I am not really an Archer fan...

But as a member of a team in a event like the Mosconi Cup? He is worth his weight in gold. It is not only the game he comes out and plays in each match, but how he deals with his team mates and manages to get them out of ruts. Shawn was freaking TERRIFIED in the doubles match he had with Archer, he had blown alot of shots, shown that he was going to as Earl would say "&%$# all over himself" all tournament long, and instead of allowing that to just happen Archer goes into "coach" mode and basically carried Shawn through the match and did everything in his power to get Shawn out of his rut. He knew exactly what to say, exactly how to say it, and got the best performance he possibly could have from a guy who probably had a heart rate in the 150 range, was sweating bullets, and whose face was the color of a cherry.

While I am not a fan of Archer I will say that as a team mate you can find few better then him and there is for sure noone on team America even close to as important in the Mosconi Cup. Sure SVB is a great player, but he is a singles player and will generally worry only about "his" game and if his team mate is showing weakness he will generally stop at "nice try" and the team will go down swinging. Archer sees the weakness and jumps all over it and does what he needs to do to get that player some confidence at all costs, he took everything in that match on his shoulders and at the same time gave Shawn pretty much all of the credit for the success of every good turn in that match and it worked to get Shawn finally making some shots and won them a match. If Shawn has ANY other team mate in that match they lose for sure.

I was hugely impressed. Still not sure I like the guy due to alot of the crap, but I respect the hell out of the way he handled himself today at the Mosconi Cup and if the American's have any chance at all at winning this I expect it is going to come down alot to Archer getting everyone under control and getting them shooting like they all can.

Surely you're not referring to Hot Shot Shawn.
You know, the guy that hates Earl.

Lets see how they do on Day 2. The Team Captain is the one that is supposed to give the pep talks and get his team out of the ruts.

Another reason why Dennis should be on the team again.

kind of hard for the captain to get anyone out of a rut during a match.

Johnny Archer: Hall of Famer. Been playing pool great it seems like forever. Possibly the best player of all time. Pool Greatness!

Johnny is a great player....but there is this dude named Efren out there. Pretty sure when you start talking about the GOAT he is who you are talking about.

Johnny is by far my favorite player but I don't think he is the best that ever lived. Earl and Efren are two names popping out that are close (or even slightly better) to him pool-wise.

I have not been playing pool for a long time and I only knew snooker players before that. Not being from the US I didn't know any USA players. About a year ago I watched the 2009 and 2010 Mosconi Cup and my first impression when I saw Archer play was "Who the heck is this guy?" He seemed rock solid compared to the others. I remember handing out the DVDs containing the videos to another (ignorant) pool player from my hall and when we met up a few days later we were both like "Dude that Archer guy plays like a machine"

Archer is the flagship of team USA. He is much calmer mentally and my guess is that his fundamentals are a notch better than his teammates. (after all, in high pressure situations rock solid fundamentals come into play big-time) He is a true pro and right now it is JA vs Team Europe but I don't think this will last long. The other US guys will wake up. The question is when?

Not if you're a Jedi Captain.

How about pre game pep talks then. But I agree, as much as I have lost a bit of faith in JA for other things, theres no taking away from his ability to play.

It was quite obvious what he was doing for Shawn during the doubles match.

With all of the pressure of the audience and cameras, you make one mistake and your blood will run cold. It will be pretty much down hill after that.
JA was keeping him going just fine. Shawn made some great shots and got JA good shape.

I agree with you 100%. Johnny is not my favorite player to watch - he's slow and deliberate. But he's steady as a rock. A tremendous asset to the Mosconi Cup Team. Great performance Johnny! Keep up the good work.

JA is a great guy and nice guy to talk to. He certainly enjoys sharing his vast knowledge of the game. Bast of all time? Probably not, but damn good nonetheless.

Johnny is certified, 'bad ass mofo'.

No bout a doubt it.

Yep, and he will actually speak to you if you approach him and ask him how he's doing or whatever. None of the holier-than-thou, or "it's an honor for you to meet me" BS you get out of some guys.

Some of the best teams in the history of sports fought with each other but still won because they had the talent.

Earl should be on the team.

I didn't start watching till after this match. I would really like to see archer coach and shawn dog his brains out. Is this match posted anywhere?

I used to like Shawn, but once I heard how bad he spoke about some of the other players, I lost some respect for him. He was very opinionated and talked down about a few pros that are a class above him IMO. He falls into the Mika catagory, I like to root against him.

+1 clap, clap, clap

I gotta put JA in the Top 10, possibly Top 5 all-time as far as 9-ball is concerned. Now, he's no "spring chicken" anymore, but he's as good and steady a player as America has got, year in and year out. On any given day he has as much of a chance at victory as anyone on either team.

I haven't agreed with all of the things his APB has demanded as of late, but I still like and respect the man for all he has done for the game of pool over the years.

As far as who's the GOAT, well, there are too many different disciplines of pool that are/were in the forefront over the different eras of the game to accurately make that call. Does anyone really believe that Efren could have consistently beat Mosconi, Lassiter, Crane, or Greenleaf at Straight Pool or that any of the aforementioned greats could have consistently beat Efren at 9-ball or 1-pocket? I don't think so. When we speak of the GOAT we need to attach one of the pool disciplines onto the title. As in: Efren Reyes, Greatest 9-ball Player of All Time. Or: Willie Mosconi, Greatest Straight Pool Player of All Time. (These are just examples)

Efren could of beat anyone at almost any game, no doubt

In all reality, there IS doubt, since NOBODY is EVER gonna KNOW!!!

Much can be assumed/opined, but the actual truth will never be known. This statement is FACT.
