The other day I was playing great while warming up, then shot AWFUL in my match, then shot great again immediately afterward. I couldn't figure out what was going on, I couldn't run 5 balls. On my APA team, I had not lost a match in about 4 months, I was not nervous, and I was playing someone I should normally wipe the floor with. Occasionally that just happens, and I'm eager to read other responses to your question.

Baby on the way..He is not sure if it is his..Rent is due and his stake horse just told him he has one bullet and he feels he may be getting dumped so he will be waiting outside with a bat..That is what keeps good players out of stroke in Houston..My 2 cents..
I agree - anything that causes excess tension off the table, mentally being pre occupied with issues, or interferes with concentration just eats up my game. Alcohol too.
Another thing people don't talk about too much is intimidation. If I'm playing against a name brand accomplished player, my game almost never goes up - if it goes anywhere, it goes down. There's a degree of self-conciousness involved. Sometimes I find myself becoming a spectator to my opponent's good play instead of thinking about my game and trying to drill him.
I assume that all players experience the above to some degree.

Likely some type of stress or distraction in the player's life which may not even be related to pool. The player's mind is not focused on the task at hand.
Other situations may be that the player is playing someone they don't feel is a challenge so they slack off and don't try as hard.
I play better when I know people think I"m not supposed to win.
According to the World Games, pool is defined as precision, non-reactive sport. This places a premium on the mental game. 'nuff said!
My wife knows a million ways to drive me completely out of my mind, and that about does it for a day or so. At least till she takes some of her magic pills and leaves me alone, then everything settles down..
