Do you think alcohol helps you play better?

I like to have a couple drinks when I play. Sometimes I think it helps me not over think the shots, and just play loose. but...
Sometimes I think it clouds my judgement and I don't see the patterns as well, or the safeties available to me...I also think I tend to take on a don't care as much attitude.

Playing loose vs playing smart and sharp...truth is I've played extremely well both ways in tourneys, but with NO DRINKS whatsoever, if I get on a roll early, I find that I will loosen up, but if I have my hands full right off the get go, some alcohol seems to help...???

When I was younger I found I had a plateau. After 6 beers I was good as long as I held that buzz. Once I tipped too sober or too many more, my game dropped.

After I quit playing for years. I find now I play way better sober. After a beer or two, my game drops.

Ive often heard pool is a muscle mindset awareness game. Meaning if you learn how to play drunk, you play better in that mindset.

Which kind of makes sense... I learned how to play young (6ish) but learn how to play well in my early 20's while spending alot of time in bars and pool halls.

Now in my 30's, I rarely drink much and focus more on my game so since I am relearning how to play and I am much more serious about it now, I play better sober. ;)

Alcohol makes me taller, better looking, smarter, richer, and very, very irresistible to the ladies. If I wasn't already incredible in the sack it would make me great at that too.

Oh, it also improves my pool game.

I tried drinking, but I was always too busy on the bar table that I rarely went on the pool table anymore. It was either drinking or playing pool.. so I chose playing..

Haha I love it very true. ;)

During a my match I will drink a max of 2; after that I'm a lost cause. I've actually developed my own game day routine. So far so good:-)

I am not going to tell you what I think, I'm going to tell you what I KNOW: My skill level went upwards when I stopped drinking before/during my matches.

I don't drink now until my night's match is over.

I have a friend who is a chronic alcoholic pool player. He needs three drinks to feel normal then starts shooting lights out at about five drinks.

He is a world beater until he gets to about twelve drinks at which time he goes back down hill. Using alcohol to relax can be a slippery slope my friends.

Some years ago, I used to play inna doubles/partner format every sat. night at a local bar. My partner cuddn't hit S**t until he got to drinking,(he was native american), and I hit well, but as I started drinking, i'd loosen up a little too much and start to miss. It wasn't anything official, just a night away from everyone's cares, so we all wound up drunk by the end of the night. We ususally did pretty well. Everyone kept trying to get me drunk!

I shoot lights out after six beers.
Problem is, I end up playing on someone else's table.

Sent from my...never mind.

Absolutely not. There is no benefit to drinking alcohol.
Having said that, however, I did read an article in the National Inquirer, written by an employee at the Jack Daniels distillery, that drinking large amounts of alcohol can improve one's social skills. Like dancing, and joke telling.

i do not know

if booze helps my game, because i have never played sober, so i have nothing to compare it to.

I think it depends on the person. Some can hold their booze better than others. For me it was what level the guy I was playing was. If we were about even or I had the nuts I could drink beers slowly all night while playing him. If you're talking about top players playing top players drinking, not many can drink and hit their top grear after a few beers. Johnnyt

I know 2 great players that could flat out swing it while drinking plenty, Pittsburgh Mike Katsaris, he was good until some where around 30 beers and 10 shots of wiskey and then 1 of the greatest players of all time could really drink his share and still swing it, not going to mention his name, but you all know who he is!
