Well almost everyone...............

We've got a weekly handicapped pool tournament that I and about 20-30 others play in every week. I give up a lot of weight every tournament and sometimes get the cheese in spite of giving up handsome spots. Some of my opponents are grinning ear to ear when they hear of some of the spots.

This past week, Buffalo, the owner sees that I am in the finals against one of the lesser players and announces with much fan fare, that I will be playing my opponent 11-2. When I play in the handicapped 9 Ball tournament, they sometimes pay a bounty to anyone who knocks me out of the tournament.

Sometimes, I wonder why I even try to play good pool. It was better financially back in the old days when I just hustled everyone who walked in the door. Now, I don't hustle and just wait for a payday that seldom comes my way, picking up scraps here and there in handicapped tournaments to supplement the cost of my pool habit.

And NO, I didn't win and my opponent even scratched once in two of the three games we played.

I was just wondering what the rest of you thought about how nice it is to have such appreciation for your game and yeah, it is my home pool room, Buffalo Billiards in Metairie, LA.. but more importantly, is it worth getting better?

Now you know the rest of the story.

Just chalk it up as entertainment. It happens to me here in Orlando also, I was even raised during a match, that is cold. It was not my first time in the tourny, but I went from a 12 to a 13 while playing the match because the TD was watching and thought I was shooting good. I thought he could have at least waited until next week. Tom

Yes, it is always a good thing

A couple of years ago, a small tourney at a bar, 4 blocks from my house, decided I should go to 2. It's a $5 entry fee, and $1 extra if you want a shot at the 8 on the break pot. The tourney is a race to 1, and can have as many as 25 some nights. Most of these people are league players, and some nights there are maybe 10 guys there who can run out at any given time. It's a good challenge, and I enjoy it. Lately, they have made 3 other players a 2 also, and the other bar tournies around town are doing the same thing.

I don't think I'd like someone changing my handicap in the middle of a match, or even a tourney for that matter.

Next week they'll make you shoot every shot with one foot on the rail, opposite handed, while quacking like a duck......

Let's see you win the cheese then buddy......

It's always worth the time to get better Joey, if thats what your passionate about. I'd just take the weight as a tip of the hat to your skills you've worked to attain over the years. I was barred from a tournament once for playing TOO SAFE lol. I still frequented the joint during the day, and the players still would play me cheap 5 dollar 9 ball, but 2push style and all balls spot. I just took it in stride, as should you with your crown there at buffaloes.

Best Wishes,
Keeb

Well at least you get the satisfaction of knowing that you play well and there is trepidation from your opponents side. I play so bad that the rat pack here call me if I am running late and offer to send a cab; not for me but for my dead money. Hmmm...not much of a fear factor.

too good?

I play bad pool now and don't make any money. I wish I could play good pool and not make any money.

We want more details on the loss

Sounds like a couple of things are going on here:

1. You have a strong game.

2. You are a good sport.

Both are compliments, hope to meet you one day soon....

Now that's a spot.

How about the high price of coin op tables? Pin ball and video games its to your advantage to play better but on bar tables the better you play the faster you run through the money.

I don't care if the table is made from the Ark 1.00 a game is way over the top.

And just how long did u think u could fly under radar ?

with modern technology...u lucky u lasted this long...U remind me of the guy Chris Miller was talking bout when he jumped up on the pool table & started crawling on hid belly like he wuz sneaking thru the grass...lol..j/k:grin:

Joey,

If you were commentating this final match and you were told that the TD was going to 'adjust' the better player, how would you have explained this to all your listeners?

Would you be one of those that laughed? or would you defend the higher skilled player's right to stay at the assigned handicap level?

Just curious. And, by the way, do you usually cash in this weekly tournament?

Im not sure I'm getting the point of this thread. Are you mad about having to give up spots in a handicap tourney?

If all local/weekly tourney's were open and everyone played even then there would quicky be NO tourneys. Do you want all of the lesser players to have no chance and just hand you the money?

Hey Joey,

I haven't met you in person yet but your forum presence is that of a very helpful and fun guy. I would be willing to bet some that you have probably helped many of the players at Buffalo's.

Seems to me they are just "messin' with you" because they like you and, at the same time, they do respect your game. They can't challenge you with their game so they are challenging you with the weight :)

The last time....

I had to give up a huge spot to my opponents, I was so scared to let them shoot that I forgot to miss!

That gave me the MOST memorable night of pool I ever had, and probably ever will!

That's me Troy; crawling on my belly through the grass like a reptile.

I would have said, "Uh-oh, it looks like the tournament director has made a decision to change one of the player's handicap and now it looks like he's got about as much chance of winning as a snow ball in hell."

I would have laughed with the rest of the whiners and then said, "That's a hell of a price to have to pay for improving your game."

And you have to define the term "USUALLY".

I am mad as hell that I don't have the heart to take advantage of any migrant workers.

With the load I have to carry I often feel like a Bedouin Camel. "I and my brothers against my cousins. I and my brothers and my cousins against the world." :D

That's idiotic. I would have told him to give me my entry fee back and that I was done right there and then on the spot. Changing a spot WHILE the match is in progress? If your opponent ran a rack was he all of the sudden moving up as well? How the hell does someone that moronic end up being a TD?

local tournaments

Hey Joey,

I know the feeling. Everytime I play in a local ty my oponents always find whre the 9-ball is or pocket another ball to win. I used to play APA. I was a 8 level in 9-ball and having to play level 2's all the time. I just kept playing and setting goals for myself. One year I had the most break and runs in 9-ball in the city. It's hard but hang in there your time is coming.
