Identifying your AZB handle in "real life".

Good reasons include exwives, bails bondsman, the man, the parole officer, the 356 people they owe money to, a lot of reasons. Definitely not my case but many anonymous posters are "somebody" and enjoy just relaxing and being nobody on the web sometimes too. That should be their privilege. The anonymous pool pro's on here seem to enjoy the forum more than those who use their own name and it is widely known who they are.

OK Hu, give it up. Who are they??;)

I like watching people's expressions when they ask what my AZ name is and I say "Corvette". Everyone that has asked says "really?" and smiles. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, lol. :D

Milo I like the sound of Tacoma, kinda like Shenandoah. The linguists say the most beautiful sounding words in the English language are "cellar door." Tacoma is better.
Just wait until you catch the "aroma of tacoma" and you won't be such a fan....

Well many years ago I was interested in starting a nice little import/export business. I had to locate investors in a hurry so I went to some ol' friends in the Mothers And Fathers Italian Association. The association decided to put up some funds but unfortunately my business got busted, . . oops, I mean went busted. It's only been thirty years or so, so I still keep an eye over my shoulder for Vito.

Az Id

When ball bangers in the poolroom ask me my handle on the forum I tell them I'm Gesan! and they always say why are you guessing? and I say I chose gesan to KPM-GESAN - and then they always say I don't care enough to keep guessing - and I say good cause I'm already GESAN and you can't keep gesan if i already am gesan then they always say the 2 words that can get you banned from here 1 of which is "you" the other word which often precedes you - you will have to guess

so you can see its not that i don't want folks to know I'm gesan on this forum or that I'm scared of potential violence as a result of some comments I have made here

its just easier to say I don't have a computer

hope to see you all at the open!!

I'm Gerry, always been Gerry.......in most rooms in the S.E parts of PA I'm not hard to find. I never have worried about being anonymous?....why bother.

I met the TAR guys in Valley Forge a couple months ago... I said, Hi I'm Gerry from AZB.....Justin asked.....whats your name? :)

we all laughed......who would use Gerry as an anonymous name?:)

I saw a guy at Hard Times recently that I've known for years, but we only run into each other every year or so. We talked about the az forum, and I asked him his forum name, and no way would he give it up.

Like he had something invested in keeping it a secret. That's fine, except it makes it easier to imply hostile things about someone when no one knows who you are. Like lobbing grenades from behind a wall, where no one can see you.

I know I keep harping on this point, but it wouldn't be such shark infested waters here if we knew who was posting. And, if someone really wants to know who you are, they'll find out. A little investigative work would be all it would entail.

I think it is all about the "hustle" in pool, and the excitement that comes with keeping a secret, and doing something that is "prohibitive". Kind of like ditching school.

I like it that some guys who may have more to lose, post their real names and even a photo, like Jay Helfert.

I don't mind telling people who I am, if they ask.

Recently, more people have come up to me, "Are you Trigger?" And I reply with a smile like we are automatically friends b/c of AZB, "yes, who are you?!" We *might* say our real names to each other later. lol

Before I posted more, I thought it was really cool when I would go to out-of-state tournaments and a friend or two would say, "hey that's Vegabond over there" or "that guy right there is JCIN." It was like a secret society.

Now I can't hide. They see a chick around pool with a camera and I'm tagged! LOL

I have my user name , which happens to be the same user name I've used on every forum/trading/site/etc I've ever been on since about 1992 , on countless jerseys, shirts and other related related apparel which have been worn at countless meets, get togethers , Tournys and assorted local state and national events.

So yeah , I'm not hiding anything. ;)

I always ask people I meet, if they know about AzB, because it's such a good resource for pool lovers. My handle is never an issue, since I use my real name.

If someone mentions AZB and then asks if you're a member, do you tell them your handle? What if they ask?

If you don't...why not?

I understand all about Internet "anonymity" but this is not an Adult-themed board, so I don't see any harm in doing so. For me...anything I say on here I will happily say to anyone in person.

Just curious as to the attitudes about this from some of the members who choose to remain "undercover".

that is the main point

That is the whole point. If someone makes threats and then bothers to stalk me then I am justified in taking the threats seriously. We have all seen people make threats of great bodily harm or even death threats on this forum. Normally it is meaningless and quickly forgotten. Someone fifty miles away from me made threats on this forum and in PM's. Had he been able to look up my phone number in the phone book would he have rushed over here? Maybe, he was acting totally irrational. My family was just stalked for roughly a year by armed men only a few years ago, not something I take lightly. Sleeping with an AR-15 or 12 gauge by your bed isn't much of a way to live. of course we went to the police, no help there.

Also look at John Schmidt. Had he been anonymous he could still be peacefully enjoying the forum as do several other well known pool players that hide behind a handle. However, this forum has ran off pretty much every pro player that came here and posted under their own name.

Although some refuse to admit it, there are good reasons for not giving a name when none is needed. Everyone on this forum that has been here a few years knows exactly where I stand and the type of person I am. Hu is the name that has earned that reputation and Hu is who is respected, liked, or disliked on this forum. The person makes the name, not the name making the person. What if I created a new account as Robert Long? Everyone would assume that it was a real name and those of you that only respect people with their real names posted would give the new account automatic respect. How silly is that? Hu is the name I am known by in pool halls, Robert Long would be totally fictitious.

Craig,

If you are in public and AZB comes up, do you admit to being a member and ID yourself or not?:grin-square:

Ray

ps. I agree with your anonymity point.

Yes, I certainly do, in fact many members stop by my Pool Room to see if I am as Crazy as I come accross. All I can say, is I try to not disappoint them!! Most comment that in my case anyway, what I type is also what you get!!!!:D

Take Care

I'll share with everyone a goofy little rule I came up with, about twenty years ago, regarding the choice of an online name:

"Never choose a handle you would not want shouted across a crowded room."

<snip>

Ironically, this is exactly how I got my name! I was in a tournament and someone yelled out, "come on Trigger!" I had been looking for a nickname and it was set. :) Of course, Pinocchio helped refine the name for AZB. :woot: :woot:

But here's another question. Why do people not reveal their location? It seems that people who are interested in pool get out at least ocassionally to pool halls or bars, so they are not antisocial creatures. And it would seem to me that knowing where others with common interests would be desirable. It could be helpful to be able to ask questions when traveling, for example, if you knew which AZB members lived in your destination city.

Im antisococial. I can barely stand most of the guys i play with. I deal with it though cause i need someone to play, but id hate to have to talk to them a holes online too

And like superstar said. It depends on if i like you or not. Some people i dont like talking to in person, much less on AZ

Its cool to meet people at tourneys out of town. but as far as in town. Only 1 or 2 people know my screen name. and i like it that way.

i flew under the radar here for along time, then i got sucked into the spot light drug threw the mud.....and here I am. ;)

the name "Fatboy" was given to me by my pool buddy Mike Mitchell way back in the 80's. there is a "Super Fatboy" too, yup it's true, he gave that name to Billy Teeter a very good mutial friend. Billy got the honors a couple years after I did.

I have no problem with identifying myself. Most people just say "oh, I have no idea who you are" and we move on to something else! :p
