He plays real good most of the time, but now he is having and out of stroke day, in a big match! What causes this?

The other day I was playing great while warming up, then shot AWFUL in my match, then shot great again immediately afterward. I couldn't figure out what was going on, I couldn't run 5 balls. On my APA team, I had not lost a match in about 4 months, I was not nervous, and I was playing someone I should normally wipe the floor with. Occasionally that just happens, and I'm eager to read other responses to your question.

i immediately start checking my stroke to see if i some how got a glitch in it and go from there and do a process of elimination and try and figure it out :)

Baby on the way..He is not sure if it is his..Rent is due and his stake horse just told him he has one bullet and he feels he may be getting dumped so he will be waiting outside with a bat..That is what keeps good players out of stroke in Houston..My 2 cents..

I could be as simple as not eating and slo as funny as not breathing... Although, you don't have the obvious signs of nervousness, it's the underlying ones that also can affect you negatively. My recommendation, when you mess up and you can figure out why, go back to the basics immediately, slow down and take it one ball at a time but keep thinking of the next few shots as not to lose shape and be worse off.

Again, this is my 2 cents and it works for me but that doesn't mean it will work for someone else... Just Saying.

Hard day at work,
hard day at home,
almost got in a wrech on the way to the pool hall,
that blonde over in the corner,
that guy with all the muscles in the other corner,
no sleep,
somebody mentioned hunger,
too much Mountain Dew or Coffee,
the 'whose baby is it thing was a good one,
just got done shoveling snow off the driveway...

as you can see, the possibilities are endless. Who really knows. If you're not in the game (mentally or physically), you're just not in the game. We've all been there and done that and it's gonna happen again. All you can do is try to play through it and hope you don't lose all you assets (cash/house/car/cue/etc).

I know for myself, if I carry some mental turmoil (work, bills, women, whatever) into my pool playing, I tend to rush the shot. I'm impatient and won't sight the ball properly as I get into my stance. When that happens, I find myself in stance without having aimed, or I'll be stroking and not stopping to aim. For me, aiming before and as I take my stance is critical. Also, stopping dead still to aim while over the ball is critical. If I shortcut those two things, forget it, I might as well go home.

According to the World Games, pool is defined as precision, non-reactive sport. This places a premium on the mental game. 'nuff said!

I agree - anything that causes excess tension off the table, mentally being pre occupied with issues, or interferes with concentration just eats up my game. Alcohol too.

Another thing people don't talk about too much is intimidation. If I'm playing against a name brand accomplished player, my game almost never goes up - if it goes anywhere, it goes down. There's a degree of self-conciousness involved. Sometimes I find myself becoming a spectator to my opponent's good play instead of thinking about my game and trying to drill him.

I assume that all players experience the above to some degree.

Likely some type of stress or distraction in the player's life which may not even be related to pool. The player's mind is not focused on the task at hand.

Other situations may be that the player is playing someone they don't feel is a challenge so they slack off and don't try as hard.

I play better when I know people think I"m not supposed to win.

Very good, Dr9. I like what you said.

I paint cars for a living and just like pool, some days are better then others.
Some days I seem to think better or feel better and just perform better all the way around. My pool game works the same way. I think my bad days are
not as bad as they have been in the past, but are still present. I have found the better I feel physically and mentally the better I perform at either .

My wife

My wife knows a million ways to drive me completely out of my mind, and that about does it for a day or so. At least till she takes some of her magic pills and leaves me alone, then everything settles down..

Quesports, I never thought of this reason before!

Good input though. That is a good reason by all means.

A bad hangover, an outbreak of herpes, sappy love songs playing on the juke box. There are many things that can take a pro out of his game. Eating spoiled crab meat, watching the Saints lose in the last second, the list goes on.
