World Straight Pool Championship - Results

Yeah stevie's run was fantastic.... and yeah i am very surprized that there isnt more discussion on it being that he is one of our very own.

I was absolutley floored by the first 3 racks. it seemed like the 1st 2 racks were like a carbon copy of each other.

And just when you think he is done, and faced with a tough situation with a few balls left on the table. He keeps on chugging and fires in a combination with the head ball turning into the break ball.....

Absolutly amazing to watch stevie play when he is in the zone, i consider myself priveledged to say that he is a true friend to me. Just wish i had half of his talent.

Keep it up stevie, cant wait to see you in the finals !

Steve

why aren't feijen, souquet, appleton, van den berg, ecc..., playing in this tournament?

The short answer is many of the Euros did not come because A) the tournament was not sanctioned by the WPA as a World Championship, and B) the proximity of this tournament to two other events overseas.

The round robin part was Monday Tuesday and Wednesday. Each round was a race to 100. Ortman ran 100 yesterday afternoon and again last night. Today is a double elim tourny with the last 24 players. Ortman ran 150 today. So, his last three times at the table his has run 350 balls without a miss.
He is a great player. On one shot today he was playing a shot in the side pocket. He miscued, but still made the ball to keep his run alive. There was some question about whether or not he fouled on that shot. He ref was called over and said no foul.
Max Eberle lost today 150 to something like 126. He has to win to continue into the next round tomorrow.
Tomorrow start the race to 200 single elim for the last 16 players. They get down to four players for Sat.
Archer looked good today defeating Zvi. Zvi from Isreal was the first victum of Ortman's yesterday. Lipsky defeated Gottier today.

Kaznj,

Did you catch the Lipsky-Williams match?

This post reproduced from my post in the main forum.

I'll share some of my impressions of Thursday's play.

Ortmann's 150 and out continued his majestic run of brilliance this week. Thorsten Hohmann, Mika Immonen, Tony Robles, Staefan Cohen, Johnny Fulcher, Charlie Williams, and Johnny Archer also took the easy route to the single elimination stage of the event, not having to facepossible elimination in the evening sessions.

That left sixteen others to do batlte for survivial, and the matches delivered.

Dan Barouty had a huge lead on Allen Hopkins but Allen ran a 109 to come all the way back for the victory.

In a seesaw affair, Mike Davis narrowly beat Steve Lipsky. Steve had rallied impressively but was done in on a scratch on a seven ball about 25 balls from the finish line.

Jim Gottier came from behind with very impressive play to outlast Ralph Eckert.

Zaid Thweib took a big early lead on Max Eberle, but Max came all the way back and the match got to 132-130. Thweib took a big chance on a combo and nailed it, running the rack for 146-130, but his next break shot didn't produce a shot. Moments later, Thweib won the safety battle and the match.

Stevie Moore and Chamberlain had a fine match, and when Chamberlain made an error at about 100-89, Stevie ran 61 and out for the win.

Bob Madenjian and Shawn Wilkie had a nailbiter, and the entire match came down to a safety battle with both players in the 140's. Madenjian won the safety battle and then ran the last eight he needed for a 150-141 win.

Corey Deuel, after losing 150-0 to Archer earlier, beat Waldo easily to advance.

Earl Herring easily disposed of Zion Zvi, 150-44.

So the last sixteen are set. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Bedtime for me.

Copied from my post in the main forum:

I left before the end of the last two matches, but here are my impressions of Friday's play.

In the quarterfinals

1) Tony Robles crushed Stevie Moore, about 200-120.

2) Hohmann ran 141 and destroyed Mike Davis, leading 180-1 at one point.

3) Ortmann's 125 ball run was too much for Earl Herring.

4) Stefan Cohen continued his superb play, beating Zaid Thweib easily.

5) Immonen beat Madenjian in a match I didn't see.

6) Archer beat Deuel in a match I didn't see.

7) Charlie Williams beat Jim Gottier easily.

8) Johnni Fulcher crushed Allen Hopkins.

In the semis:

1) Ortmann cruised against Johnni Fulcher, about 200-50.

2) Immonen made over 140 in his first two innings against Hohmann, and, despite some late mistakes, went on to a very solid victory.

3) Tony Robles ran a 95 against Stefan Cohen just before I left and leads Stefan Cohen about 100-10.

4) Charlie Williams, who ran the first 56, led Archer about 60-20 when I left.

Ortmann will play Immonen in one semifinal and the other match will feature the winners of the two matches still in progress.

That's all for now.
