Do you just lay around and look for spots to piss people off ? Honestly, you constantly stick your nose in and make some assinine snide comment, then when you are called on it, all of a sudden it is "why does everyone always pick on me?" You really enjoy this don't you? Do you exhibit this same style of interaction in real life?

JAM made an analogy. One that most of us understood. Thanks for correcting her and enlightening the masses. While I do not always agree with everything JAM says, one thing I am sure of is her sincerety and her deep seated love of the game. She is one of the most respected posters here for a reason. Why don't you keep your history lessons to your self.

So, we might as well get on with it. Lets, hear how much of a mean, bad, know nothing about pool, person I am for picking on little ol' just trying to help everyone Russ.

Your cute little last line there lost you what tiny bit of respect I had left for you.

Tap! Tap! Tap! and Amen!! Wishing Russ would just go away.

Russ:

Mike calls home and his brother answers.

Hi Mike, gotta tell you the cat is dead.

Frank says, “Ahh Mike you know how I loved the cat, That’s no way to break it to a guy. Start with something like, the cat was on the roof, they tried to get him off and the cat fell, they took him to the vet and he didn’t make it. See, you gotta ease people into it.

Mike says – OH, OK. Well Mom was up on the roof.

Some times you need to be a little creative, even when you think your being creative.

Now that was just for a other stuff and grins. I am married to a lady just like you and if nothing else she is easy to live with, a bit abrupt at times, but easy to live with.

I think this is a great idea, and if I could go and sweat the tournament for a few bucks, I would. Hopefully, pool magazines will be covering it and writing it up, and any/all other promotional tools also used, like posts here on az, to develop a reputation for it, and more and more people will be looking forward to the next one. If it works, sponsorship money will come, no doubt. Hopefully, it will be recorded (acustats?) and dvd's sold, cause I wanna buy one! From what I hear, the big money games and new genre road warriors are now in the far east...Tokyo, Singapore, Bangcock, etc....too tough to make a living and too crappy a lifestyle in the states. This kind of tournament is remenescent of Johnson City, which is very appealing to lots of folks, and I bet there's gonna be plenty of side action in Olathe too. I think this is a great idea. (sorry, no other drama. :p )

Sometimes my penchant for blunt honesty has its disadvantages, even in my work life.

I never in a million years would have thought of telling a little white lie in this situation. Not to say that it was a bad thing, but my psyche is just built to pretty much tell the truth.

Maybe it was watching my mother manipulate other people that turned me off from telling even the littlest lie.

I guess your "psyche" had the day off when you made that quote.

You're completely right, wayne.. My mouth overstepped my abilities by 4 balls. In fact, I'm gonna need 10-5 and the breaks instead of 10-7 and same.

I heard you're a champeen hiding in the wings to snap off unaware guppies like me.. :D :D :D :D

Short Bus Russ barking at me
"Yup.. But I don't think you'll believe in that C player stuff after I take the 10-7 you offered me and I cram it up your ***.....

Dang you better quit giving that "psyche" of yours the day off, you are backpedaling so quickly pretty soon you will be asking for what I offered a guy today "no matter what the results are you win".

I liked the earlier, unedited, version of this post. :D

But I too would pay a cover for most any event.

LOL, I'd just returned home from 12 hours at opening day of the local poker room with the new increased Florida limits and my wife told me that I was letting my personal dislike of Russ show by doing what I was accusing him of doing (sticking my nose in someone else's business). So, I deleted my original post and replaced it with a more mundane reply.

Russ will never fail to disapoint you with his know it all holier than thou attitude. For someone who has been taught not to judge others, he has made it a full time job for himself. With that said, I hope he makes it home and enjoys his new pool table and room. Good luck Russ!
Try thinking before you hit the enter submit button. May save you some grief.

Dan Tull has been making this sacrifice for years & has always turned it into a success. I would think that his pool room has had more yearly, big regional tournaments than any other pool room in the USA over the past 15 or so years.

When I was younger & much shorter in the pocket, I once thanked Dan for not charging at the door as other pool rooms were doing at the time. He accepted my thank you & said that he makes enough on cue raffles during his tournaments that he didn't feel the need to charge at the door. If that makes more people come, the better. Guess that is the reason why his pool room has bleachers in it during his tournaments. So many people, only way they can all sit. I remember this now and when I go to Olathe, I always play even though I have no chance. I always eat 2-3 meals a days in his pool room & don't walk out the door looking for somewhere else to spend my money.

Dan has been doing things first for years. The impromptu "Gomez Challenge" is still one of the greatest events I have ever seen in pool. It was a long time ago, so I am sure I will get some of the particuliars wrong but....David Gomez showed up in Olathe, told Dan to put $10,000 in his safe & he was going to play the 10 best players in the building a set for $1000 a piece. Dan turned it into the Gomez Challenge, and it became a single elimination, $1000 entry fee tournament. Matlock played the best bar pool I have seen in my life & ran over the field. Races to 15, I don't think anyone got past 6. until he actually played Gomez in the finals & Gomez got to 9.

I will surely be in Olathe during the ring games. If you love pool, anyone should try to rearrange their life for 4 -5 days so they can attend.

As an FYI David Gomez was in Olathe this past weekend and finished in the upper twenty or so people in the tournament.

David Gomez is a just a great action junky gambler. No b.s., just wants to gamble & has lots of heart. Glad to hear he is still hitting them.

Amen JAM!

Though it may seem like an Easy Street to travel around the country and give lessons, not every great player can be a good teacher. They are two different skill sets. Meanwhile, you still must keep a roof over your head and put food in your mouth. Being a gypsy or living out of a suitcase ain't all what it's cracked up to be, and believe me, there ain't no place like home! :D

Tap, tap, tap! You'd better REALLY love what you do, or the traveling and living in hotels (or your car) gets VERY old VERY quickly! I feel extremely fortunate to have my passion as my job!

You are very fortunate to be doing what you love. I always admired Hopkins, Sigel, and other players who managed to find a niche in the pool industry and make a profit. Coming out ahead competing professionally in the year 2007 is difficult for every professional pool player, especially the ones who are not sponsored.

Anyone who travels on a regular basis has probably had some nightmare hotel experiences. :D Me personally, I saw some great big black ugly bugs craw across a bed in Gainesville when the light went on upon entrance(refused to stay there and left immediately), swatted tiny little flying black bugs in Richmond and had to endure a strong mildew smell the entire night in the room (Richmond was sold out that night, nowhere else to go), and then I got my laptop stolen in New York while attending a pool tournament during the day. :(

What's your worst hotel experience? Man, I've seen some humdingers. Today, I usually stick with Marriott, Holiday Inn Express, et cetera, which can get expensive, but I cannot sleep comfortably in the economical lodging facilities, and for the traveling player who's in the tournament, a good mattress on the bed is very important. :p

Somebody should post up some lodging factilities for the Olathe Bar Table Kings tournament. The phone numbers of the pool room and hotels would be helpful to prospective players and spectators. This kind of info is great when going to pool tournaments, getting it ahead of time, and the locals know best.

I'll bet that if a person googled Olathe they'd find motel information. Just a thought.

That is a sure-fire way to get the names. I have done that a lot when traveling to these pool tournaments.

It is helpful, though, to get a local's opinion, if you're lucky enough to know one. :p

I have had nightmare experiences, picking hotel names off the Internet. If I stick with Marriott, I usually am safe. Comfort Inns are hot and cold, same with the Days Inn. I'm probably just picky today, but I cannot get comfortable in some hotels, especially if there's loud noises in the hallway all night long. It's scary when you're in a strange city and don't pack a weapon.

TripAdvisor.com is actually a great resource for lodging ratings.

55 bucks a night is very reasonable! WOW! :)

Worst?

Let's see, there was the room over the kitchen with the strong natural gas smell in it . . . there was the room with the heavy smoke smell from a recent fire in the building . . . there were a few that I abandoned because the roaches were bigger than I am . . .

What really burns me is that the names like Comfort Inn, Best Western, all the franchises are so up and down. One city it is nice the next city a flop house. In the fairly recent past I have paid forty dollars for a great room and over a hundred for a room that my dog would turn his nose up at. I even stayed at a Hilton that should have been low rent.

Bugs, odors, mold and poor service are bad enough, but three times I've had people come into my room that didn't belong there. Once through the main door and twice through the adjoining room door ( and the door on MY side was locked both times)..... while I was in the room.
