one of my roundtuit projects
No help to you but I plan to put together one using G-10 pins for myself. Several good reasons for making one and I think it will play just fine. Two well put together joints shouldn't play any differently than one well made one and even one poorly constructed joint is too many.

why not just carry a plane jane j&j jump break? It breaks into 3.
Sheldon LeBow made mine. It plays great and feels solid. He uses a vinyl or vinyl-like insert on the front joint that seems very snug and solid.
Another tip: Nittany Leather makes a fantastic case for a 3-piece cue (and other fine cases). Here's mine:
If you travel often, I highly recommend it. You still have to check the cue, though.

I used to play in a BCA league with a woman that bought one of those 5-piece cues that comes with a little carrying case.

Years ago, I travelled on business by air and shot in bars in the evening to kill time. All too often, the house cues had slip on tips that killed the hit and feel.
I had a 2 piece Valley cue that I had Lil Al Romero make into a jump break before they were available. I then had Al cut the shaft in half with a phenolic joint. It was a bit front heavy but with Le Pro tip, it hit good - better than the slip on tip.
This also allowed me to put the four pieces into my shuitcase or back pack as carry on.

i was at my mothers house and i saw this leather case in a pile of stuff. i opened it up and low and behold it was an old 5 piece cue that i used to carry around with me husslin years ago.. i used to carry these around pretending to sell them. it actually has a nice case that is about 6"x15".
when i'd go in a place trying to sell these i had everyone trying to match up with me. they would actually fight over who could play me. the sad thing was i could usually beat all of em with my 5 piece with the screw on tip.
sad thing was every once in a while someone would actually buy one. go figure?

Great story.
Usually, one is warned not to play a new player who brings his own 2 piece cue.
I never heard about being wary of a 5 piece - if memory serves, those 5 piece were cheaply decorated with wierd inlays and such to enhance the ruse.
Back to "Stay away from the new player that has a 2 piece cue and run away from the player that brings his own table.
Sam...PM BrewBob here. He has a custom made 3 pc cue (all 3 pieces the same length). I shot with it, when he was at pool school in San Ramon in January. It played GREAT. He's not far from you, and could probably show it to you, and steer you to who made it for him.

I've got one. It hits stiff but other than that I like it just fine. I don't use it much because as somone else said, you still have to check it when you fly, so it's not that convenient.

Alex Kanapilly...Yes, but at least it's protected in your checked suitcase (I admit that doesn't protect it from being stolen...which is probably your point). BTW, yours looks a lot like the one I saw last January in CA. Nice cue!

Most pool players are fine folks. There are a few that aren't and when they are out of town and hungry or need gas money they are the ones that recognize the value of a nice case and the likelihood of a nice cue being inside. We can lay something over a cue case when we run out to eat or something but I feel that is almost as obvious as leaving it exposed although I figure a little insulation and sun protection is always a good idea when leaving cues in a vehicle for an hour or three.
Anyway, that is the main advantage I see to a three piece, it fits into things that don't look like cue cases when at and in the area of big events. I want a nice case for my three piece if I find I like one but I'll also fit a cheap plastic hardcase that something cheap came in or is sold cheap at somewhere like biglots to hold my three piece cues.
Well yeah, if I like one I'll like two better!

If I remember correctly, Joe Callaluca made a 3-piece travel cue for catscradle, a member of my league, but I haven't found the thread in which it was mentioned.
Thanks. It's only inconvenient because I never check a bag during my short business trips, just too much of a hassle. If I got to play more I'd bring it along but I really don't get to play pool as often as I used to on trips.
Sheldon has sold a few of these cues now so they are around. The case was a great deal also.
