How many cues is to many?

I've recently started buying custom cues and have about five and I have been getting so much flack from people things like I cant believe you would spend so much on a cue. Its not like I really let things people say get to me I'm just curious as to what people of this forum think.

Also, anybody that drives faster than me is a maniac and anybody that drives slower than me is an idiot.

Actually, when you have more cues than you want, you have too many. Most of us don't NEED any cues. We don't NEED to play pool because we don't make our living that way. We have the cues because we WANT them. We play pool because we WANT to. So, the only way you have to justify how many cues you have is by how many you WANT to have. As long as you're not taking food out of your family's mouth to buy cues, then you will never have too many.

hey buddy your asking the wrong group of people! this is like going to the bar and asking how many just have one and go home,so if your looking for a support groupe youve found the right place! good luck! my advice to you is just collect what you like and dont let any body influence what you like!

I hear the same flack. Some people just dont understand how collectors/enthusiasts can pay thousands for a custom cue while they bang around with a production cue. I agree w/ GeraldG- as long as you can keep a roof over your head and food in on the table- keep collecting. Its a passion we all share

When you run out of room in your storage closet so you have to use your wife's closet and side of the bed.

- when you worry more about your cues than your family and pets,

- when you buy a programmable thermostat and de-humidifyer to keep the house at an even 65 degrees and dry year round

- when you insure your cues instead of your health or life

- when your friends want to hold your cues and you say "hands off"

- when you remember every year, maker, number of inlays, and last value of every cue but can't remember your kids names, grade in school, or ages anymore

- when you're evicted for not paying rent and living on the street with your stack of cues

then it's probably time to cut back a little.

I don't understand people who don't play with the cues they collect. While cues are an art form, they are functional art and it seems wrong to me to not use it in the manner that was intended. I don't have any uber-expensive cues, but I play with all of mine!

What I think it is your BUSINESS, and no one else's.

Tell the people who are trying to run you life, to mind their own BUSINESS, unless they Own YOU.

I am personally For Sale, but the Price is high. I would want a 2500 Square foot home with THREE CAR GARAGE, a New Porsche, New Mercedes, and New Pickup Truck, Plus All my Billed Paid.

Plus a Monthly Stipend of 5-7 Thousand Bucks for Mad Money.

I have six cues now and I can only play with one at a time. I agree as long as you don't compromise your basis of survival, get want you want. My brother who is an independent school head in PA says he knows people that have collections of fountains pens worth thousands of dollars-

Hahahaa....some of these are so true especially the one where the friends wants to look and I say "Hands off".

I can't stop, it's an addiction. Luckily I have a wife who's understanding.
I went to my first Billiard Expo back in 2002, and since then, I'm up to 26.

How many is too many

My way of collecting is the same way I do guns and coins.

I limit the number of cues to 13. That way I limit the cues and then make myself sell one to get another one. I always try to upgrade a little each time, I have sold 4 in the last few months and have bought 1.

My advise is to get to a number and then try to upgrade verses quanity.

My approach you do yours.

The "too many" number is a variable. If you have 5 then 6 is too many... lf you have 28 then 29 is too many... there's a simple formula

If X = number of cues owned and
Y = number of cues considered "too many", then

Y = X + 1

Works out great every time, and if you go strictly by this formula, you NEVER have too many cues.

I don't think there is a number you can put on a cue collection other than how many can you afford to own.

You do, I have seen you, and I do the same. Cues were meant to be used. All of the customs I have bought I have used for months at a time. We should have another Cue-O Rama soon so we can get some perspective on the new additions.
