I don't necessarily agree with your comment.......

Now maybe you were actually off and your subconsious realized it.

BUT TYPICALLY..........when a players mind is talking $hit in their ears its just that.....$hit.......its not that your not listening its that YOU ARE LISTENING, thus giving the brains mouth opportunity to initiate conversation with you.

I'll get down and if i see a rattle or hear verbal speak in regards to missing or anything short of making the ball I GET UP..........there is not a dam thing wrong with my alignment or stance or anything......my brain is full of bull but if I don't reset my brain will CAUSE ME TO MISS!

This is 100% true

it can happen in the way you described but I find the cause is usually for the reason i described.

This is another reason that we teach to SEE MENTAL PICTURES, DONT THINK IN WORDS..........the brain doesn't speak english or anyother language that well......it doesn't understand words like DONT.

Like you get down and think, " OK I'm going to make the 7 and lay up right there for the 8 but whatever you do DON'T Play it long and get hooked by the 9..........

if you shoot I bet money that you get hooked behind the 9..........WHY? Because your brain has no idea what DON'T means......all it hears is "lay it up right there for the 8 and play it long and hook yourself on the 9!

NO WORDS........PICS ONLY

If you don't SEE what you want and need to SEE........STAND UP AND RESET

and the next time your brains mouth calls while your shooting tell him the Grey One said to have a coke and a smile and to STFU!

Almost every time you hear a "voice" in your head while down on a shot, its because there was something lacking in your pre-shot routines.Could be that you never really committed to the particular shot before getting down on it.

I sent you a PM as well

not too sure how the pms work on this site? or how i read em...or send em

it says PRIVATE MESSAGES in the upper right hand part of your screen

it also shows an UNREAD # and a TOTAL # of private messages you have.

Like on my screen it says

WELCOME GREYGHOST
you last visited: Today at ......
PRIVATE MESSAGES: Unread 0, Total 61

it works like email..........you can click on a users name on one of their posts and it will show a drop down menu that says this

view public profile
send a private message to "X user"
find all posts by "X user"

click on send a private message and it will bring you to the message box where you write the email and the recipient will be automatically input.

You can have a total of 70 stored messages if your not a club member.

There is also another thing........THE USER CONTROL PANEL

top LEFT of your screen it says USER CP

click on that and it takes you to your control panel where you can subscribe to threads, check the reputation you have received from others, edit your entire profile, make lists of friends, edit your tag lines and avatars, personal info, website links ETC...........

Does anyone know if we have a HELP document thats a sticky? If not we should have one addressing stuff like this for everyone to see.

hope that helps,

If the shot doesn't look or feel right or the vocies say your going to miss you need to get up. You're right also. The voices are almost always right. The same voice tells you when your locked in on the shot and you listen to it then, so why not when it says your not locked in? Johnnyt

It's an acquired skill -- you have to learn it. Same skill that makes you get up when the waitress with the big boobs walks by :-)

This is your subconscious mind in operation and it needs to be heeded. Think of it this way. How many times have you been leaving the house and have this nagging thought/sense that you've forgotten something and you dismiss it, only to discover that indeed you had overlooked something? Typically, it is advisable to get up from the shot and regroup.

Amazing...

Why can't we just lock in on ALL shots??? Seems like some of them have fuzzy radar..LOL!!

Called visualization, as I am sure you/ everybody knows.

In racing, it is the practice of looking where you want to go, not where you don't want to go.

Good stuff, GGhost...

Five bucks

Ever play some nit that talks smack while your down on the ball? If you play in bars then you have. Bet you a beer you miss that shot! Let's make it $5 pal. Shuts them up quick. Get up, start over and shoot every shot like a $5 shot. Oh yeah, lots of people watching you play now so show them you certainly can play. That voice does creep up on us all sometimes. Don't listen and do your thing. Again get up and start over.

I have a voice in my head that says "take the duck!"

(It is the voice of my buddy who taught me the game, and continually helps me improve.)

Occasionally, the voice says "combinations (or 'bank-shots', whichever is at hand) are low percentage shots".

Funny part is that now I smile when I hear that voice in my head. It makes me re-evaluate what I am looking at doing, and to decide if the risk/reward in the shot is worth it. And I get to bust my buddies chops when I see him, and tell him to stay the hell out of my head! :p

thats correct sir..........I can say truthfully that when I have played my best pool I did not hear one word from my imaginary parrot

all that happened was I was "watching" a video of myself running out from a 3rd person point of view (looking from above) the video plays just ahead of the speed i'm playing and I swear i get out like Obama on tv with his teleprompter

the overhead view gives me my directioin/angle into the next shot and i make a quick decision based on that direction/angle and choose my speed and spin

when it happens like that i have alot less to think about and every thing just flows really natural......

i don't know....everyone wants to ground and pound the run out.....i prefer to slide in and out of it......you move a little and you slip the jab.....move a little slip the jab..........before you know it even tho it looked like you didn't do much the run out is devastated and so is your opponent....i think there was a game along time ago that they played like that lol

you'll lose sense of all space and time and your cue ball is like water, it just flows through the rack......when you win the game or miss and finally snap out your confused and wonder how you got here because you know what you did but the memory is all fuzzy as if you just woke up..........

maybe you just did lol

to sleep my friends,

I know how pro golfers overcome this, pre-shot and visualization. Pre-shot quiets the voice completely as you get caught up in a task and focus your attention there.

Visualization works in a stronger manner. Forget about when the voice is negative for a moment and think how the voice sounds when you are "on", feeling good, running out. Athletes carry a catalog of situations where they were successful (6 iron small fade held up into a right to left wind on 16 at Augusta for example) and draw up that image from their catalog of successes and review it in their minds (as part of their preshot) and put their mind in a successful positive place before they move into action.

Pro golfers will stand on the range and hit the shots (learned for Nicklaus) that they feel would come up on the course. When they hit one perfect, they will stop for a moment and visualize what they have just done, imprint it, a step of self-hypnosis. Then when the shot comes up under pressure, they pull the memory up and go from there. Guys like Tiger (who completely does it the Nicklaus way) have a better catalog to draw from, for Tiger he can go to a specific instance where he hit the exact shot he is faced with under super pressure with super success and when he standing behind the ball, before he starts his line of sight drill that leads to his pre-shot (just like Jack) he's reviewing a specific time when he had that specific shot and hit it to an inch, which is a stronger visualization than the guy who is pulling a memory from the range.

If you think about when you are on, everything feels right and you approach your shots with positive expectation. When you are off, just the opposite. Pre-shot and visualization are a way of "tricking" your mind into that space of positive expectation, giving yourself that feeling you have after running a few racks (heard about it) when you have just got up out of the chair.

1986 Masters, Jack Nicklaus on 16 with a chance to win the Master from nowhere at age 46. Nicklaus is standing behind the ball, which he has teed up, visualizing his shot, whoever is doing the color says to Tom Weiskopf who is announcing 16, "Tom you've been here before, tell us what's going through Jack's mind right now"

A reverent (witnessing a miracle) Weiskopf's reply," If I knew how that man thought, I would have won this thing".

Thanks

Kevin

In 30 years of playing, I have NEVER made a shot I thought I was going to miss (that's maybe 30,000 times in a row). I mean NEVER!
If I am down on a shot and have ANY thought in my head, I am not ready to play the shot. I am only ready to misplay the shot.
I have even purposely told myself that I am about to miss, that I can't make a ball. Voila, I miss and miss and miss and miss.

Now I lie to myself and use that inner voice to tell myself that I can give Efren the 8 and the break, that this shot is a hanger. Once this confident voice is silent, I fire the ball in.

Simple as triple reverse child psychology!

Yrs ago I think in BD they asked a large group of top players, if there was one thing you would tell someone to improve what would that be, I liked Fattys answer of all and Buddy Hall and many other top pros also responded. Fatty said "Avoid Distractions" there are internal and external ones the internal ones are the worst.
