Brits and their chalk

The biggest problem I have is the chalk on the rail gets in my sight while on a shot and it distracts me. I would love it if everyone held their own chalk but that isn't going to happen any time soon.

I have looked at a few pouches but havn't ordered one yet. Anyone have a site they recommend to order one from?

My choice

This link is the type of chalk holder I have been using for the last 7 years. It loops over the top of your trousers and your belt. It's simple, it works, and since it's metal it's not likely to break. Mine has become so much a part of my game that it's instinctive. I never have to waste even a glance to find my chalk, all my attention is on the upcoming shot. I may just but another in case I ever lose the one I have now..

Maybe the blokes cawnt find their bloody chalk if they set it down farther than an awms-length away ;):D:D:D!!!

This is probably a good point. Ever forget where you laid the chalk? Now you're looking for chalk rather than concentrating on the next shot.

I remember a 3C tournament where a player was forgetting his chalk on the table and his opponent kept moving it, pocketing it, and knocking onto the floor. His game was more "find my chalk" rather than 3C. He lost. But probably was the better player too. But he got hustled. The old hide the chalk hustle.

Its usually a rule in 3C to take your chalk when finished but ok to set it on the table while shooting as long as you don't set it in a place that aids your aiming to a cushion.

For all you knife carriers like myself, this has the magnet embedded within the chalk holder itself, so you can just attach it to your knife clip in your pocket. Also comes with a lid to keep chalk dust out of your case. Best little accessory purchase I've made to date. I got mine for $7 per + $5 S&H. Comes with a cube of chalk too.

Its annoying to even watch people pulling chalk out of their pocket every shot. What's interesting is that Ike Runnels keeps the chalk in his bridge hand the whole time. He never lets go of it.s
clearly
I would annoy you to no end.

I never thought about this being a cause of miss alignment and putting your foot in the bucket (kicking your leg back rather than stepping in). Good point.

Here's a tip everyone. If you see someone pocketing chalk, check their pocket seam. The more torn up it is the greater the required spot.

Not that I'm a great player but I've got many pairs of jeans that can only be worn in a pool hall or working on a car. My left pocket is torn to shreads from inserting chalk. Maybe I should look at the pouch thing.

If you can bear the stigma, go with a pouch. If you're already wearing a glove, you might as well complete the set.

I was just thinking the same thing right before I read this. I wear a glove when I shoot and I own a chalk pouch (like Karen Corr's), but I just cannot bear the thought of the ridicule I may get if I wear the glove AND the pouch. Screw it, I think I'm gonna go ahead and wear the pouch on my next league night. If JoeyA can do it, then by-gawd so can the Maniac !!!

I have no problem with chalk on the table. I pick it up, I use it, I put it down. I don't like people who put the chalk face down and I don't like people walking off with it all the time. These are sharking moves and I've learned to ignore them. I always have my own chalk with me with my initials on the bottom so I can prove it's mine. I've tried chalk holders and don't like them. If I remember right, I've tried the apron. You want to carry chalk in your pocket, big deal:p

Hehehehe. Maybe there is some stigma attached to a glove or a chalk pouch but it must be in the minds of those who just don't "get it".

The glove is extremely practical for playing pool especially in high humidity conditions. The chalk pouch is very practical as well for the reasons that Coach Brett mentioned. If you are playing a match with someone who likes to remove the chalk from the table to inconvenience you (and there are some American players who do just that ;)) carrying your own chalk with you is a guarantee that your opponent won't be creating any angst in that regard.

Gloves and chalk pouches are similar to aiming systems. I never have been one to worry what the haters are saying about me personally. I might admonish them from time to time but for the most part, I just ignore them and their hate message.

I think if I found out that wearing a purse would better my pool game, I would probably try and find one that was practical. :D:D:D

Tonight, I went to Buffalo Billiards and no one said a word when I walked in wearing my chalk pouch on my belt. I played pretty well tonight considering that my wife and I shared a little red wine with our dinner.

One of the girls on AZBilliards makes them. If I can find her screen name I will post it here.

i don't really care if people want to put the chalk on the rail or not (i use a chalk holder myself) as long as they put it face up and not get chalk dust everywhere, but they need to have just 1 piece and take it with them. i hate having chalk cubes all over the table and having to constantly move them out of my way when i'm shooting. snooker and carom has a nice understood etiquette about chalk, but not so in pool.

In world rules eightball the game that dynamite (one of the best players in the world at it by the way) transferred from there is a rule that states:

The referee will prevent any unauthorised marking of the table. If a player causes a block of billiard chalk or other foreign matter to be on any part of the table it is not a foul. However, the referee will ensure that the item is removed.

Hope this helps a bit?

I agree. The EPA has it right... Particularly, section K in "Standard Fouls" items 9a through 9d.

What sort of decent, respectful pool player worth his/her salt approaches the table whilst smoking or drinking? Blasphemy.

As far as chalk goes--I don't want a piece on any rail anywhere within my line of sight... I tend to keep it in my pocket. The best thing would be if the greater billard's world adopted the Snooker tradition of dressing up a bit and wearing a vest, with a couple pockets.

I can't use any of those magnetic things. I "Brush" my chalk flat, working the corners and edges all the time.

I"m not gonna bore a hole through the middle of the chalk and "soil" my cue ferrule at the same time. I've lived in the PI for far too long.. Kuriput talaga.

One of the very first things I do when I'm about to play a set/match with someone is ask them if they are going to use the chalk that is already on the table (usually about 2-3 cubes of WELL-worn chalk). If they say that they are not, I then remove those cubes from the table. I carry my own cube with me to and from the table. When I'm in the chair, I place my cube next to my cue that is resting in the Q-claw. I'm kinda picky with my chalk. Since I brush it on (and NOT grind), I have no use for the cube once the hole gets about 1/2 the way down. I buy my chalk by the gross. Like another poster said, I put my initials on it with a Sharpie in case someone else wants to walk off with it (those free address labels you are always getting in the mail from various organizations are good to use also). When a cube gets too worn for my liking, I either leave it at the poolhall or I take it home, remove the paper wrap, re-wrap it with masking tape and use the other end (after a light sanding to remove glue residue). The re-wrapping makes for a fine, flat cube of chalk for brushing-on, but it's a major pain-in-the-ass to re-wrap.

Thanks to JoeyA and "Coach" Brett's reasoning, I'm going to definitely start wearing the pouch to league/tourneys from now on!!!

Wait a minute .... chalk pouch, glove, AND league night? Man you just hit the hat trick.

Its not so bad compared to when you're about to grab the chalk then your opponent snatches the chalk away from you after they missed a shot so they can chalk their tip...even though it's not their inning anymore.

At least I'm not the only one that has sacrificed a pair of pants to chalk. I used to have brass covers on mine but the corners would eventually wear through the pocket lining. Now I have one of the .50cal style chalkers (mine is a mini cue with a tip-pik hidden inside). Much safer on the wardrobe and no mess on the table.

What's not been said, is chalk can be dangerous, when knocked on the floor and you don't know it's there, and your walking & step on it as your rounding the corner pocket and you twist your ankle or fall down. Also, if your playing on a bar table, and you knock it in the pocket, it can cause problems, + if there's no good chalk in this honky tonk, deal with it. Another pain, is when you reach and knock the chalk on to the floor, it rolls often Under table, or the floors so dark that its almost impossible to find.
