High Praise for John Schmidt - Player Review

Thats cool. I may have something else for you if you are interested. $10,000 14.1 only match with a European player. Talk to you in Valley Forge this week.

<-----was sure those size 32's wouldn't fit

How about a nice 2 or three day race to 1500 against

Ortmann, Mika, or Hohmann.

Whatever and whoever it is, if it goes off, I am sure it will be great.

Thanks for stepping up.

He might have read about my comment : Race to 500 against Ortmann or Hohmann...that would be greeeeaaattt stuff !!!!!!

This is our offer and it is the only one we will make.

well, how could anyone say no to that offer?

when mosconi and fats had their TV rivalry match, they let fats be fats. that's what made it fun to watch. a little bit of trash-talk-sharking is part of the game, IMHO. personally, i'd like to see john ride his dirtbike into the pool hall, get off, no BS, start running racks, win the match then ride off. lol....

Then you should put up some money and make that happen.

I posted what we would pay for. It was declined. World keeps spinning.

I am sure if you or anyone else wants to make an offer they will listen.

hi

that was a good offer and i appreciate what your doing.
the ref etc needs to be in place for sure to play him but like i said earlier and i know it seems childish of me. for him to get 1000 show money to play me makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit..

i know nobody wants to watch us play in different rooms.
if hes at expo and accepts the 20 innings game ill play simple as that .

You're right that quibbling over the $1000 appearance money is childish. Danny is probably regurgitating bile at the thought of you making an easy grand just to play him.

The terms of Justin's offer is fair so the both of you should be more flexible...and you might make some "easy money."

Sascha,
Oh, how I would love to see John match up against Oliver Ortmann or Thomas Engert, who are my two favorite European players.

Engert & John matched up in the 2007 World 14.1 Championships,& had an exciting match. Engert mis-played several safties and lost but it was still an entertaining match. My favorite American 14.1 champion vs Oliver or Thomas would be something special that I would really, really enjoy watching.

when I was thinking of European straight pool players, I forgot Thomas Engert, but you are right. He is so smooth at the table. I think the match between Robles and Thomas in the 2006 World Championships demonstrates this. Very fluid rhythm.

Oh yeah, Thomas would be a good pick also.... imagine a race to 500 and both run 400 in 1 inning lol !

I would love to see a 1000 or 1500 point game. It would be great to bring back those old marathon 14.1 matches. Also it's a wonderful opportunity to get a 200+ ball run on film during competition.

i'm not sure of that but when i get to florida and buy another 9' table, i'll entertain grudge matches. no "church-like" atmosphere though or heavy fines. it's going to be good, ol fashioned, pool-hall style pool with beer, noise, motersickles, commentary et... the CD's would fly off the shelves.... oh, and afterward we'd all ride to daytona bike week where for our amusement, the pros would prey on unsuspecting drunken, bikers at the local pool hall. now that would be another great CD....

I had the privilege to spend some time recently with Mark Wilson (instructor from near St. Louis); and was quite surprised to hear what he had to say about John Schmidt (and I was so struck by his impression that I demanded permission to report this to the fanatics here).

Evidently John ran 170-something at Derby City, and was asked to do a player review of the tape with Mark as a co-commentator.

Now, for those that don't know Mark, he is a straight pool fanatic extraordinaire. He has dedicated his life to pool; but his greatest goals and accomplishments have always been single-mindedly focused on straight pool. As he developed his game, he was surrounded with old-school greats like Sailor Stellman (?sp?), Dallas West, Jerry Briesath, Nick Varner, and Steve Mizerak - players who have thousands of 100 ball runs, and were really a threat to run 100 any inning that they stepped to the table (a very select group of players).

Mark reported that he was totally surprised and impressed with John's knowledge of the intricacies of the game, and his super-professional approach to straight pool. The surprise centered around the multitude of insights that John offered into his strategies for maximizing his consistency and safety play, and on his super analytical approach to the game.

Too often, we hear the description of many of the modern 9-ball guns being "all shotmaking" and "no knowledge of strategy" when it comes to the almost lost art of old-school straight pool. According to Mark, John is certainly NOT one of those players (though obviously his shotmaking skills ARE champion caliber). Mark reports that John offered multiple tips and strategies that were simple for all players to follow, incredibly sensible and valuable, and THAT MARK HAD NEVER HEARD BEFORE FROM ANY OF THE WORLD BEATERS LISTED ABOVE. Maybe they knew but wouldn't say, maybe they knew but lacked the ability to describe it, maybe they didn't know....but John does. Extremely high praise considering Mark has been aggressively collecting straight pool tidbits from the greatest players in the world for 34 years.

Mark stated that my number one priority now as a straight pool student (and I AM a fanatic for those that don't know) is TO GET A STRAIGHT POOL LESSON FROM JOHN SCHMIDT. His knowledge and skill at this game far exceeds most; and he offers insights unavailable from any other "instructor" (gee, as I read this I have NO IDEA if he even gives lessons....that could be a problem).

If anyone is ever going to break 526, it seems John is the most likely candidate. It also seems that this player review Accu-Stats DVD is going to be a "must-have" for the members of this select forum (anyone know if it's out???). End of unabashed JS advertisement.

I love watching John play...He is so focused and knows so much. He is also one of the sweetest people i have ever met! He spent alot of time with us at the expo this weekend during the 14.1 challenge at valley forge and he was just amazing. I have met John on a few occasions and he has always been just as sweet. Watching him play in person is such an awesome thing. I would love to just pick his brain about this game for a day!! I am sure i would learn so much!

Danny, Danny, Danny - :D

Steve Matlock handed me my walking papers Saturday night (he said he just got lucky :grin-square: ) - how did you finish that little event? Sorry I didn't get to watch you play much.

Danny, its pretty obvious that John isn't interested in playing, so lets move on to someone else. This isn't coming from his mouth but I talk to him regularly, any interest in playing Darren Appleton in this same format?

Danny

There are lots of pool players I have spoken to in St Louis, Millersburg, and Columbia along with some in Quincy Illinois who encourage you not to cease your attempt to get Mr 400 to the table.

We all want to bet on you. But being the underdog according to Mr 400 we would like to get some small odds on our cash if we can.

Good Luck. :grin-square::grin-square::grin-square:

John, I emailed you a long overdue apology (for the heated thread a long time ago). Add me to the list of folks who are convinced you are the man to bust Mosconi's 526 record. :)

Don

i second that notion of Johnny toppling mosconni's record !!!

i second that notion of Johnny toppling mosconni's record !!!

It is my understanding that Mosconi did it on a 4x8 with 5" pockets (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). I would love to see how many balls John could run on the same setup. Likewise, I would also love to know how many balls Mosconi could have run on a Diamond.

We all understand that Danny and John do not get along. We do not need to continue driving that point into the ground. If you don't get along with someone here, that does not give you the right to hijack every thread about that person and use it as your personal soapbox to go off on that person.

Danny, we all have respect for your game here. But not your tactics in going after John.

This has got stop here and now.
