In regards to Mike and Zion....

No offense but what exactly are they retiring from?

How many points events have they won? Where are they on the money list?

Just because someone stops paying entries to events doesnt really constitute a retirement to me. They are just not going to play for awhile. But that doesnt sound as dramatic.

I understand where they are coming from though.

Don't worry about the pool "brain drain" that seems to be happening. There are a ton of unknowns that will "suddenly" pop up out of nowhere. There will always be up and coming players to take the "open spots."

Let's see, within the past six years alone there was SVB from the Midwest, Dechaine from New England, Shaw from across the Atlantic and Biado from the PI.

Who's next?

I predict it will be a "Southpaw" from the Southwest who comes out and takes the pool world by surprise. Let's give this player a nickname NOW. Let's all him "The Answer."

What's the question you ask? Keep your eyes open folks and you'll soon see.........

The biggest Bonus Ball supporter/touter retiring on the eve of BB's resurgence with Barry Hearn's involvement? Just doesn't make sense!

I don't quite understand your post. While neither are at the very top of the pool food chain Mike did play on the Mosconi Cup Team and placed second at the Worlds 14.1 a few years ago and Zion is the best player from Israel and placed second at Turning Stone. Having said that they both dedicated most of their life to pool and will be missed...at least by me!

Agree with you totally- well said!

I dunno where they will come from, but they will keep coming. Somewhere in this rubble we call POOL, there is the answer. I hope recent losses are temporary and just frustration or growing pains.

Wishing all of them the best of luck.

Still, in the grand scheme of things, event fields will be just as tough.

We're not seeing the guys who are the biggest threat to win titles leaving pool quite yet.

So what if they played pool. Try quitting your job and play pool for a living. They will miss you at work.

"..but as for a living it's nearly impossible unless I was a world champion 10-ball player with no life or family... It's a terrible shame that pro Billiards never got big enough to motivate me to be a top rotation player, "wich I know I could of been" just not enough gold at the end of the rainbow for me." - Scott Frost

Blaming the sport for not being as good as you can be is a sorry ass excuse.

I guess games in the hundreds of thousands of dollars makes it nearly impossible to make a living in pool

Sad to see them go but,,,,,,,

They're retiring from all the B.S involved in the game and the reality that it can not provide a decent living,,,,,

Same thing as what Danny Basavich finally realized,,,,,

And on top of that,,,all of them represented the game in a totally professional manner,

Alan,,,,,,

All I know is that I just played in a little weekly tournament full of killers tonight, including Mike Davis and Brandon Shuff! Retired Mike knocked me out! But that's ok, we've missed them on the east coast during their Bonus Ball diversion.

MAYBE ten guys can have any kind of life playing tournament pool. Its been that way for a long time. If you are not at the very top its a brutal life if you rely on it solely for your income.

I respect anyone who takes a shot at doing what they want for a living. I don't feel sorry or bad for them when they decide to go another direction. Most people do it at one point or another in their lives. Some people do it several times.

Nothing wrong with cutting bait when you are tired of whatever you are doing. Mike and Zion both represent the game well. They will still play when they want and I would assume continue to represent it well.

I wish

I gotta tell you. These pros that have stepped down, it's sad.... And it's not there fault, I'm sure there is nothing they would want more but continue to compete in a sport they are great at. And they all are great. It's about making a living to put food on the table and shelter..... Lets not even try to knock these guys, lets get together and thank them for sticking it out as long as they could. The pros are not the ones to point fingers at, they are a positive thing in pool. Blame the dark side of pool halls and hustling that have kept the younger generation from entering a pool hall..........

The next time your in a pool hall and you see someone who appears new to the sport instead of being a hustling thug.... Embrace them and teach them the beauty of the game, get your respect by sharing your knowledge with them. Be positive and don't try to take them for the only $20 they have.....
This is why the sport has declined, because of the selfish hustling ... Makes me sad

Thank you all pros.

I'm worried now ill be facing some of them in an amateur tournament .. Lol

Offense taken,

That is a pretty cold statement about two good guys who have given more to pool and achieved more in pool than you ever will

Give the cutting edge a break... It gets old

I am a tad sad I missed it. Iwas right nearby- group bike ride that finished at ~7:45, so I coulda made it- though I was a pretty wet and stinky individual at 8.

Tell the fellers I am getting mentally prepared for nothing.

nope, just being a great player unlike big tv sports doesnt make you a living.
you have to be a business man as well. run a poolroom properly, have tournaments, give high quality lessons, endorse products and use them, be liked and honest, etc. gives you a chance to make more than a living at pool.

Looks to me like Mike Davis still has a little lightning in the jug. He just win the Ginky Memorial, defeating Dennis Hatch in the finals in an extended race to 15. Dennis was in the hot seat.
