Louie Roberts Titles?

not many of you remember that Louie won the Den Campbell Invitational at Times Square pool hall in Dallas. Louie called me invited me to the square and gave me the 5,6,7,8 and the break. What sounded like the nuts wasn't,but Louie was very diplomatic and offered me a second chance to get even, but I was temporarily financially embarassed and we never played again.

Sometimes the nuts is not enough, and this was one of those times.

I am interested in buying any of Louie's old cues.

AS an aside I understand Louie is the only person to have broke and run out to 150 in a major straight pool tournament.

And let's not forget than Keith took Louie for $10k in a matchup.

They played five or six times. It was always close, with no clear cut winner between the two. Buddy was the one that tortured Louie over and over again. Louie would get pumped up and go find Buddy (usually in Shreveport). Buddy would give Louie the seven, when no one else could spot Louie anything. And Buddy busted him every time!

Not to discredit Buddy but Self Inflicted Mind Games could have played a big part here. I have seen the better player punish them self by subconsciencly losing to make their inter-self feel better. As many have said, Louie had demons. Maybe Louie wanted to beat Buddy too much and not at all????

He may have, but he's not the only one...

Mike Sigel ran 150 and out against Mike Zuglan, I believe it was in the 1992 US Open 14:1 tourney.

I have the DVD, and it's hard to find a better example of perfect textbook straight pool.

I think he's saying Louie BROKE & RAN 150. How? I'd like to know if he used the kick break where the head ball goes 2 rails (into the kitchen) into the side.

Sigel did that 150 and out off of Zuglans break though. If Louie broke and ran 150...well thats pretty aggressive to call a ball off the break in 14.1

Thanks, I didn't catch that.

If Louie actually called that ball on the break, and hit them hard enough to actually make it, that's the most aggressive play I've ever heard of.

I know Mosconi used to do that in exhibitions, but only when he was playing nobodies. I think he called the corner ball on the back of the rack, and hoped it got kissed in. It does happen sometimes, but not often enough to make it a standard break option.

Kicking the pack and sending the head ball two rails to the side is the most insane straight pool shot ever...

If I am correct Louie broke and ran 150 at the US OPEN straight pool tournament.Again I didn't see it,but it serves to illustrate Louie's agresiveness

Louie loved to give up the nuts and outrun them, the thing is he never broke down. Most people break down when they realize they are up against the best of it.Not ST LOUIE LOUIE,he could be 10 down and still string someracks, still play freewheeling pool.

That is why I played, took the nuts and went broke,I have always liked to give people a chance to outrun the nuts, but in those cases where heart and ability combine to outrun the nuts it is very unpleasant/

Rock Star Status

I met Louie for the first time back in 1977 at Greenway Billiards in Baton Rouge, LA. When he walked through the door everything stopped as he had everyone's full attention without even trying. I've met a lot of pro players over the years but none of them got the "Rock Star" treatment like Louie did. It was amazing.

The ball that can be made is the corner ball. You bank it back up in the corner pocket near where you break from. If you practice this shot a little, you can come close most of the time. I would definitely take five shots at it for the cash.

Dean, Louie shot straighter than anyone I ever saw play pool. Before or since! The way he rifled balls in you just had to see it to believe it. Everything went in the heart of the pocket on a straight line. Now you might think no one could beat someone who played like that. But remember, you still have to play position for the next shot. And sometimes that was a problem for Mr. Roberts.

If Louie could see the ball, he could make it. Two other guys like that were Greg Stevens and Richie Florence, both of whom were better players overall than Louie.

Louie Roberts Meucci (at least one of them) is in the pool hall signed here in Paducah, Kentucky.

Its old, dusty and hanging on the wall on nails....

Can you accomplish this by hitting the 1 ball full?

I'm curious as to how this can be made to happen. I would think you'd have a better chance at calling the 1 in the side, (straight in), or even one of the two balls behind the 1...

5 shots for the money sounds pretty confident, but this sounds like an exhibition type trick shot to me...I'd like to see this shot made.
