I am starting to take orders for building a cue....

I think the baby oil has seeped through your skin and into your head.

Most guys apprentice for someone or at least start out by doing repairs and minor mods etc. Not you. Impressive. I would send you a check but alas we don't know your name.

Nick

Nick, cut a guy a break. Maybe he is not a repair expert yet but at least he's trying to learn - He started this thread last night:

My player's shaft is getting very blue. I use a damp towel to usually clean it but I am looking for some products or conditioner that may take the blue out.

How many good products are there?

What are some of the major brands?

I hate stick hands....

Thank you in advance.

So obviously he's well on his way to master cue maker.

Actually, some of the greats just bought a lathe and started making great cues pretty much right off the bat.

The names Janes and Stroud come to mind.

In fact I would say most probably start out that way. There have been and are a lot of cue makers. I would say most of them probably started out "on their own".

Indeed some have apprenticed...but many did not. But numerous well know makers do have ties in some way, whether apprenticeship or otherwise, to some mentor though.

.

I'm sure you are correct doc, many of us have just stepped up, bought some tools and started doing the job, whatever that job was. Damn few have gotten money fronted on spec.
Wish I'd thought of that:grin:

hahha when i saw the topic on the first page i knew where the thread would end up...i honestly thought the OP was being sarcastic and was trying to make a joke abou some other cue maker in biz...guess i was wrong..
Nonetheless i'm still gonna subscribe to this thread for entertainment purpose.:thumbup:

Well I wasn't commenting on that aspect of the matter. To be sure...such a thing would be pretty darned "original" to say the least.

Send me a $400 deposit and I will let you make me a cue.
Once the cue is ready, I will send you back your $400 deposit and the amount for the cue.

Now, wouldn't this be a great way to get you cue on time. Miss the deadline by 4 months and you've lost your deposit.

Hmmm, maybe Terry is on to something here.

"Build it (first and well) and they will come."

I wish anybody luck in starting to build cues as it would be a dream come true for me. But I think you need a product before you can sell it. And by that, I don't mean a completed cue. Cuemakers take orders for cues to be built all the time. But these makers have already built and sold cues, so they already have a product. Based on your post, you're trying to sell a product that you are now going to learn to produce? I sincerely wish you well, and hope that 2-3 years from now you're making a great cue, but it would be foolish for me or anybody to put any money down on a product that we (let alone you) know nothing about....................yet.

Good luck,
dave

Ladies and Gentleman,

I have decided to start building cues and will be in the market to buy a lathe. I have always wanted to build my very own cue and also make a living doing this.

I have found some suppliers of ivory and some of the finest woods in this world.

My background:

-pool player for 16 years with extensive knowledge of materials
-played with various cues

That's about it.

I will need a 25% deposit and the wait time will be 11 months. During those 11 months I will be practicing. Just be patient you will get your cue.

Only taking orders for 20 cues...and next year only 15....so give me your money and by the time I get efficient enough everyone's cues will be done.

Send me your designs.

P.S. I am dead serious. I will be very good between now and the end of the 11 months. The deposits would be a good way to build capital till I get all the equipment then I can meet the orders. I will have plenty of time to practice my skills.

This post is in the wrong forum, it should be in ask the cue maker.

Couldn't be serious. Based on your other posts you are simultaneously in the finance industry and the restaurant biz. Now you're trying to get a third job (fourth if you count sharking as a job)

-EDIT-

There should be a period during the build that there isn't a refund because it has gone too far into production.

Like a "No Going Back" phase.

I am in the accounting industry and I am surprised not many cue builders are running their business more structurally.

Also, if these cue builders are really serious, there are bonds and insurance that protects a contractor from a client that backed out of a project. For example you win the bid to build 10 cues for someone, you buy the materials and the costly inlays and jewels and whatever raw materials you need.

Suddenly the client decides he withdraws from the build. Your butt is covered by the bond and insurance to help you recoup the cost of materials. Again, this is if everything is ran legit and your store isn't a message board or cue building is a hobby.

Technically, a cue builder would be considered a carpenter, should possess a contractor's license (if I am not mistaken.)

Just send him back his money.

There is no such thing as giving the forearm and butt to him as his deposit back. An incomplete cue is worthless.

You messed up on the order...plain and simple.

I am in the restaurant business and if we made the wrong meal for a customer...we have to correct it and make it right. There's no giving something to someone as a return on deposit.

Same thread...are you an accountant for a restaurant?

I will send you 100% deposit for a SP, with ring work, if you promise to shove the thing up your arse immediately upon completion...

What a coincidence.

I just started taking orders for building exotic super cars.

I've never built a super car yet but I've been driving for 30 years and have driven many cars.

PM for deposit info but beware there's already a wait list.

;)

Awesome. Where do I send my check and for how much?

First, it was NOT obscene, just asking for some customer service, not sexually oriented as it was NOT considered a sex act, certainly not hateful as I think all trolls are funny, and not threatening at all since I gave you full control on whether or not you want to do it.... see, I have "outs" here.

I'm pretty sure I know what the MODS opinions are on trolls though....so stay tunred....

Kinda harsh don't you think?

Not really.... trolls are use to this type of treatment ;) This is the same guy who brags on how he "sharks" and "cheats" folks at pool. A reall class act. I know I should NOT feed the trolls, but it is late, and figured he needed a little snack or he would go to bed hungry......

This is the most stupid way I've ever seen to get money for nothing!

Extensive knowledge of materials. But not knowing how to clean a shaft! Wow!!!

Yep class act.

Do you think this is true?

A local player have recently found a cue that someone left during a tournament and he is planning to keep it or sell it. He would have to sell it to someone out of town or a pawn shop.

I don't think he should do something as stupid by selling it....it's expensive. I told him to keep it and play with it.

I won't mention the cue, so I can uphold my integrity because the founder, said he want it to be a private matter and he just adores how the cue shoots.

I love it as well but I just don't like the idea of buying this cue because it weighs 19.8 ounces. If it was 19 ounces I would buy it in a heartbeat.

What should he do?

I also found the quotes from my previous post in this thread (above - http://forums.azbilliards.com/showpost.php?p=3614492&postcount=28). The one I quoted here just really rubbed me the wrong way. Speaks a lot on your character dom_poppa.
