Bob Frey's Side Of the Story

Last weekend a thread was posted by a member regarding his experience with Bob doing work on his cue. The Op was banned & the thread disappeared.

Before it did disappear I stated that both sides of the story needed to be heard & that I would call Bob on this. I just got off the phone with him & with his permission I bring you his side of this.

Bob stated that he gave a quote over the phone for the work the OP wanted done. He said when he received the cue & started to cut a channel for the wrap he discovered a linen wrap under some sort of wood filler that had been used to make it wrap less. That when he took off that linen he found another linen wrap under that. That the cue had been worked on by several people previously. The Op was contacted and told it would have to be linen as Bob was afraid to take it down any further. The other work he requested was done which included a pair of shafts & was sent to the OP. For this Bob received $500.

The Op complained about the shafts and was asked to return the first pair and another set would be made. 2nd set of shafts was made and sent right. Op complained again and was asked to return 2nd set of shafts & a third set would be made. This occurred right around the time Bob went in for surgery. Op threatens he wants shafts immediately or will go on AZB & blow Bob up. Bob was fresh from surgery & tells OP his shafts will be first work done when Bob can work again. Op comes here & blows Bob up.

Bob was very upset hearing of this situation questioning his reputation. He reiterated he doesn't do the internet but understands how 1 person can do what happened here & ruin a rep earned over the course of a career.

Bob stated he was soon to send the 3rd set of shafts to the Op, that he'd done overall about $1500 worth of work for $500 in an attempt to please the Op but that it seemed nothing would please him & hopes this 3rd set he will send shortly will satisfy the situation.

As I stated in the pulled thread, there's always 2 sides to a story & what was put in that thread went against everything I know about Bob Frey which is why I went to him & with his permission & blessing bring his side of it to you here.

We hear so many horror stories about cue makers so perhaps it's easy to come to a snap judgement before all the facts are in. I think what I describe here validates my faith in my friend & cue maker Bob Frey considering the lengths he's gone to in this matter to honor his original quote. Thank you for reading.

Some people can never be pleased.

Bob should stop now trying to please this guy!

We all know he is a super good and honest man and none of this will have any effect on him.

The OP is out of touch with reality.

Tell Bob to forget about this stuff.
 
Yea glad this is all cleared up. Don't need some nit ragging good peoples names through the mud. Should be a lifetime ban for shit like that imop. It's the worst of the worst imop

Everything I have heard of Mr. Bob Frey's work has been very, very positive, with customers absolutely delighted with his work. In all my years the only comments I have ever heard are POSITIVE.

On a more important note, anyone know how Bob fared with his shoulder surgery?
The staples should be removed by now and swelling reduced greatly so physical therapy awaits.

Bob.....if you read this, contact me if you have any questions about your recovery......everyone is different.
However, after having 5 rotator cuff surgical repairs since '09 (4 were my to r. shoulder) I know a little.

He told me he is physical therapy twice a week stage now.
 
I just got home from my Oncologist, driving 1.5 hrs in morning rush hour traffic.
I get myself a cold drink, sit down, open this thread, and realize it's a damn nice
Day after all.
So glad to hear the truth, but then ...... we already knew the truth.

Keep up the Great Work, Mr. Frey (we're the same age and still going).

So do I. In the original thread that was pulled I posted pics of a Frey I had been chasing for 2 years & finally got my hands on. I took it to Bob for a refinish, new leather wrap & 2 new 31" shafts. I picked it up from his shop right after he had surgery & Bob told me I was the last work he'd done before going under the knife. The work was perfect & I'm a picky SOB.
 
Thanks Guys! I didn't want to post as it may seem a bit bias. The initial piece of ivory sent for the butt cap was too short. We contacted Cue Components to get another piece that was , 1/8" longer. The original Schon buttcap was a bit longer. Bob could have used that peice but went above and beyond to get another piece that matched the exact length of the original. I finally talked to Bob today to explain what had happened on AZB but several folks had already contacted him. We have not spoken to Kevin Smith yet, but we will offer to make another two shafts for him with ivory ferrules. Bob does not have the butt so the shafts may not be blended exactly to match at the joint. Know the "smitty" guy, he will once again complain and has already threatened to pursue a small claims against Bob, and report to BBB. He is asking for ~$480 back of the $500 he sent to Bob. So $20 to replace buttcap,joint, 6 shafts with ivory ferrules and refinish. He claims that he sent to Schon cue who had to put another $600 or so to fix the cue.

We thank you for all the support as Bob is recovering from his shoulder surgery. He should be back up and running soon.

i am friends with Bob and a customer. He has been through enough with this guy! Set up a go fund me and I will send the dude some money to leave Bob alone! 10 people chip in 10, 20, 30 or 40 each and he is paid to just go away!

Problem solved!

Put me down as a contributor and tell Bob to get well soon and forget about this guy and his drama! More then enough people are upset about this and would like to see his honor restored and the matter resolved.

What was the supposed "problem" with the shafts?

Just curious. I'm guessing not a damn thing, after the physcotic ramblings in the original thread.

I hope Bob recovers. There is some serious physical therapy after that surgery.

so how does this work exactly? some dude blasts bob frey, gets banned, then the op on this thread who is not bob frey but evidently speaks for bob frey says was not bob frey's fault and his word is now the gospel? meanwhile op is banned and bob frey never responded in the first place?

In my years on az I have often marveled at the uncanny ability the members here have for getting to the truth.

There is no reason I can think of after hearing both sides of this story to feel az members have got this wrong.

I agree. I don't think we have heard enough to know exactly who is how much at fault, although it sounds to me like the probably both didn't handle their end as well as they should have (but again I don't know that for sure and don't think any of us know much of anything for sure without more information as there has actually been very little info that has come out--like we haven't heard from either side what the problems with the shafts was supposed to be much less heard both sides of the story on it).

Also, if you aren't trying to be biased, it probably isn't fair that one side was banned and not allowed to tell his side of the story but the other side is allowed to tell theirs. If the other thread was deleted this one probably should be too.
