Challenge matches from Galveston

Very very sad to see. This was a very exciting match going in and I turned it off after about 3 games. Might as well stream bucktooths keno game. Pool is awesome.

TAP TAP TAP. i also tried to cancel at 2-2 through pms and on the chat. both people i was betting with said they watched the entire match, but didn't see the chat or the pms, lol. i would not have expected to get paid after my pms if gabe had won, but that's just me. not to mention, the PLAYERS decided to change the format from a race to 5 instead of 6..wtf??? i will probably only bet with a very select few from here on out.

I didnt watch the whole match. Not even close. I was playing 1p on my home table with Rayshooter on AZ.

Even if this was a chop it didnt look like to me that either player was the pre designated winner. Because of that I elected to ride my bet out either way. I gamble because I like the excitement and despite the lackluster play, it was still interesting to me. Gabe runs 7 on that last game to make it a 1 ball game to go double hill. This was not a dump it was a chop that could have gone either way.

I was disappointed in the match because I am afraid it will have lasting effects on future exhibitions. Hopefully the group of players as a whole will get a mulligan.

BTW-- who ended up winning this debacle??????

ok here's my take....

I watched the whole thing.

I saw a bad initial break by Scott and an eight and out by Gabe.

then I saw what looked to me like a friend feeling bad for another friend and him giving him a chance to come back that ended up backfiring.

I saw people that were extremely tired trying to adjust to new conditions, trying things that they would usually have no problems with, that DID look like they were rolling off.

The table was much tighter than they were used to, had either of them played on that table before last night?

I didn't see Gabe warm up on that table at all and it showed with the lag.

With all of that being said, some of the shots they were going for were ridiculous and either showed frustration with the conditions or just a lack of caring.

One thing people have to be aware of is that even the best players don't play the best all of the time. This showed that these two players were human. Many railbirds get it in their heads that top players always play top pool, but that's just not the case.

Did Gabe and Scott play the best they are capable of? Not even close.

What we have to ask ourselves is what were their motivations, were they really trying and the conditions and or mental states of both of them happened to be off, or were they really just not giving a crap?

The answer is that we cant really know their motivations, and I personally, think that since we cant know their motivations, we should in this one instance give them the benefit of the doubt.

ps. Frank, our practice sessions will likely be better than that monstrosity we watched last night. Once I get on my feet again

But you know what? That is what happens when people don't know what they are doing. That is not a knock or an insult to the promoters it is simply the truth. These promoters are getting a PHD in the pool business the hard way and they are paying Ivy League tuition for it. Hopefully it doesn't scare them off. Anyone who can fade this and keep going is someone who could be good for the game.

One of the themes that keeps getting repeated is: that it's a matter of growing pains; you have to walk before you can run; and even before the first ball was hit, people there already looking past this year, to the next.

But this is not the first pool tournament run in the history of mankind. And so much of what is going wrong at this event are self-inflicted wounds that could have been avoided. Now people are talking about future editions of this event, and that would be great. But there are some inherent problems with the way it's being done that will always cripple it if changes aren't made. That is not to take away from the tremendous effort and investment that these guys have made, it is just to say that they did it their way and got pretty predictable results. I hope they can see that and if they choose to give it another go, don't go the Lone Ranger route again.

Most certainly, the issue of their "guaranteed" monies and how that plays (pays :-) out in the next few days will be interesting to see.

I think that is maybe going a little far, they didn't do anything to soil their heritage. These 2 guys made a very poor decision on how to handle prosperity, they didn't rape a horse.

Your right, I edited. I think I just have a slighty bad taste for Gabe. He has made a few questionable calls/moves in the last few years involving live streams. I used to be a big fan of his.

Please edit if you don't mind.

Just wondering. If there are complaints of Gabe and Scott's "unprofessionalism", it can be said the same for whoever put on the Galveston World Classic. Why didn't they get some professional streamers to do the job, someone like BigTruck (or at least get consultation)? Why did they repeat over and over and over the same match yesterday? Their organization of the event sucked sometimes. There were many complaints about that. For example, why did they keep the viewers in the dark so much about what was coming up?

I used to promote country music benefit shows. The very first show you had to be professional. You had to have professional sound technicians for promoting the type of shows we did out of Nashville and Branson. At our VERY FIRST SHOW we ever promoted on our own we used John McBride (Tina McBride's husband) when he was in Wichita at the time and then when he left for Nashville, we obtained the services of another professional sound technician. We also used professional performers from Nashville and Branson.

Believe me, if we had put up some tiny amps in the auditoriums for the performers, and did an unprofessional job at promoting, we would never be able to book them again.

In other words, this tournament brought in the best players in the world -- too bad the promoters didn't have the forsight to use some professionals in the field that knew how to put on a major production such as this.

My point about not knowing what they were doing was in choosing this particular match up. Gabe and Scott grew up together and are very good friends. They have said publicly they wouldn't gamble with each other. This to me is not the makings of an exciting "challenge" match. As was said before you take either one of these guys and put him in against a pinoy and you would have something totally different.

These promoters are not streaming or AV guys. They are organizers and promoters who have hired out almost everything. The person they hired to do the streaming is responsible for the stream. Now you can make a good argument for being responsible for hiring the wrong people but just like Mike said ...you don't know until you really know. They know now.

Oh as long as we are shooting the bull does everyone know the $50,000 for first place amateur 8 ball team event got downgraded to $9,000 for first place? True story. Discuss.

JCIN did they still pay out 10k for first in the 9ball amateur? I saw that Justin Hall snapped it off, beating Shane Manaole in the finals.

Why do you think they extended the one pocket finals all the way til Thursday? My guess they have caught a disease called fundsrlow. Come today, with more $25 a pop admission fees they will have the money together to payout to the winners.

Also - maybe JCIN or someone in Galveston can find out - are the exhibition matches being paid out by check? Is the 'winner' being held accountable for this on their taxes? If not, that is another reason why there could be a chop in these events. Corvette called this work and when I work, I have to pay taxes to Uncle Sam.

Also Corvette, compare this to the blue chip athlete that gets paid $20 an hour to watch the grass grow at some boosters property. You think he is going to say, hold on a minute - I am being overpaid and this is not fair. Again, it is human nature. I admit, if you read my post, the promoters would have been better to put their money elsewhere to try to PROMOTE their event. 1500 real or fake viewers on Ustream doesn't get them much. I do wonder how much Ashley Furniture paid for that banner. It appears they reached out beyond the pool world for funding/advertising.

Thats what is listed here on the CSI site http://cts.playbca.com/TournamentHome.aspx?TournamentID=178011

Ric Jones was hired to run the amateur events and they are posting the pro brackets as well. To my knowledge the first place money listings are accurate and that event is listed as $10,000 for first so I would say yes.

Ashley has a couple of nice displays in the entry way. They are giving/raffling (not sure which I will find out today) away a $15,000 furniture package as well.

The Thursday final has been planned since the event started. I know this because Ric mentioned that they told him to schedule the tournament to finish that day when he first got here. If they are counting on spectator admission to pay anything they are screwed.

the streaming of this event has been a nightmare. first the quality was not up to par. then as that improved somewhat the lack of matches and viewer info took over. that owen frost match was the only thing on all day while the mens 10-started. no brackets for 10-ball posted when i looked but it was to start at 3pm. if it did not why did we not know? just leave us wondering helps you think? they should think of that. i'm just saying they got time to see how many viewers they have and don't want to show matches or explain why they don't. give out a schedule for the viewers to see. don't just make them wait all day for a lame match that causes all this negativity. they should have got a streamer that knows what the viewers like. no get one who streams every 200 days, nice !

oh i forgot ! the new info on downgrading payout sounds like another big thread coming ! geeez !

What's to discuss? Just another BS statement, by a promoter, about GUARANTEED prize money. Nothing new here...we've seen this many times before (by a lot bigger promoters than these guys). IMO, it's complete bullsh*t to advertise that you WILL pay $50K, and not pay even close to that...regardless of the reasons. This is why I said, from the beginning, that the guaranteed money should be ESCROWED in a bank, where potential registered competitors could check up on it. Otherwise, it's 'your word' against 'my word'...and we know how that usually turns out!:(

Check out Ashley next time you need furniture

I just bought a nice Ashely dining room set. From shopping to set-up, they did great. No overselling, no under-delivering. And the pricing was great.

I agree with Oldzilla. There is no respect for the fans with this streaming. I switched over and watched the Accustats game show with Pat Flemming.

We have streaming capabilities and nothing was shown the whole day.

I called a chop match lastnite in the 3rd game. Maybe we should have 10 people put in a hat and pull 2 names out to see who will match up in a challenge match rather than allow 2 guys to premeditate and chop up.

My take on this, after I just watched parts of the review.

I tried to stay awake for this comedy, and luckily I fell asleep. If I were awake, I would probably try to cancel my bets on this match, but I can understand those who would not want that. No problem at all.

As far as I know, these challenge-matches was also on the website to the partner of Galveston World Classic, www.betus.com. This means that the public had a chance to bet on the outcome of this match, not just us who had sidebets here on the forum.

I felt that these two players were spitting in the face of the promotors (Taylor Road) and their businesspartners (www.betus.com) who expected a real one-pocket match between two of the best 1-pocket players in the world, and they acted disrespectful to the 1000+ online-fans, and to those who watched the match at the venue.

If pool-players wants to be treated as professionals, then they sure need to act like professionals. This was just pure stupidity. If I were a pro poolplayer I would be thankful of being asked to do an exhibition like this, and I would force myself to think that maybe 1 of these 1000+ online viewers or 1 of the guys in the arena might be my future sponsors/businesspartners, and play like they already were.

I have lost $ 3,300 on two big challenge matches this year, and paid off without being mad or anything, but the $ 150 I lost on this comic-show actually made me angry. I've paid off the bets, btw, I am not angry on the guys I bet with. I am angry at Gabe and Scott.

I remember Gabe Owen starting a thread here about a year ago, looking for sponsors.

About 1 month ago I was part of the group who sponsored Max Eberle to the World 14-1 Championship. I can promise that I will NEVER do the same to any of these two players, after their performance last night.

I pretty much agree with JohnnyT, I will not buy or support any PPV that these two players happens to be involved in.

I lost all respect that I had for these two.

They should have hired that there TAR company to do the live streams and with the improved quality many would have PAID $$ for it.

Also, Frank, our bet is null and void. I don't feel right collecting on that one!!!

Regardless of how you want to spin it, the participants in the challenge matches are being paid to provide a service. Are you disputing that? I mean, they can't just show up and collect a couple of thousand each. They have to play a challenge match on the tv table. That is work regardless of whether they get a 10-99 or not.

Did they live up to their end of the bargain? Sure, they showed up and played. Would I personally hire them again to do anymore "work" for me. Absolutely not.

I'm quite certain I get overpaid for what I do, but I meet the bottom line every month so apparently someone thinks I do my job well. I wouldn't expect to be retained if I didn't do my job properly.

Maybe they thought they were doing the job adequately, I don't know.

I'm not disputing you comparing it to athletes getting paid appearance money for booster events, etc... But, at those events you'll see the athletes glad handing people, signing autographs, etc...because that is what they are being paid to do. If they go and just sit there I doubt the'll be asked to participate again.
