Unable to generate much backspin - equipment related?

and in my experience, even the loosest cloth will allow draw if the cue ball is close to the object ball.

In most of my experiences, I would agree with you Bob. However the cloth on my personal table was actually loose enough to give me only a foot maybe two of draw, and I have an up and down the table draw stroke on it after stretching it tight. If he can draw fine at the pool hall but not at home, The only logical thing in my mind is the cloth... maybe even worse than mine was... unless his object balls are very very light weight; like the ones that come with those 4 foot pool/foosball/ping pong kids tables.

A bar near my house replaced a broken 2 ball with a super light plastic ball, and with a straight in draw shot, the cue ball rolls forward a couple feet before coming back 6 inches lol.

Well the OP has a few things to check and get back to us, I'm more than curious now.

Light coat of no-wax pledge.(On cloth and Balls) Sounds like you might have a humidity problem. This is what I do to my table that's in my basement.Works great just don't over do it.John B.

No Draw

If Simonis was installed and stretched properly the first time, then reused because it was still looking and playing great, the restretching will not allow you to properly draw your ball. If its cheap rag cloth it might be restretchable. ''Might''

I made myself a "practice surface". Its a formica folding table, 3' wide, and 9' long. I put a piece of old, worn simonis cloth on it the local room gave me when they recovered their tables. I put it on with clamps. I never got around to stapling it, as I wanted to see if the idea worked at all before I made it more permanent.

I can draw the length of this "surface" with no problems. Yes, the cloth is loose. I'm a C player...

<=== Thinks its the OP's technique...

Holy cow!

I never gave a thought to the cleanliness of the CB. After reading a few responses here, however, I went down to the table the other day and gave the CB a real good cleaning with a clean rag. Just like that, I got good draw.

Now, maybe something magical happened to my stroke the instant I polished up my CB, but it is a night and day difference to me. No big change to the spot I'm hitting the ball, either. If anything, I'm hitting it a bit higher than I've been. Plus, I was able to stop worrying about miscuing, so I'm paying more attention to the shot I'm trying to make, and I've been getting the balls to drop a lot more consistently.

Thanks, guys! Maybe I should have the Stroke of the Gods and draw the ball all the way back on shag carpet, but I'll settle for this huge improvement for now.

The worst CB ever made to put draw english on is the Valley magnetic mud ball, no cleaning or wax will help you draw that cue ball back, and players that have a stoke can draw that CB back as well. Maybe not as far as a real CB like a red circle, but never-the-less...they can still draw it back if needed to get on the next shot, I know...I played with them on all the Valley pool tables in Washington state when the first came out as a replacement to the Valley cats eye magnetic cue ball. The ONLY thing I liked about all the bars using them...is that it left white marks all over the playing surface making the bar owners have to change the cloth more often as it looked so bad:grin:..the next hardest cue ball to draw back is the oversized cue ball the bar tables use to use that couldn't use the Valley magnetic cue balls...you could actually see the cue ball PASS the spot the object ball was sitting at when it came into contact with it...by a few inches before it would reverse direction and take off. Wax that CB and it would pass the object ball by 4-5 inches before backing up:grin:

Looks like there's no cheating the law of conservation of momentum.

probably a+b

do you have old felt? do you have old billiards ball set? try changing the felt and buy a new set of pool balls.

also hitting the cue ball hard won't help you generate backspin, it's about your stroke, a rigid and power stroke is not needed for backspin.

No phone call was received. Offer rescinded.

Opportunity missed there by the OP. Very cool of Mr. Martin to make the offer.

Yikes, someone took to long to make that call.... :boring2:

Wasn't Ray, but I got some free advice from another great player about my game once.....he told me to take a break from pool for 2 weeks........

Well the starting of this thread was the OPs first and apparently last post so I'd guess he wasn't overly concerned about finding help or the answer.

I'm wondering if the OP had any success with the suggestions.

He said he cleaned the cue ball and problem solved... so... I would say stroke issue. I have a 25 year old Valley cue ball I don't use that is so dirty it's sticky to the touch... can still draw it a table length.

If the OP (or others) want some technique advice to help with draw shots, several useful online videos can be found here:

Enjoy,
Dave

Actually, I don't think "TripleM" has checked back in yet.

Try drawing one of your regular balls, see if it works better than your cue ball. If it does, the felt is fine, and the cue is fine, you just need a different cue ball, or learn to use the cue ball with a different stroke or lighter grip on the cue.

Whoops sorry bob, I read sloppypockets' reply on page 2 and thought it was the op.

Well, definitely stroke issues going on with me, but I'm working on it. Another 900,000 balls to hit and I should be able to aim and draw.

Hey, I can draw the ball OK most of the time, I was just surprised how much easier it is with a clean CB. Got to wonder, though, about all these pros getting all anal compulsive about using clean balls these days. Must be something to it besides skid reduction.
