Frost vs Alex - 1 Pocket Match on Monday for $40,000

The simplest reason I like Scott Frost in the match;

SVB and Alex played essentially dead even over three days. Shane will gamble at any game he thinks he can win. Shane will not play Scott (at least I have seen him refuse - do not know about at this exact moment). So my expert opinion and what I believe to be the opinion of the best player in the U.S. is Scott is the favorite.

Sorry if i misunderstood your post but why would we need and clarification from the rail about this game being on the square.

I think you may have misunderstood my post. I showed your post to Keith, and he, standing next to me, replied this:

"Alex is firing at the money. Scott has got the right people behind him. Alex, as you know, is subject to beat anybody. The one thing good about this game, Scott plays real good when he's playing guys that he's spotting a lot of balls to, so his game will showcase where it looks like it's a lot stronger.

"I believe if Alex can stop Scott from freewheeling, he can easily win this money. I haven't heard lately of Scott beating anybody that can really play. Yes, when he's spotting people 11 to 7, 12 to 7, in that area, Scott is going to look real good. Alex has just got to stop Scott from getting behind the balls. If Scott gets behind the balls, he's going to be dangerous. I have played them both, and Scott does have that edge there in one pocket once he gets behind the balls. So Alex must contain him, and the game will be on. I am looking forward to hearing the outcome.

"As you know, Scott hasn't faired well in the one pocket tournaments lately, but he could show up here for this kind of money. I think Scott does bank a little bit better than Alex. On those tables, you have to be able to twist balls real good, and I think Scott has the edge there.

"As far as on the square, you always have to think the worst and hope for the best. These are two gunfighters, one guy taking a shot at the big money. I know if Alex wins, he might win 60 to 100, because I'm sure that it wont' be over with if Alex wins the first set. There will be another appointment. You can bet on that.

As far as 8-ahead goes, everybody thinks it's going to take 16 hours, it might not take 10. They both play pretty fast, not real slow. I've had 8-ahead sets that I have played that last 2 hours or less, and I expect this match not to go 16 hours, as I was reading about. Over and under, 16-1/2 hours, I take the under."

Does this help clarify, sydbarret?

8 pm California time is my bedtime in Missouri but it will still be going Tuesday afternoon if it is 8 ahead.

I like Alex over Frost in every game except one pocket but I would not bet against him.

I don't think so. I heard on the Swanee stream last night that any session is capped at 10 hours. So that's 8 pm PST to 6 am PST. I wonder how many of us will be sleeping on the job Tuesday...

And as Mikey asked - I'm also wondering - who's putting up the cheese?

Whoever is putting up the cheese, would that enter into which side you would take? I'm not sure I follow.

I'd hazard a guess that both players are getting staked for this kind of dough, but I may be wrong.

I beleive Shane beat Scott getting a ball and broke even playing even. I think this match is a coin flip and really, just depends on which Alex shows up. That's the biggest gamble. Alex's best game beats Scott's best game IMO. But who knows when Alex has his head right.

The blue stuff should have a ticket price, to read.

Don't you dare think Keith doesn't know every nook 'n' cranny of the game,

one-pocket

Well its on, Alex has taken the challenge for $20,000 a man, its even 8 ahead one pocket. You will be able to watch it live on www.povpool.com . The match is taking place at 8pm at Hard Times in Bellflower California.

IS THAT 8PM-EST????????:confused:IF NOT IT WILL BE 11HERE IN GA !!!!

This is exactly what I was thinking. Alex as an underdog is pretty crazy to me in this game. SUPER tight pockets added into the equation would make Alex a slight favorite in my mind, but like you said, it would favor that certain Alex that we all love to watch...

PLUS, Alex has to be one of the best grinders of all time! In a long set I would think it goes something like SVB, Alex, Dennis or Busty?

Either way I'm happy to watch this one!!!

Scott played a game recently and won and didn't give up a HUGE spot. It was a spot but it wouldn't have mattered. I think the other player got 3 balls total in 5 games.

On the stream last night either Jay or Billy said this is "the first time in 3 years Scott didn't have to give up weight".
That's gonna be a factor. Like my daddy says you aint gotta be scared to get your ass whooped. I just think Alex has been playing stronger competition that should help him here.
I agree 100%! either way, gonnna be some damn fine playing and best of play to both guys.
absolutely. Have fun with the forum sparring don't let it get you frustrated. At a minimum it feels good to think harder about your positions and being able to defend them is a good thing.

Jam of course it matters who has put the money up. Its also good you got a line the game is on the square. Two ways of trying to figure out the same thing. Wasn't accusing anyones character by any means.

I'd love to know how everyone determined the favorite in this.

Who's been in more action with great players lately?

Who shoots better?

Who banks better?

Who runs the balls better?

Who kicks better?

Who moves better?

Who's more likely to sell out?

They both bet high all the time, bet is high enough they'll both try hard, I don't think either is going to dog it.

Walk through those questions.

One thing you forgot.

How has Bonus Ball practice affected Scott's 1p game. :)

If I was betting on horses, reading the Daily Racing Form, I can read the horse's recent outings. It would be interesting to read the stats of each player in recent times. In pool, there is not much available, as some matches/tournaments don't get documented. :frown:

When I am at the track, I like to look at the horses to see what they look like on the track. In this case, if I was on site at the venue, I would try to observe each player's demeanor, e.g., did they get sleep, are they eating well, who are they hanging out with, are they drinking alcohol in excess, et cetera. These are the things that would affect how I would bet, if I was to bet on a pool match. This doesn't just apply to these two players; it would apply to any two players. ;)

Being on site has its advantages, just like being at the horse track. With no Daily Pool Forum, it's anybody's guess who will come out on top, but being on site would sure give one a little edge when it comes to making a wager.

I hate to sound like a turd in a punch bowl but IMO you guys are asking for big trouble staging an event like this live on the internet with the venue California. We're talking about real money here and I seriously doubt if the pinheads in charge of this state will allow this to go down peacefully if they get wind of it. I'm not an attorney but I have a sneaky feeling this is illegal behavior in the golden state. And god help anyone if the feds get involved (IRS). The degenerate government gambling establishment hates competition.

Just saying............

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Once I was gettig my brains beat out for $10 a game, when someone came up to challenge the table, my oponent informed him that we were playing for $10. To this the pool hall lawyer responded "Don't tell me that! You could get this place in a lot of trouble!" So I stepped in and said "It's like this. We are playing a pool tournament. It is a $10 entry and there are only two of us entered. It is single game winner take all. When we finish this tournament we will start another. Do you want to enter?"

I kind of doubt any money will be visible, so whether anybody is gambling or not, it's hearsay on this forum.

I'm not saying anything negative about how Alex plays, he could win, but based on seeing Scott play, Alex is the underdog...maybe not by a ton, but he is. Since when does tournament play make a player? Have you ever seen Scott gamble? I have...and it's scary. Scott is by far a better gambler than tournament player. Alex, clearly, is an excellent tournament player, gambler...I don't know. Guess what..If Alex does beat Scott, kudos to Alex. I'm merely stating my opinion based on what I know and have seen.

I don't want you to feel I'm picking on you...I enjoy discussion forums.

Alex, I feel, is a better money player than a tournament player.
If I had to find a world champion who has bet more of his OWN money...
...I can come up with Jose Parica, Grady Matthews, Billy Incardone...

However, I think Scott knows more about 1-pocket...but Alex is a sharp cookie...
he will learn Scott's moves while holding his own with his alround game
and superior stroke...I like his stroke the best since Buddy Hall.

Win or lose, Alex will be a better 1-hole player at the end of this session.
Alex has won tournaments at 1-pocket, 9-ball, 10-ball, 8-ball, and snooker
...and he's ran a lot of 100's at straight pool....he will understand and learn
anything Scott does to him.

Scott does little things in one pocket that are so strong that a great player doesn't even realize it until they are playing against him. It can be difficult to pick up from off the rail.

Does he shoot as straight as Alex? Hell no.

Can he still get all the balls he needs to win? Yes.

If Scott is in the right frame of mind, I think he could win this in 8 hours. Most of the times I've watched him gamble, he is a stone cold killer.
