Grady's daughter posted on Facebook that Grady has terminal lung cancer. I checked the first 2 pages here and didn't see anything.

Grady, I wish you the best, man.

Best wishes, Grady.

From Grady's Facebook page:

It is with deepest reget that I announce that my father has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. I know how much he is loved in his community, and now that he has decided to share his news...Here is his address at the hospice. 815 Old Cherokee Rd Lexington, SC 29072 Camelia Court 407A
I am sure he would love to read letters from any of his friends. - Marie

What an awful shame this is, and there really is nothing that can be said in the case of terminal illness. Should I ever encounter similar circumstances in my own life, I hope I'll have as many worthy achievements upon which to reflect as Grady Matthews.

I am so sorry to hear this.

I do not know Grady to be a smoker, perhaps he did in the old days, but he has been a proponent of healthier living since I have known him...

...side stream and second-hand smoke kills.

Really sad.. I am very glad I got to see him play a little bit up here in the north east. Watching him and Jack Colavita mix it up was pretty cool.

You never know what you've witnessed until its too late....

This is tragic on so many levels.

A champion's champion, commentator extra ordinaire, and a really nice guy.

Peace, Grady.

Best,

So sorry to here about Grady, I look at him as part of the family I have so many ACCU-STATS tapes and dvd's with Grady' playing or commentating

I spoke to Daughter the other day!

As we spoke the other day about your Dad's health, I kept my word and did not disclose the content of that call. When you gave me the info, a tear came over as does now as I type this post.

Grady I have been very good friends for over 40 yrs, I can honestly say We've never had a cross word to speak to another, just always willing to share eachother's knowledge of the cue games. He was always a great player and ambassador of the game with never ending efforts to promote tounaments.

One day He and I will meet again, and I'm sure our first words will about the game we both have devoted our lives to.

With deepest sympathy;

I saw this on Facebook as well and just could not believe it ... terrible news. My prayers are with you Grady. You are loved by millions who will have you in their prayers as well!

This is truly, terrible, terrible news. Grady's probably my all-time favorite commentator, because of his intellect, and ability to use language creatively to help the viewer understand the many decisions that the match and players being commentated upon face.

I would caution readers and responders here, however, *NOT* to get into any mention of second-hand smoke and the dangers (or any attribution to cigarettes or the tobacco industry), because certain viewers here (who smoke) will derail, pollute, and destroy this thread with knee-jerk self-defense reactions.

And this thread is no place for that kind of garbage. Let's keep this thread on track with odes to the great Grady Matthews.

In sorrow,
-Sean

Grady,

This is really bad news. We know how much you have loved and given to this game - especially one pocket.

It has been an honor to know you these past 19 years. Ever since you came to Alaska back in fall of 1992. You got 7 of us to go to your One Pocket event in Reno - (where the airport closed for snow fall). That was Jan of 1993.

You are a hell of a guy.

And you been doin' it your way for a long time.

Hang tough buddy,

Mark Griffin
