Are Custom Cues a waste of money?

I shoot with a custom. It's the best hitting cue I've ever had, but it doesn't necessarily mean I would never shoot with a production cue again at some point. And I didn't spend a fortune on it, either. It doesn't make me any better or worse, but what I like about it is the satisfaction of knowing that it's a one-of-a-kind that I designed myself. At any pool hall or tournament that I ever go to, no one will pull that same cue out of their case.

Truly it is the Indian and not the arrow. Just imagine if Efren was playing with that $6,000 cue and you had your house cue.

That's not the point. The point is I just don't get why someone is more focused on their cue than they are on their game. But other people can do whatever they want with their money.

To me it's more of an art form then a car analogy. Would you pay a Million for a Rembrandt or $50 for a copy.
If you can afford a nice cue then no one should say anything about it.
Sounds like penis envy:D
A really expensive cue might not make you shoot any better but it makes you feel better. That's all that matters in our short life spans.
Work hard, have a family, children and nice things to make you comfortable.
Isn't that what life is about?

love of the game

Been playing with customs since 98. Can I run a 3 pack? Far from the truth. I enjoy the game of pool. Wether playing league or playing the ghost or a friendly match up for small stakes.

I happen to find my joys of the game in the craftsmanship of a custom/collectiable cue AND the the comradiere of friendly competition and sportsmanship.

Some find joy in matching up and taking someone's bankroll.

Different facets of the game yet all under the "umbrellla" of pool.

Two of the strongest players in my room- one plays with a Tiger sneaky. The other plays with a malacite/ivory Bobby Hunter. Go figure.

So are customs worth the money? The right custom YES. And all the "right" customs start with an "S" < collectors will get this.

lifes too short to drink cheap beer, play with broomsticks or eat tough steak.

live with no regrets, including spending a few hundred or thousand on something you have passion for.

You forgot... smoke cheap cigars

There, I fixed it for ya. :thumbup2:

The car - cues comparison is wrong imho
A ferrari F430 has much better performance than let's say a 40000$ car. Ok the Ferrari has more prestige, probably better looking, but the performance are way higher than a 40.000car.
But, a 20.000$ cue has better performance than a 2.000$ cue? Usually not. A player choose a custom cue only because of the look, exclusivity and so on, but not only the performance.

Although you can't see it while you're shooting with it, a cue that YOU regard highly is a pretty big boost to your attitude and mental game. A sound, straight, well made cue can be had for a couple of hundred...anything beyond that is for resale value or personal satisfaction, which IMHO is perfectly honorable. All my cues have spent years (or will) in pool rooms and/or bars, ranging in price from $210 to $1400. None of them are or will be for sale. I prefer Old School spliced forearms and stainless steel joints...maple, ebony, ivory and ring-work. I learned a long time ago to worry about my money and leave others alone to do what they want with theirs. If you think a custom cue is a waste of YOUR money, okay. It's not a waste of MINE.

Craziest thing I ever saw was a strong road player who covered the butt of a rather high end custom with duct tape from joint to bumper to make it look like junk. Now THAT was weird!!!

I agree there is a certain comfort knowing you have a custom cue, dosn't have to be fancy,Gives you confidence knowing who built it.
The advantage with custom is, if you know what specs you like, you can get a cue to play exactly as you it want too!!!
I have had the same cue now for the last 5 years that cost $950,for what i've got out it, its not a waste of money;)
With the amount of cuemakers out there today you can get them built for a lower price then most top production cues will cost you!

I have Dale Perry that I paid $150 for that I use at league. It probably lost a third of its value the first time I chalked it up. My serious playing cue is a Gina that will almost assuredly always be worth what I paid for it.

You tell me which was a waste of money. In my opinion neither was. For the price I paid for the DP I will surely get my money's worth out of it, and it plays quite nice. But there is no comparison to how well the Gina plays. I enjoy the game more with Ernie's cue in my hands and because of its investment value it essentially cost me nothing. So from my perspective I bought a DP that cost me $150 and invested in a Gina that probably cost me nothing.

I am starting to think and realize that expensive custom cues are a waste of money. I know this may sound controversial but give any good pool player a house cue and have him practice with it, this player will do amazing things with it. Heck, you can give him a broom stick.

The question remains....are these expensive cues overrated? They have nice jewels in them and the fancy BS, but the really good players in today's world can easily shoot with their sponsor cue.

Mezz or Predator are fine examples of playing cues that the pros use. They do their job and they play great.

I have yet to see a pro play with anyting over 2K....

thoughts?

P.S. A majority of the players in my pool hall who have these fancky cues can't play worth a lick, if their life depended on it...........

You never seen a pro with a cue over 2K ? look at Ralf Souqets cue

You get what you pay you buy crap you get crap. The sames for fot any other hobby in the world. Take my second Hobby RC Cars, Planes and heli's

I know someone that buys DP ebay cues and sells them for $200-$300 all day long.

Hmmmm

You are correct about the car analogy. It does not really work here. The better auto comparison would be do you want your brand new sports car, with biege paint, hubcaps, and no hood scoop. Or would you prefer candy apple red, chrome 18" wheels, and hood scoop.

A $300 sneaky will play the same as the $3000 custom, (from the same maker) the more expensive one just has more options. Same performance from both....

So, you can have the strip down version or all the bells and whistles. Completely your choice. If we all liked the same thing it would be a pretty boring place. I like sneaky's and all the bells and whistles. I'm glad cues are cheaper than cars cause I can afford to have more than a few....

Let's apply the same question here... These are both human females and the fancy ones usually cost ya a little more. Worth it?

Question..

Let's apply the same question here... These are both human females and the fancy ones usually cost ya a little more. Worth it?

Does the big one come with the wood post? Also...is she discounted since she's got a moldy stomach...or is that a sea cow tattoo?

Are buying custom cues a waste of money if you are just trying to improve your game?.... yes. Absolutely. I can play just as well with a bottom of the line predator for a couple of hundred dollars.

Are buying custom cues a waste of money... from a collectors standpoint. Absolutely not! Would you say that buying art is a waste of money? It's a hobby and I value my cues the same way I would hard currency. But they don't make me shoot better. I look at them more as my type of collectable artwork.

That's an Eddie Wheat post, Jeremy, and yes, it is included. I think the tattoo is a killer whale... a moldy killer whale... No extra charge!
