Anyone Recommend a Custom Cuemaker

Well I was going to buy a Schon but the deal I thought I was going to get didn't happen so I am looking into a Custom made Cue now.

I am in NYC looking for a good custom player cue that has a nice look (no SP or plane jane looking cues) and with good craftsmanship (maybe a 4 pointer, with or without inlays). If I could have some input on styling/color that is a bonus but not required. One important thing is I want a Predator 314-2 shaft made with the cue instead of a maple shaft and a 5/16 x 14 Piloted pin with Stainless Steel Joint.

So could anyone recommend a Cue maker I could contact who might be able to do what I am looking for? I am not big on who is who in custom cue makers (I know of the top names that sell for top prices but I'm not looking to spend the $$ on those) I'm looking at the $700 range.

I'm not sure who I could suggest for that price range when you want a 314-2 made to match the cue. I'm quite sure someone on here can do much better than me though.

Partials for Pred 314-2 aren't that much. I'd even get the partial myself if I had to and let the cue maker do the ring work to match the cue. I'd prefer to get from a guy who normally does it though. I don't need tons of inlay work or any inlays at all, 4 point Veneers with some nice color to give the cue some look/life is all. The more I could get for my $750 the better but the main 3 things for me are Pred shaft, 5/16x14 piloted pin and Stainless steel joint.

most cue makers i've talked to are going to charge you more than 700 for a cue with points. you might want to give coker or bryan mordt a call. maybe they can work with you on the price.

you might be able to spend more than you think though because most cue makers are going to have you make at least 2 payments to get this done. if you pay half for the deposit and half when it's done it could be easier on your wallet making 2 payments

In your price range Dave Sutton may be a good choice - don't know his prices, but his work looks really good & he's well thought of around here. Also, Lee Pepper - LP Custom Cues, another member here. Puts a real good cue on the ground within your range.
I have two main suggestions...
#1 - Since you are obviously into LD shafts... Have the 5/16-14 piloted joint on your cue's butt done with a black, or black w/ .030 silver ring @ .840 diameter. That way you can use off the shelf LD (or other) shafts by any of the major producers & they'll match up just fine. Black w/ silver ring is what I have done on all of my customs - regardless of price.
#2 - Post this info request in the "Ask The Cuemaker" area. Anybody that can provide for your needs will reply via pm, and you can determine costs, lead time, specs, possible materials to meet your spec requirements, etc. Lots of very good cuemakers right here on AZ (too many to remember right here), and you should give yourself the chance to hear from a sampling of them.

Don't be mislead for a second to believe you can't get a high quality cue in your range. Pointed & veneered imposes some limits, and inlays is really pushing it. Better to have no inlays than to give up quality to get them.

Look thru the Cue Gallery, and For Sale Sections. You can get a idea about what you can get for $700. A cue with one Predator shaft that cost around $200 will leave $500 for the butt. Be prepared to spend a little more.

Here is a example of a cue you are looking for except for the joint

It is in your price range so give him a try.

Mike Johnson (Jensen Cues) makes a good playing cue and he specializes in SS. He is reasonable. Others to consider are Bob Owens (Shurtz) and Jack Madden.

Also post in Ask the Cuemaker. There are many that participate in there and may make you a offer.

Call Dickie Neighbors. Hes been making cues for a long long time. I was just at his shop this weekend and saw a couple 4 point traditional forearms he just made and they look perfect. You can get a lot of cue from Dickie for 700.

I HAVE NOT used this maker, but I know 2 people who have and the cues play very nice. Both have a custom matched 314 and a separate DZ break shaft.

Listen to me and forget the rest of these guys. There is only guy you should go to:

Andy Gilbert 417 743 2759

I’m sure he can come really close to what you want at that price.

Keep in mind, once you buy one of his cues you will be back for more and more!

That Super Billiards Expo looks awesome and it's 2 hours away from me I'd love to go check that out and see all the cues and other stuff there. Gotta see if I can get a buddy to come with me I hate going to things alone.

dick neighbors made my cue for somewhere just north of that range and i picked everything. mine has a lot of detail work - three trim rings, multiple inlays in the points and butt. so it was a little more than 750 but i did get his shafts. the predator shaft alone is going to run up almost 200 bucks. i think i've seen them for 160 or 170. i would tell you to get the cue made with either black collars or black with a stainless trim ring so you could just use any ld shaft you want and it would match. dick posts on here as rhncue. steve lomax is another cue maker that i have pesonal experience with and highly recomend. i don't know what he would charge for all that you're looking for but he posts on here as stevel i think. his cue will cost more but if you want very little detail i would least tell you to ask him. i have no hesitation in recomending either guy. they are both very nice to deal with, fair on pricing, and good on turn around time. dick made my cue in about 16 weeks total from first contact to delivery and steve is going to have my jump cue in about two weeks from order to delivery. obviously an entire custom cue as opposed to a stock jump cue is much different and the wait will be much longer. i just use that example to show he will begin work as quickly as he can. opposed to some cue makers who have a long wait before they can even start you cue, regardless of actual build time. at any rate contact them and see what they can do on time and pricing. i don't think you'd be dissapointed with either gentleman. i believe (but don't quote me) they will both start with a deposit and have you pay the balance on delivery so you may be able to spend a little more than you're original budget.
