

I guess there has to be some way to tell the algorithm how difficult the shot is
There actually is a way to tell the algorithm how difficult a shot is - you do it by playing the shot and posting your result.

Let me explain.

Every drill in Cueist has a difficulty rating. Initially, these ratings were calculated using our physics engine. To simplify it a bit, once we set up a shot, the algorithm would ‘play it out’ and calculate what we call the permissible error. Things like: if I hit this shot with a little bit of left English, will it still go, and how much is too much. Factors such as top or bottom spin, left or right English, speed, shot direction and cue elevation all feed into that initial rating.

Those ratings were pretty good - honestly better than I expected - but they weren’t perfect.

To improve this, we added another system on top. Every time a player completes a drill and posts the result, that result is used to adjust the drill’s difficulty.

So if people consistently fail a drill, that’s a strong signal that it was rated too low, and the system will gradually increase it. If a drill turns out to be easier than expected, the opposite happens.

There are a lot of drills in Cueist, so this is still an ongoing process. But players who’ve been with us from the start have already noticed that the ratings are becoming more and more accurate over time.

Cueist app.. whats your score rating?

Good to see you're still able to work on this. Cueist is too good to go stale!
Don’t worry - Cueist isn’t going to go stale. We’re serious about this app and we’ll keep working on it.

Since launch, we’ve mostly focused on making sure everything works a little better, so most of the changes haven’t been very noticeable on the surface. Drill selection has improved, drill ratings have improved, and everything runs a bit smoother and a bit faster.

Now we’re getting ready to add more substantial features, and we already have a lot planned for 2026.

We’re very motivated, largely because of how good the response from players has been so far. Just in the last month, people from around 140 different countries have been training with Cueist. I knew pool was a global sport and expected players from the USA, Europe, the Philippines or Vietnam, but seeing people from places like Vanuatu, Eswatini, Western Sahara or Kiribati is still pretty surprising.

Tougher tables did not help USA pros for 20 years

Why all the complaining about Fargo rated handicap tournaments???? Everybody handicaps Action matches its called getting spotted!! Theres nobody thats every played Pool that hasn't asked for or been asked for a spot, NOBODY!! So get over the Fargo thing and play!
Circling back to this. It's not that I bemoan Fargo tournaments in general. It's that I want more opportunities to play in open tournaments. Open tournaments are more rewarding to me for sure. I understand that they are harder to win and cash in. Could pay deeper to encourage participation? Not that I care, I just want more opportunities for heads up play. There are only 3 open tournaments all year in my city. That is too few. That is all.

Love story about pool, hustlers, serial killers and some action. Who Am I?

I have recentered myself and made some big decisions. Out of caution for my health, I abandoned the og book, written for the pool world. I started another; some of those stories may be some may not. The audience I am aiming for wouldn't know what I was talking about. I know when I was tossed into the pool world I didn't even know it existed. I didn't know about stroke or any terminology. I think that amused my Long Island husband. BUT, I still would like to read road stories etc. I will have a presence here, not a seat. There is a person I will not name that reached out to me. He/she is writing a screen play. I will offer him all the guidance I can. This is a missed opportunity; because a very high level cue maker that saved my life, from suicide said "this isn't a book woman, this is a movie" Be well. Be kind
