"MONK" Warren Costanzo...1979 World Champion

david rhodes was the best player in oregon back in the 70,s. they used to try and run him into me after i cleaned out a town or two.
he could slaughter stuttering rich easily. too bad he died young and didnt get far enough in the pool world.
they were the two that had an entourage of backers for anyone to play. getting beat by him was like getting beat by any top player especially on smaller tables.

i think david howard was the best breaker that ever lived. even better than busti.

65 Critical Safeties for 9-Ball and 10-Ball

FYI — just uploaded a new training video with 65 pool safeties.
It’s basically a full catalog of defensive patterns you’ll see in real 9-ball and 10-ball matches.
Pause, set them up, and see how many you can master — or find the ones that give you the most trouble.
Curious to hear what other AZB members think!

One-piece Cues (circa 2025)

A couple of questions:

1) Is there a shortage in decent one-piece (house) cues--and what are the current "name" manufacturers? I know that Dufferin still has their Commercial and Hi-Run lines, but I've seen Koda "X-cel" cues and Nick Varner cues in a few different locations (bars/restaurants--not distributors), yet both seem to be sold out online. And, I couldn't actually find a distributor online--I emailed from their website, but was told that they were out. [I was also just trying to find a local distributor, and asked if maybe someone might have stock, but was told, "As long as everyone has been out of one piece cues I highly doubt it." (Honestly, the two replies were not very customer-oriented, as I would have still liked to know if there were any local NV sellers.)

2) In the late 90s, when Dufferin seem to be the house brand of choice, I used to see 17 oz cues, and remember a 16 oz one that I used at my "home bar" in particular. It now seems that no one makes anything less than 18 oz--is that the lowest weight now? Also, I don't recall the light ones being shorter than the others, but the 16 was likely 57", compared to 58". [And yes, I know that I could drill out an 18 oz cue, but this is not about making a light cue, but whether they are still available--and anything < 18 oz seems to be a 'shorty'/kids cue.]

Billiard University (BU) playing-ability-exam scores and ratings

this drill was to get perfect 5 on every position. so no, it wasn't in one take 😆 (but I will practice it, til I am able to score 19 out of 20 in the version of BU Exam I (just to hit the ball) and I will post an unedited video, when I manage to do it first time :) (At the moment I am about 15 out of 20).

Has this drill made you a better position player?

It depends on how you define “better position.”
These aren’t natural cue-ball paths. You can play good position simply by understanding rolling paths — you can even play solid pool and good position without having a great stroke, just by rolling balls or playing stop shots.

But drills like this help you develop a great stroke — which, in my definition, means being able to hit the cue ball consistently with the exact amount of english, speed, and draw you intend. That becomes especially valuable on new cloth, when the rails don’t grab as much spin and you need more stroke for precise position play.

It’s a tough drill, mainly because we rarely use these kinds of shots in real games. Still, it can be valuable, since it adds tools to your arsenal. Personally, I enjoy it more as a means to an end — for its own sake — because it shows you how good and consistent your stroke really is.

Basically (and this I also learned from Dr. Dave’s videos), it’s all about hitting exactly the same spot on the cue ball with exactly the same speed as intended — easier said than done.

Anyone Recommend a Mechanic in Louisiana?

Local mechanic backed out, ghosted me. Then the buyer found a 'moving' company that was just two guys in a UHaul who destroyed my wood floor getting it out of the house.

But at least it's gone.

Short story is if you're in Louisiana looking to sell a carom table, good luck; I have no good info to share with you.
