i wired the $$ to Riley today for a 12' snooker table, I went the whole way and ordered the TV table not the practice table. It will be here sooner than I expected, but I'm not ready for the fitters to come install it and since the climate is dry in Vegas its a good idea to let the table acclimate to the conditions, i'm going to have them come over and install the table after the World Championships, probably in May. The weather is nice in Vegas then, i'll be ready, the table will be acclimated to the climate. man I cant wait, I have had a 9' table in my houses i have lived in most of the time since 89 and considered myself lucky. I never thought I would get a snooker table and now its gonna happen, as much as I dont like Vegas this will keep me there more, for sure. I'm beyond excited.

I didnt know about snooker until I was 18, and the first time I saw a big table I knew that was for me, I dreamed of going to the UK to play but couldnt afford to go, I awalys considered myself a snooker player at heart, but these days there are few snooker tables left here and the ones that are are golf tables(I dont like golf). This is gonna be great, I made sure everything is perfect, the table, fitters, lights, room, furnature etc will be perfect and stay perfect. Someday I hope to have a break of 80, 53 or 56 is my best and that was years ago-i'm a better player now. I have watched alot of snooker and I firmly believe i can get to 80 someday, a century might be too hard for me, but i'm gonna give it my best effort. no matter what its gonna be fun, regular pool is fun for action but dosent hold my attention like snooker, i can just play snooker for fun and have more fun. for me its 2 different worlds.

Good to hear you chose the REAL snooker table, I doubt there are many if any in USA.

The difference is huge, the REAL table (with tight pockets and the right kind of cut with'em) plays so much more difficult.

Maybe you can invite John Schmidt to play there, I'd bet the centuries (100+ breaks) wont be there and the total clearance will be just a distant dream..
;) ;) ;)

no marvel dont you remember john said running 70 balls was like a century at snooker im sure they will be making back to backs centuries and possibly even maximums after a few weeks practise

lol

This guy never ceases to amaze me. We talked at length last night and he never said a word about a snooker table. Maybe he knows I'm too short to see over the rails anyway. :)

I will be glad to teach him the finer points of Pay Ball though. :D

P.S. Federer lost!

Fatboy, I think thats awesome. I would love to have a Snooker table but you have to have the space. I have a 9ft table right now but there is no way I can fit a 12ft table in. What kind of cloth are you putting on it? Nap right? Also make sure you get an iron too. I missed my last year of school in England because I got a job in the mornings brushing, Ironing and napping tables at the local snooker room for free table time. The snooker table will be great for your pool game I think. Some may disagree with that but it helps me whenever I play.

Nice!!

Fatboy,

You will have a lot of new best friends once you get that table set up. It's been over thirty years since I played on a good snooker table but back then it was a rare day when I didn't put in a few hours. When you get to where you fully expect your banks to fall on that Riley you will be a monster on a pool table. One warning though, you have to keep up your play on a pool table too. Focusing solely on the snooker table will hurt your pool game.

Did I mention I am green with jealousy??

Marv,
There are several 12 foot snooker tables just here in Indy (all in private residences). I'm not sure of the exact pocket dimensions; but the ones I have seen all have more generous pockets than the 10 foot "American snooker" table at the local pool hall.

When we re-build Betmore's Basement in a year or two; it will have the 9foot GCIV and a 12 foot snooker table (a friend has a 9foot Diamond and a very nice heated Verhoeven billiard table; so we will have most games covered).

When are you inviting your AZ buddies over to play on it? :p

I'm sure you've looked at the snooker section here and seen all the youtube links that Scaramouche has put together. Some absolutely amazing play.

From what I've seen on youtube, John Schmidt could run a 100+ pretty quickly if he practiced a lot. The snooker pros are fantastic but I've seen a LOT of matches where they were missing all kinds of shots. I think if John spent a month potting the black and busting open reds, he'd run 100 fairly often.

He'd still get drilled in the UK I'm sure, but top US pros pocket balls pretty damn good. The fine points of the safeties would take quite a while to learn, but if John had Terry Griffiths work with him for a few days, John might surprise some folks.

I have to drive over an hour just to find a snooker table where I'm at.

Yeah, I know there's 'Snooker' tables in US, but there really is a huge difference compared to the tables they play for example in the World Championships.

Huh, did he really say that?

I don't want to bash this guy, he's a champion player in Pool and wants to promote it well, but for sure his ideas about Snooker are from the woods.

I remember him admitting that all his long runs in Straight Pool are made with big pockets. That's why IMHO all these 'records' are always more or less accurate. Running 200 with Tournament Edition Metro (Brunswick) might be harder to do, than to run 400 with ordinary Metro table..

In Snooker the difference can be even more, as pocketing the balls (specially from near the cushion) becomes far more difficult when played with the REAL table. And, I believe the pockets have been standardized since they started the official World Championships, which was about 1977..

Being that there are 15 reds to bust open and then shoot a colored after every red, WHAT would be stopping John Schmidt from running centuries after some practice? A century can be run in ONE rack. If John can run in the 400's with bigger balls and bigger pockets, whats to stop him from making a century with smaller balls and smaller pockets? Quentin I have an idea, why don't you put up some cash for how long it takes Schmidt to run a century on a real snooker table. I think it would be alot sooner than you think.

You guys act as if pocketing a snooker ball on a snooker table is like pocketing a Pyramids ball on a Russian Pyramids table.

To add something here; when top pros play with those tournament snooker tables (you can see from You Tube many clips), balls which are frozen to the cushion are (almost) impossible and seldom you can see anybody attacking to those. There's a good reason for it.
In Pool, tightening the pockets makes naturally the game much more difficult, but in Snooker it takes away many shots. To run 100 in that conditionings in Snooker, is about the same as running 200 with buckets in 14.1.

Marv,
Actually, I wasn't clear on this point. The 12 foot tables I am familiar with are evidently at Championship specification (owned by Brit transplants who are fanatical about their game and tell me their tables are the standard). I was just observing that I thought the pocket size was fair; and that our local 10 foot table must actually have tougher pockets than the World Championship standard.

If you have some measurement data, I can always measure the pockets the next time I invite myself over to play (to make sure they aren't blowing smoke).

But then again, I am no expert...this is just what I've been told.

Well I know much of both, and what I can tell you is that general american opinion about what kind of game Snooker is, is far from the woods.

Maybe Fatboy, if this table what he gets is really gonna be EXACTLY the same as the official tournament table is, can invite you and others try it.
My bet is, that if John would gamble in those conditionings against a top Snooker pro, the top pro could give John 27 games on the wire race to 30. I'd guess the score would be 30-27 in the end, but you never know, so that's why the spot is 27, not 29.
I don't know Quinten's speed nowadays, but in his prime I'm sure he could have spotted John +50 points per game in Snooker.
If John would practice for two weeks in those conditions, he might run couple of centuries, but most likely only if he'd spread the balls in a way it would make the game easy. When there's an opponent playing good safeties, he'd have to open the rack with his own inning, and that's a different story then.
I doubt, even when practicing alone, for two weeks, John could make a total clearance in that table in Snooker.

Sorry if someone gets offended, but you'll understand what I'm talking about after you play couple of frames with those tables..
