12th US Open One Pocket Championship - Who should be invited?

One issue.....

Filling the field with 32 players would be like predicting it will be hot next summer in Las Vegas, ESPECIALLY with $10,000.00 ADDED MONEY.
This is a quick list of at least 32 mentionables.

This is a good list you put together Joey.... Unfortunately if the schedule stays the same, The players I have highlighted in RED will most likely be playing in the World 10 Ball Championships in Manila which is currently set for May 9-15 2011....

This is terrible because The team at CSI work so hard to improve pool for everybody.

Here's to this being a great event no matter what though.

US Open One Pocket

Lou, we did it 4 times - twice at Plaza, twice in Louisville.

I agree the event will build as it becomes known as an annual event. That is the plan.

We originally were going to go to 4 on winners and losers side. But if we get over 32 players we have to go to 3 on the loser side. We gave 4 hours for a race to 4 match.

This is all in trying to get it done in a weekend. If we get towards the 48 players, we will have to have the last couple of matches on Monday.

We will not 'chase' a bunch of players down, but we owe them the courtesy of contacting them and giving the top players an opportuinty to play. We will have all of the ground rules up by early January. In the meantime, we thought it would be nice to get the AZ community (and One Pocket.org) a chance to suggest who whould be good matches. One Pocket does not have any real ranking system and this will just help us avoid missing a deserving player.

We will address the 'waiting list' and similar things in early January.

This year we cannot handle more than 8 tables. We also reduced the the 10-Ball field to 96 players (last year filled a 128 field). We think we might be able to address this better in the future. But we gotta start somewhere.

I originally wanted to have a $500 entry - but honestly thought it would stop a lot of mid-speed players from playing.

I appreciate all the comments. As long as constructive, they will be taken to heart.

Also, one last thing. The criteria mentioned are 'subject to change'. That is why I do want the comments.

Neil said: Now, I don't want to come across as being negative, just want to point out a few things. You say you don't have the time or tables for a bigger tournament. Well, frankly, then you don't have the capacity at the moment to put on a U.S. Open event.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Neil - I appreciate your comments. More than half of the previous One Pocket events we did - did not get to the 48 player level.

So - from past history, it is not practical to hope for a larger field - because it might not materialize.

This is the US Open One Pocket. If the demand is there, we can make it grow over the next couple of years.

That date on the WPA calendar is nowhere near official. Notice it is 'white' - whereas the confirmed events are in 'yellow'. Those are possible dates for another Raya Sports event. I have been told that that odds of that occuring are slim - and those dates are very subject to change. (Shame on the WPA for putting up possible dates - it only confuses everyone).

Good list there. Just off the top of my head, there are a few others who came to mind. Nick Vita(he won before) and Billy Palmer(one of a very few that has beat Efren at DCC). Of course there are probably a few that I am missing also.

Those are excellent choices that often get overlooked. Another is John Hager who has been in the finals of the Derby City One Pocket.

Thanks for clearing that up Mark. I really hope for a conflict free schedule next year, for the betterment of everybody.....

Imo, if you're hoping to get as many of the top guns as possible, you might aswell make the entryfee higher than 200 $.

If it's gonna be the 32 that Joey listed, they will play for $400 too.

Mark,
The half of the previous one pocket events you did that did not get the 48 player level, DID YOU ADD $10,000 for those events?

Thanks,

You're probably right.

Nick, I know and he should definitely be on the list. MY bad. Billy Palmer... I've heard nothing but good things about his game.

Put Allen Hopkins on the list IMO. Still playing world class pool everyday!
Sure. He's a great player and what a contributor to pool. MY bad...

Scott Frost
Silver Ochoa
Efren Reyes
Rapheal Martinez
Gabe Owen
Corey Deuel
Jeremy Jones

Yeah, I forgot about Raphael Martinez. Been around a long time, and plays GREAT one pocket.
I am sure i spelled someones name wrong, sorry for that. Thats a good starting list for you though :)

I knew this tournament would capture your interest. Bring some dough and you, me and GingerBread Man will get it on.

Hey JoeyA-
Thanks for all your interest. The first event we did had $5,000 added (limited to 32) - don't remember the 2nd one.

2006 (Louisville) was $10,000 basedon 64 - we got 54 or so at $200 entry. Also did a bank event - in the middle of bank country!

Gulfport Doc was there.

This event will probably fill up - but I don't think it would if 64 and we could not fit in 64 the first year of the return. We have a few 'tricks for next year if this one turns out good.

In fact - I got something that everyone will really like but cannot confirm it for several more months.

Anyway - thanks everyone for your input.

Mark Griffin

Sunny, I would guess that for the "US Open" you could easily fill a 32 man field with well deserving invitees. I know there are table and time constraints, but if there's going to be any "Open" part to the event, you'd almost *have* to go to at least a 48 person field. Even then you'd probably have a waiting list. You are advertising this event well enough in advance that people can plan, so you're going to get a good response, IMO.

Lou Figueroa

Yeah, if I were allowed to play in this tournament I would want as much advanced notice as possible to give.

This kind of reminds me of the old Kalamazoo U.S. open ONe Pocket Championship, just with more added money.

I suggest giving the invitees a FIRM response time requirement and then after that open the door wide open to others on a first come first serve basis, that is (except all AZ Billiards posters should have first dibs on available spots) :D
