I think he means "Calcutta". I know it's something to do with buying players at tournaments but I don't know how it works.
MULLY

hERE GOES--- A CALCUTTA IS A MEANS FOR SOMEONE TO BUT MONEY ON A PLAYER OF THIER CHOICE BY BIDDING ON THEM-- CAN BE A NONE PLAYER, IF HE BIDS AND WINS IT IS A SIDE POT OF MONEY FROM THE TOURNY!!!!IF THE PLAYER WANTS TO HE OR SHE CAN BUY HALF BACK --THUS THEY SPLIT THE MONEY.SOME TIMES THE MONEY IS REAL HIGH. JUST ANOTHER GAMBLE!!! STICK:thumbup::thumbup:

I understand what is is but why can they do it there, and not here. Their in MT, here is AZ.

UGH.. maybe cause it's legal there????

I think it should be legal everywhere. It's no different than playing poker among ourselves (para-mutual) or office polls or whatever.

If a cop comes around a pool room looking to bust-up a calcutta, he has little-man syndrome and is a straight-up azzhole, imo.

fishy subject

Why are they legal say in Montana, and not Arizona???

A Calcuda is a large predator fish related to the Barracuda. Originally discovered in fresh water habitats in California ( thus the prefix, "Cal,") it was introduced into Montana streams to try and eradicate a type of Carp (the primary staple of the Calcuda's diet) that was threatening to decimate the native salmon population during it's
annual migration from the Pacific Ocean to the headwaters of Montana streams to spawn. The Calcuda has been found in some streams and lakes in Arizona where the Montana Carp does not exist but instead the Calcuda attacks the Montana Carp's
closest relative , the AZcarpie. This is a popular pan fish in Arizona and it's population is now threatened. I know that the elimination of the Calcuda is important to the many AZCarpers on this forum.:rotflmao1:

I thought gambling was illegal in every state except Nevada or among native Indians.Poker in your house can be a crime.I definitely disagree with it being illegal but it can be a crime. The police have real crime to stop.I don't think they will mess with a calcutta or a private poker game.

Well

Don't try to interject any common sense into this thread.

Now someone tell me why I like ketchup and tomato sauce but hate tomatoes??

I was gonna explain why the law is different there, than AZ.... But I think I'd rather take a shot at this, since you may understand the answer, a little quicker than the rest of this crew. It seems, when you make tomato sauce, and ketchup, it goes thru a process, that's called cooking. Now cooking takes place in a big vat {or cooking pot} where not only tomato's are put, but various other ingredients that are not at all good for us to eat. then heated to an extremely hot temperature. When tomato's are fresh, and washed off, to get rid of all the pesticides, they are good for you. Most of us don't like to eat things that are good for us, {especially pool players} we like big greasy cheesburgers, with bacon. So, there you have it in a nutshell, why you like one, and not the other. I hope this made very little sense at all. and was of absolutely no help to anyone in search of any truthful answers. Im gonna go hit some banks.

Calcutta's were banned years ago in Arizona because of a bill that was proposed by the Liquor Board.

The rule is that ANY game of CHANCE would be banned. The game of billiards itself is not a game of CHANCE at it requires SKILL to play, but the Calcutta itself requires no SKILL (And no choosing the best horse is not a skill defined by this law). Dice games have been banned as well. Poker is said to be a SKILL Game by these same lawmakers and therefore is allowed, although it falls into a Grey Area.
