Challenge matches from Galveston

Touche! Good thread. Good post. See it. Call it.

But thanks to the Taylor Road people for the whole thing. I dammed sure appreciate every minute I that's being available to watch. Some 'minutes' are disappointing but the opportunity is very much appreciated.

I agree they took a big chance, but until the players at the pro level have integrity the chop will always occur.

Thankyou for the hard work it took and hope to see more in the future

I hope these two choppers don't ever need anything from AZ Members. If either of these guys is on a PPV or any other match I sure won't watch it. That was about the worst I ever saw chopping from pros. Thay didn't care who knew or who had what bet on them. Pay back is hell. Johnnyt

Bingo Barber! A chop all the way. And it cost Taylor Road $5,000! Not too cool. That's a good way to lose this event.

This goes in the column of pool players shooting themselves in the foot again. It was pitiful. Johnnyt

I learned something last night... More importantly, I'm sure Taylor Road did as well. I'll lay odds they don't set up another exhibition like this again (and I'm not offering a saver!).

Shouldn't we, as experienced pool afficienados known this was a strong possibility though? There was so much pre-game banter and betting in our AZB action room, but I don't recall anyone mentioning the possibility...

Anyway, THANKS TO TAYLOR ROAD FOR AN AWESOME 1ST RUN SO FAR. WE KNOW YOU'RE TAKING NOTES FOR NEXT YEAR!

If a player puts up his own entry fee like the Ring games at the Derby I dont think a saver or a chop is out of line between the last 2. Its done in poker all the time. But I also believe an honest fight for the belt should be made.
If a promoter puts up all the money its naive to think that players wont make a deal. So Promoters are just going to have to think of creative ways to make Challenge matches work. Maybe having 2 sponsors put up some money for their horse. Players having to represent their sponsors are going to have to excel or lose their patronage.
By the way I believe SVB's refusal to chop the Derby was a little more complex. There was some principles involved that went above and beyond chopping between players.

You don't think a saver or a chop is out of line? Naive!?

Yeah... I suppose it's just clear out of line to think that professional athletes would actually "try" when they dammed well KNOW that other people have their hard earned money bet on them. Too much trouble to care about doing things ethically. Screw it. Just split the bread and split... who gives a sh!t about the suckers. After all this ain't real professional sports.. this is just pool.

You mentality is keeping pool in the back rooms and the money, most of the time, in the 4 figures and dammed near never in the 6 figures.

We should be better people than that.

With the two players involved, I expected the clown show all of you got to see..... Not surprised one bit.

I know they are friends and I knew they would chop, but I expected them to put forth some effort and shoot like they would normally shoot. The sponsors and fans deserved that much.

I had $200 bet on the match and didn't give either of the two people I bet with the option to buy out - why? Because it was still gambling. The only reason you would want to let someone out is because if you thought you had the good side of a bet and now thought you were gambling at best. If you made a bet, stand by your word and let the chips fall where they may.

Plus, I bet on a different streamed event once that looked like a dump or at least a complete lack of care and the person I bet $500 with took my money with no hesitation. So I see no reason to ever call off a bet.

You can compare it to pre seaon football. I would compare it to football or any sport as a whole. Players on both teams are getting paid, win or lose, and Vegas still puts a line out.

If I wrote this entry last night it would have been long & angry. Since I've had a nights sleep between then & now, I'll be brief (somewhat).

1) I lost ALL respect for those two.
2) I am not alone in that opinion.
3) Several thousands of dollars in appearance money isn't sufficient for them to put forth a reasonable effort?
4) I HOPE LIKE HELL that this does not end these nice paydays for the other, level-headed pros.
5) This was the most horrid display of arrogant, self-serving, short-sighted business I've ever seen.

Edit: Sorry, being brief isn't gonna happen. Does anyone remember that near hanging shot Gabe chose to miss that cleared 4-5 balls from his pocket & put the CB right over Frost's pocket with a dead combo sitting in his hole? Does anyone remember how Frost then jarred the hanging combo by shooting it with such force that it cleared the balls from his pocket (including the ones Gabe put there)? That was neat.

One of the problems is the same as always. The players are not caring about the future of the sport only about themselves right now. Me Me ME
Now if Taylor Road doesn't put up anymore challenge matches if they have this next year then what will the players say. Why Not.
Maybe the challenge should be winner take all, I don't know if that would help but it gives someone the chance to make some money if they play hard.
Just my 2

What does everyone expect? Sounds like a good pool players reputation is only worth about 2000. Its a shame when promoters finally step up and give guys what they cry about and then this happens. Next time take the challenge money and just add it to the tourney or implement a banks or 14.1 with the money. At least an amatuer event would make them some money instead of these guys with their hand out because they are such great players. Put Earl and Shane up in a doubles challenge match against clowns like this and see if they split!

I agree Vette. That's one of the many aspects in this underwhelming exhibition we will surely ferrett out. I'm admittedly not experienced enuf to cast a qualified opinion on the players' performance or ethics. Seems to me a lot of shennanigans in pool is acceptable. I personnally find most of these "side deals" pathetic & morally contemptable. But I suspect the deeper I get into pool, the more numb and accepting I will get to some of these practices. :frown::frown::frown:

Anyway, I trust we'll see more regarding the players' end of it. There had been over 1500 hits on that stream within 15 minutes of it starting. Emotion in the chat was high.

Watchez,
While I agree with your assessment about it being gambling it was nothing like preseason football. Everyone on the field is still giving 100% effort while they are playing. The ones that aren't giving 100% get cut quickly.

I offered to cancel my bets when Gabe was up in the 4th game and ultimately tied it up 2-2. I even made the stipulation that if Scott won I'd still pay but if Gabe won I didn't want to get paid, lol.

I'm all for a good coin flip, high card draw, etc....but when you get two champion players playing like APA 5's in front of over 1000 viewers that are expecting good effort and good pool then it is basically a slap in the face to the fans, promotors, sponsors, etc....

You and I bet enough and have seen enough to know that this was going to be a chop but honestly, did you expect them to shoot like that?

No I didn't expect that junk, I had a guy out here text me and say dont worry about our bet that was terrible. I'm gonna pay Uwate and Lenny today cuz I'm not giving out free rolls for other matches. For me personally I'm like Vette, I wanted to cancel so I didnt want to get paid for that, a coin flip would have had better odds. I keep a personal good action list in my head, when a game isn't being played right and guys arent doing any moving in a one hole match that's no ones fault besides the players.

You guys are comparing it to preseason football, I'd compare it to playing poker all in every hand no matter what you are dealt. I didn't lose too much in this thing but I do have sour grapes and am back to only betting with people I can call on the phone, screw a good action list.

Just a concern. Why did the prize money for exhibition between Gabe and Scott was only $4,000.00 instead of $5,000.00 like the other exhibitionist players received? Why did they wait until 9:00 p.m. instead of starting at 7:00 p.m. like the other exhibition games? Why wasn't it a race to 3 like the other exhibitions instead of a race to 6? It seems to me that Gabe and Scott were required to take less money and work twice as hard as the others. In other words, why didn't it start on time at 7:00, prize money be $5,000.00, and a race to 3? Just wondering.

As a viewer, we got what we paid for. And I don't believe the # of viewers that the stream is touting. Go to InsidePool forums sometime and see how many 'members' they have logged in. I would be just as sure that the match last night was a chop that I am that JR Calvert is adding to his viewership on the stream.

And that is why I bet on Scott - with a no safety, no grind one pocket he was the obvious favorite.

I consider Scott and Gabe friends but with the long days of this tournament they were victims of human nature. I am not upset at all at what I watched and will watch these two again.

It is nice that Taylor Productions is putting forth such nice appearance fee money for these exhibitions. But they would have been better off either adding it to the tournament prize pool or putting out a free food buffet each night for all the players.

Or they should have promoted SVB vs the world and had him play a different opponent each night from a different country. SVB doesn't get tired and is a machine.

the races to 3's were tournament matches. The other challenge matches, which were 10-ball, were races to 15. I have no idea why the match was delayed. It was an amateur move by whomever is putting on the streams to keep everyone in the dark as to the match time. Everyone went by the initial posting of 9 Eastern/8 Central and tuned in expecting pool.

I also don't know why the prize money got dropped, but a free $4000 is a free $4000. I know if someone was offering me $2000 for a few hours of work, you can bet your sweet ass that I'm gonna work my ass off for those few hours and maybe they'll ask me to work again.

They'd been playing matches for over 12 hours I believe. Maybe they had time for a dog & a pee, but they'd been pressed all day. Someone there surely knows more of the tight schedule they had.

They were exhausted. That was a factor (or an excuse, depending on who you talk to) in the equation.
