Howard Vickery

I've only met him 1 time but I really like him. Have 3 of his Accu-Stats tapes in which he plays & many in which he commentates. A good, solid pro, known for tight saftey play. He's won the Senior U.S. Open 9 Ball and yet we hear little, if anything about him. Does anyone who knows him have any stories they care to share about this unsung champion?
Thanks.

Meeting Howard

Thanks for the link Dana!I had heard his name but had no idea of Howard's accolades.

I met Howard at the Turning Stone Classic by chance. I was going to be in the area and decided to play in tournament. My daughter, who is 7, was collecting autographs of the pros on her little Turning Stone T-shirt when this women, who seemed to know everyone, said," you need to get that mans autograph" pointing out Howard Vickery. A very friendly fellow whom everyone seemed to really like. I wish I had spent more time visiting with him.

I concur with Bigtruck...thanks for the link Dana! I really enjoyed reading that.

Best Eats!

I understand that no matter where you stand on U.S. Soil, Howard can tell you the nearest place to get a great meal. :)

Howard spends a lot of time in the Bradenton Fl area, and can be found most any time of day at many of the buffets in the area...

One hell of a nice guy, and is very focused whenever in a room, but look out if you match up with him, the claws come out and he takes no prisoners...

Enjoyed the times he would practice at Art's just watching his stroke

Bringing up Howard's name reminds me of Kenny Mccoy and Albert Stutterman

I always like Kenny and he was one of the better shooters I ever saw.

Howard is a long time (the longest) journeyman pro player. He has hung in there thru thick and thin. For a guy who wasn't a regular winner/contender on tour, he has managed to hang around longer than anyone else. Howard always played good, just not at the top level. If anything, his game got stronger with time and experience.

He is a genuinely nice guy, willing to take a moment with anyone and share his knowledge and good humor. He and Mike Lebron were a team thru the 80's, partnering up at all the tournaments. Both liked good food and they knew all the best restaurants, in every city where tourneys were held. Just ask him if you see him at Derby City. I'm sure he can tell you where to go in Louisville.

He has done something right, because he seems ageless. While all the rest of us have aged 30 years, he has aged about 10. This is not fair and I intend to complain. HOWARD!!!!

How good did Kenny McCoy play? When I was younger "the trucker" was almost mythical in his ability

Howard was a very solid, if not a top, pro, and most of the pool I saw him play was during the days of the PBT in the mid 1990's. I recall watching him rally from 6-0 down to go double hill with Kim Davenport during the 1996 PBT season, but Kim escaped for an excting 11-10 win.

Howard should also be recognized as a player who got involved in the administration of his sport. I recall that he served as Treasurer of the PBT in the mid 1990's and did a solid job in the eyes of most.

Howard still to this day whoops my ass at a local bar table tournament here in his half-year hometown.

When I lived near Columbus, I would go into players and he would be there playing, I was in awe. He would also go to like Marysville, etc. and play in those tournaments.

I was running around with Will Sloan at the time and he seemed to pop up everywhere. This was the time that Dane was also at players, Dee was up and coming, etc.

kenny Mccoy used to beat Howard like a red haired step child.Howard is a very nice guy.

At one of the Akron Opens, Howard got beat by Tony Ellin. When the TD was announcing the next matches the guy who was to play Tony next asked Howard if had any advice for his match against Ellin, Howard said you really don't want to miss anything and make sure you make a ball on the break.

After typing that it doesn't sound funny, it was though. It must of been in the delivery:) . Tony was blanking everyone 11-0 that year.

Jay...IMO, a huge part of the reason for Howard's longevity is due to the fact that he always has had a REAL JOB...aka a life! LOL Probably also responsible for him not always finishing at the top...but a great player nonetheless, and all-around nice guy! :D
