Dennis Orcullo banned from USA for five years

When anybody breaks the laws of another country, there should be consequences.
I don’t disagree. Dennis dogged it somehow and there are repercussions. I’m just a guy that likes pool and thinks Dennis is the best all around player in the game today and it sucks we won’t be seeing very much of him for awhile regardless of the circumstances. He plays as many if not more tournaments here as any American and stays in action as much as anybody. I’ll personally miss his presence in the US pool scene very much. I didn’t start the thread to start a policy debate, just sharing info about one of the games best players.

I just want to clarify that I don't have all the answers. I'm no immigration expert. I do know what happened to Dennis though. He is okay and on his way home. I'm getting educated now on the best way to deal with this. It looks like there may be hope for a reduction in time but it could also be a long process in making that happen. Yes, it's a mess that probably could have been avoided, but it's not the end of the world. We just have to deal with it from here. Lord knows I've made my share of mistakes. The hard ones are the ones we learn from.

One other thing. THANK YOU to everybody who's showed concern for Dennis and the people who have offered constructive advice both on here and privately.
Sounds like he made an honest mistake and is now realizing the full ramifications.

I hope you are able to find him some legal assistance to reduce the severity of the punishment.

He is a great player and we all enjoy seeing the best play close to home. He is also such a friendly and helpful person.

What is the scene like in the Philippines in terms tournaments and matching up? Will he be able to make a decent living off pool staying home? Perhaps he can travel to other parts of Asia and Europe for tournaments, but there doesn't seem to be much side action in those parts of the world.

Boohoo go cry to Mike Howerton, or buy the Forum, and run like an owner.

Your crying is like a bad broken record, fook off.👎

Funny this is wonder if Dennis had to pay fine before being allowed to leave USA.

Friend got caught over starting Visa in Europe front what country, before he was allowed to leave he was fined like $46.00 US.☠️

Well if Dennis wants sympathy he can look in dictionary to find it.

Dennis might be great Pool
Player, but should get he was GUEST in USA, and subject to our rules and regulations.

Just like someone who is guest in his home country is subject to their laws & regulations.
But those sentiments and duties don't apply to Azb and you'll continue to soil yourself all over it.

Sadly it all comes down to politics....federal government is encouraging on our freedoms.

This poor guy...a world class athlete from a friendly country and we ban him.
“Encouraging“ on our freedoms. Your education is showing.

Jay,
If I can help in any way, if only to talk through ideas, or more, give me a call.
I’d love to help any way you see fit.

By the way, Dennis is really fortunate to have you as his best friend.
Friends, real friends like you only come along rarely.
It is obvious to even casual watchers you are in with both feet to help your friend.
Again, let me know.

How do we know he left just one day late when he returned to the Phils prior to trying to come back this time?

I didn't read that in Jay's story unless I missed it. Which is possible.

If he was just a day late due to flights or covid prior to leaving would have been the best time to clear that up. Not trying to re enter.

People who try and follow the rules are always the low hanging fruit for USCIS to get tough with.

My wife has a couple of relatives back in PI I would love to get here to work in my auto shop but alas, we don't want poor people is our official position unless they are refugees or fake refugees. Then they can have entire congressional districts.
The point I was trying to make is that I hear of people over staying their visa for years...

For Dennis to receive the same treatment or punishment for a day or two violation related to covid and flight cancelations is horrible.

He flies back all the time and has his residence and home in PI and not the USA.

He flies to international events and many European countries could have been denying flights from the states due to our c9vid status. He probably got caught up due to nothing malicious on his part toward our customs and immigration policy. ....

Thanks for the update. Last night, I was reading about all the airline cancellations due to the Omicron variant. Dennis could have experienced difficulties in getting a flight due to this problem. It is a known problem about airline cancellations.

On a bad note, the entire pool worlds in USA will be missing Dennis' action and tournament competition.

But, on a good note, he's a celebrity in Philippines, and his family, loved ones, and friends will enjoy having him around 24/7, as will he.

That’s true he made a huge mistake.

I’ll bet the under 5 years.

let’s put a line on this and gambol!!!!
No way he is out for 5 years. A realistic line for this would be 3.5 years. I'd still take the under.

From Rodney Morris on Facebook! Hahahahaha!

Honestly I go easy on him. 10 years ago he was pretty cool. I think age has kicked in.

I noticed that after being gone from here for 7 years. People change. I fixed my writing a bit. Cowboy got mad. Who knows? In any event I don’t wish bad on him. I hope he finds happiness and peace

Best
Fatboy😀
It is fukcing HIGHlarious when he pushes back.

His idiocy is incredibly entertaining.

Man this sucks. I feel for the guy. I can’t think of another player who has been in battle more than this guy. Between tournaments and action games he’s always in the mix, I’m sure it’s going to be a real change of life for him. But make no mistake, there is no gray area here. Like zero- even if you have wealth. My brother has lived in Spain for the last 15 years and has duel citizenship. He also has a business here in Florida and one of the first years he was over there he came back more than normal. He was in his lawyers office in Fort Lauderdale and casually commented that he’s spending way too much time in the states and needs to get back home to Spain to see his family. The lawyer looked alarmed and my brother couldn’t understand why. Turns out you are only allowed to spend a certain amount of days in the states or you get your income taxed. I could be wrong but I think it’s only 30 days. Anyway, they carefully added the days together and he was on a plane to the Bahama’s within the hour. Worked out great for me because I wound up bringing his boat over and we fished for five days, but it could have been the most expensive trip ever.

Hopefully Dennis catches a break and gets his sentence knocked down a few years. Then again I’m sure he’s ready to play anyone that comes down.

It will bite if we find out he overstayed his visa hours or one day. Over fifty percent of illegal aliens come over here on a valid visa and never leave the last I knew so the basic problem is very real. However, someone overstaying one day already had plane reservations and obviously was not trying to beat immigration. Afterall, they caught him on another trip in when he presented his papers, not while he was overstaying his visa for months or years.

Seems likely that somebody dimed Dennis out or perhaps some zealous official noticed plain black and white on past records. Perhaps software automatically redflags such things now? All speculation, I am not an immigration expert. A five year ban for one day does seem very harsh. Other issues may come up as well though. Did he always come here on a work visa? It seems like those that travel the world to compete should have an easy process to travel.

Not enough details for us to know but the punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime.

A special thanks to Jay for updating us with the facts he has!
