Dennis Searing

I called & emailed DS to have some work done. A new tip and possibly a new shaft. I never heard from him. His cues are beautiful but only as good as the shooter. I would not wait YEARS for any cue.

fellas ,no need to talk about Larry
he has nothing to do with this other than he made me a cue

he makes a really nice cue that I like
I am willing to bet my money that it is a better looking cue than
the plain Searings on here

No need to respond with sarcasm, either bet your money or don't

it has nothing to do with what I am saying or what your friends are
saying

If you guys want to bet $1000 and can figure out
a way to have a test for which hits best or which has the best finish

Remember ,its just me making a bet, these cue makers have nothing to do with my extravagant claims

It amazes me how people get upset when a friendly bet is offered

We all know who schon is,who wants to bet that searings hit better?
propose your test in a PM

Isn't this what pool players like?

I thought Scott would beat Alex, maybe I am wrong here too

But for my money I prefer Schon

thanks for the compliment

I don't sell these cues, but in the last 2 weeks since I bought it
around 4 people asked who made it and after hitting it,took Larry's number

David G,a player of some repute, liked the looks so much,he walked across the room to test it and pronounced t"terrific hitting and beautiful"

With this kind of response,I figured at least somebody else might like them too.

Larry used to paint Carrol Shelby's personal cars and is a successful businessman
who happens to love making cues and in my opinion is very good at it.

I don't claim to know much about cues, but it looked like a chance to pick up an easy $1000

Who can blame a fella for that?

Hey Dean,

Can I buy your spot on Dennis's list?

Let me know please,
Chris

Obviously Larry Vigus is a better maker than Searing because you say so.

Deano was ready to join the chorus on Searing after hearing the hype, but failed to get his hands on one and is butthurt. Larry made him a plain jane, and Evan at Schon agreed to build those dubious "tributes," so in Deano's universe, Larry Vigus and Schon make better cues than Dennis Searing.

Make sense?

Searing balance, fit, finish, and wood quality is far superior to most.

I agree completely. Dennis Searing is brilliant and extremely talented at crafting cues. His attention to detail is very keen but also part of what slows him down to a crawl. I know well the feeling of being frustrated with waiting years and years with sparse communication. The Searing Border Brother cues I received in late 2010 were the finest crafted cues I've had in my hands. Incredible hours of labor had gone in to each one. There is a level of detail in the cues that is dumbfounding. I parted with the Border Brother cue I had originally intended to keep. Although a superb playing cue, no cue will in itself elevate my game. Only practice and competition will.

In a conversation I had with Dennis last summer, I urged him to issue a statement on AZB to clear the air to help take some pressure off himself and his waiting customers. Maybe I shouldn't say this but I will. It is my opinion that at least 90% of the 1500 people on Dennis' wait list will not receive a new cue from him or when they do they will be too old to enjoy it!

I hope that Dennis will eventually streamline his building proceedures so that it will allow him to produce more cues. I cannot defend his business practices but in my knowing of him he is a good man.

Dean, you know how to drum up the action....lol.

Would love to see something like this come off, but think it's gonna be pretty difficult to arrange a totally blind test that fairly takes into account subjective playabilty.

Somebody pony up a dime. I'm a railbird on this one. Could get interesting...

Misery

I am with you DEANOC. I had been on his his waiting list since about 2004 or sooner. Then about 4 or 5 years ago I had several conversations with Dennis Searing and passed many emails back and forth. I thought all was good and I would be getting my new cue soon. We had discussed veneer colors, points, inlays, etc. We were discussing his new way of doing veneers that were virtually seamless. He even sent me photos of some of the veneer work he was doing at the time.

Then all of a sudden there was silence. No more responding to my emails and no more returning my phone calls. It was as if he had disappeared.

Very piss poor customer relationship from someone that is suppose to be so nice and so tallented.

Bob T.

I am so glad to hear that,I thought it was just me.I ordered a cue from him at the 2000 USOpen.Everytime he sees me he tells me he WANTS to make me my cue. I also have had e mails and even ph. Calls from Dennis. He called me on Sept. 23, 2011, and had the same conversation as you did, veneer colors, wrap etc. Then just like a light switch, he was off, no more calls no e mails.Dennis if you are reading this , lets never discuss my cue again, I do not want one.

I don't know much about searing, never played one, but I'd do the same with my Keith no questions asked. However when we deal with personal preference, like always, there is no RIGHT answere.

I would however like to find an old article. I've been told by a couple of different people that Billiards and Bagels use to let you hit something like 3 different cues for x amount of money, and Jim would measure the hits on a speed gun. If energy transfer is the name of the game, my guess would be he has pretty good idea of who's cues average more... I'm not sure if this is true, but It would be cool if Jim could chime in.

One thing that does blow me away is how easily people get up in arms when talking about hire end cues. Personally I wouldn't pay over $500 for ANY cue where CNC and Panto-graphs have been used. It's a personal preference that most cue makers turn there nose up at, but that's how I feel after see and playing with Keith Hanssen's cues.

I do think however it is absolutely ridiculous to wait for years to get a cue. Too many good builders out there doing crazy stuff out there with little to no wait time.

Just my little $.02,

Justin

meh, nothing to get excited over. My Blackcreek looks better.

I agree, not very good looking. Have seen MANY MANY cues I like better. Nice wood, but way too much of the same thing with a pattern. That wood would look better in just a buttcap and in points or thick rings.

This guy knows how to match woods http://www.blackpearlcues.net/

The 2nd to 6th pictures is probably one of my favorite all-time cues, I'll be ordering that thing one day.

So far in this thread, the following cuemakers can give Dennis the 8:

Larry Vigus
Schon
Keith Kustom Kues
Al Bautista

Keep 'em coming guys, I am entertained.

Since I posted a link to show deano's cue I will post this link
showing some pictures of an awesome Searing !

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=197122

I really like both cue's the Searing is amazing and im sure worth
the wait and price . Deano's cue made by Larry Vigus azb user name
63Kcode in my opinion is very impressive with awesome woods
and a deep finish that looks to be second to none .

I bet they both play good and I would be proud to own either one .

Well thats my two cents worth

1000 words

Who knows why they have such a reputation

if there were a fair way to test them I would bet Schon cues play better

I doubt that most of the people who praise them so highly have ever hit one.

One thing I do know,he told me I was on top of his list over 4 years ago
and then went years without returning my calls, I seriously will put up money to bet that the schon hits better, plays better or is preferred by more people

I would also bet that the Larry Vigus that I play with hasa better finish and hits better too

Pool players like to bet, here is an offer to bet

This is just my offer and is not backed by the manufacturer.

I will also bet my Larry Vigus is hands down better looking,it is now in the cue gallery

please post if anyone wishes to call this bet

dean

They say a picture is worth a 1000 words, I just saw your cue in the gallery.I would not bet you. That is one beautiful cue.

thanks for the reply
you are not the only one who would not bet against me

in fact no one wants to bet
and several have agreed with me

i really like that cue Larry Vigus made me,I have owned several expensive cues
over the years and I like a fancy cue ,but I like this cue also.I get plenty of compliments
on the beautiful woods and I love the hit of the cue>

I wonder if Larry will make it in the pool business,he seems too polite and willing to actually help,he also delivers on his promises,I like this, but many people must prefer false promises, high prices and slow deliveries.

Just for the record!

Larry Vigus IS a very talented cue maker. He's only been at it a few years but his cues are incredibly nice and play beautifully. His wood choices, fit and finish are about as good as you'll find anywhere. Not to mention you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer guy.

Totally unfair to drag him into this. Whatever this is.
