Interesting thread. I've not been following the John French saga, only to notice that whenever somebody steps up to the plate to do something in pool, they are scrutinized to the nth degree.
After reading this thread, I am reminded of Mark Trainer who during the IPT era. He approached many IPT players and offered them a sponsorship "deal."
Here is my post about Mark Trainer, highlighted in blue, from 2006. He definitely reminds me of John French.
Mark Trainer is a player from days gone by. He also used to own Pool Sharks here in Vegas, but sold it. Apparently, he's made some very wise investments in real estate. Rumor has it that he bought a piece of property worth 600,000-plus and sold it for 18 million.
Keith too was approached by Mark Trainer, and they spoke over the phone several weeks ago for 3 to 4 days mulling over Mark's player contract, with Mark being the agent. Like Alex Pagulayan, there were some features of the contract that was presented to Keith that were not desirable for Keith. However, after speaking with several of the players, each player was given a different contract as far as the signing bonus, monthly salary, the percentage cut of winnings, et cetera. After having Keith's lawyer look at Keith's contract and after several days of negotiations, Keith decided that at this time, Keith would like to be independent.
Now, having said that, Mark does present some great ideas and has a vision of acquiring big-name sponsors. With a block of players, he can market not only pool, but the players themselves, hoping to make them a household name down the road when and if the IPT becomes a sport in American eyes. Overseas, though, pool in some circles is quite popular. I can only imagine that the IPT in Europe, for example, may grow due to the television exposure.
The contract is a good deal for some players who have no means of income to travel to these events. It guarantees them a monthly salary, making their life a whole lot easier. Money worries can be a big detriment on the tournament trail, and with an actual income, this removes the financial hurdle of attending events.
I think there is a website called Athletes First which Mark Trainer is the agent for. This company has signed up many name-brand baseball and football pros. I can't remember the link, and I'd look for it,
Of course, Mark Trainer is hoping to make a profit on this huge endeavor by signing up pool players. Some of the players who have signed on are not only IPT members, but qualifier players as well. This truly is a golden opportunity for some, and for others, the contract isn't desirable at this juncture. In reality, Mark is expending six-figures up front to pursue this great endeavor, and if it works, then the players who did sign on will receive additional income from prospective sponsors. I do hope it is a win-win for the players and Mark Trainer. Anything that can help promote pool, I'm all for it.

I don't care if this match happens at this point. No one can disagree that this whole situation looks bad on many fronts. Only a fool would spend a penny on this nonsense.
If I was Shane, I would wash my hands of this whole thing. It does nothing for him to be associated with this so called historical match.
Nobody will spend a dime to watch this. Just go back to your home room, tell Dennis he gets 7/5 on his money, and come get it. Forget all the circus crap.

tainted beyond repair, about 5 minutes after anyone ever heard of the guy.
What's freaking me out is the claim there's signed legally binding contracts
between a player and his backer. Is that pool in 2016?
I mean, I'm not even sure the arrangement is legal, regardless of changing the wording from
"Two guys gambling" to "two man invitational tourney".
Can anyone seriously imagine dennis taking french to court or vice versa?

to get my drinks during the match, and I paid up front for them and he never reimbursed...
the hotel he put me up in was dirty... also the other guy quit early and prorated but I didn't
get a cut of that, and we was supposed to play no jump cues but the match wouldn't come off
unless I agreed and the guy jumped in early 1-10 combos like three times"

This is actually a good point. More specifically, French was so over the top with his thinking that Dennis was Superman without a cape, that I still think that when he saw that little Robo-man lost to Shane yet again at the DCC, it got him scared a bit.

Rest assured, if I'd purchased the match, I'd feel entitled to an explanation, but as one of those who did not, this is the equivalent of a supermarket removing an obsolete product from the shelves.
What I would like to know if UpStateAl and those assisting with the stream were aware that the Dennis & Ko match was just an exhibition and was not being played for the amount stated. If so, shame on them.
And no, I don't let them off the hook by saying that they were just there to do the stream. Al was going way overboard with kissing up to French, about him backing pool being so great. Well guess what? If you have to lie to the very pool fans that are watching your stream, this isn't the type of support that pool needs!
