Let's Talk About Shane's Gambling Problem . . .

John, i been in the casino business 31 years and i dont know why they dont want to host events any more either. Pool players have a bad rep with the casino people in that out of all the people that the event will draw, very few of them will go off for a huge number.

There are definelty exceptions of course but not enough to justify putting on a major event and tieing up facilitys for a week or more.

I really dont know the concrete answer but i think im close enough to the mark. That plus a few pool players in the past did some shall i say "Questionable" things and that sort of got them branded as no good.

Now as to the main topic of the fellow in questions gambling habits. I was trained by my father who was a big BM from the late 50,s till he retired. He always told me to keep my mouth shut about what players did, win or lose. You never know what youre saying and who it will get back to and you might cause the man a problem indirectly and we lose a customer.

The same thing applies in a casino , when i have a guy on my game going off for a big number and one of the detectives asks me later what did the guy lose or who was he or anything else. My answer is always the same : I dont know. Most of them dont like it but tough shit for them, let em make a beef, lol.

Why do you think they dont want photos taken in casinos ? Beacuse they are afraid some other joint will steal their decorating ideas ? No, its to protect players privacy, and this goes back over 50 years.

I could write a great book on all the stuff i have seen first hand, a lot comical, a lot tragic, but once i hit the back door, its all forgotten about.
Thats how i maintain a semblance of sanity.

When pool use to make TV and was shown over and over at all hours with the Casino name plus an adjective such as 'fabulous' in front of it repeated over and over i think it was a plus for them-pretty cheap advertising.

As the old saying goes, " a fool and their money are soon parted".

Them bright lights and air conditioned casino's cost a fortune to operate daily.

"hope springs eternal" should be the gamblers favorite saying.

Don

Another old saying is ... "Las Vegas---a city build on Hoover Dam and bad math".

Proof in the Pudding

Time will tell as usual. Ones upbringing rises to the top or not in the long :outtahere: Run!!!!!!!!

Most of the talk around these tournaments is that pool players are broke in the first place and can barely afford to get there and pay the entry fees.

If that is the case, why would the Casinos expect to make so much money?

Why do you think they're so broke? Just catch them around SSDI check time......

PS: The players may not have the dough but they attract gambling idiots who do like flies on shit. Who stakes all the "action"?

I would not say they are chomping at the bit to host pool tournaments. Pool players might like to gamble and not be great at casino games (who is) but as a group they don't have a lot of money to lose and no credit cards to max out, no real estate to double mortgage to finance a $100,000 gambling bender.

It would be awesome if casinos were lining up to host events and add money but it doesn't seem to be the case at all.

They don't want to add money John. They subtract plenty of it though during these events. If use of the facility is all they are asked for they are generally plenty game to host responsible organizations. Just the alcohol sales at some of these events will more than pay the rent.

gambling stories are interesting

I like the story in Jay's book about pool players winning so much at the craps tables they had to close it down.........or was that in Jay's book?

Grady had something in his book about the Casinos saying the Pool Playing Craps players were too good. He may have used the word 'sophisticated' ahahaha. If they did say that which i doubt, They were surely stroking him.

Yes, for sure.

Crap games dont get shut down because players are winning too much, how the hell are they going to recoup anything by shutting down ?

And seeing that it was the Stardust which was a notorious sweat house, i really cant see them shutting it down, lol.

Unless you are counting cards, and counting to 6 decks or more you could still lose, the rest of the games like craps are, to borrow a phrase from Grady, fraught with danger.

A wise man (NOT a "wise guy", though he knew plenty of them) who grew up on the mean streets of Long Beach, N.Y. once told me; "Gambling is a business. If you're not in the business, don't do it."

Playing pool well is Shane's business. It's his money, but I'd sure suggest he stick to business.

Considering how Shane takes care of himself (not drinking, not smoking, working out, etc.), I would be surprised if he consistently goes off on casino games.

I believe Grady was more inclined to use the term "fraught with peril." Thanks for the reminiscence, though, for it brings back some good times.

Hi Eric,

How did you see it all? Did you have a sophisticated camera system which was in each hotel room so you would see it all, or in every showroom?

What if you were at Caesar's and something was happening at the Nugget, how did you see it all at both places. I mean you're a big guy, but you don't span city blocks.

Get back with me on that please, thanks my friend.

QUOTE=Fatboy;4237614]I seen it all living for 23 years in Vegas, i'll leave it at that......[/QUOTE]

Again. it is the role of the commentator to discuss issues pertinent to the players performance. They are often uncomfortable doing so, but it is their responsibility to do so.

Really? No thanks.

For some reason we didn't hear this play-by-play...

"Batting fourth, Mickey Mantle, but first let me tell you about last night."

I was quite surprised to hear Jay make those comments.

What a guy does with him money is NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS.

SO what if Shane used to play alot of craps. IT's HIS MONEY

Absolutely. Reminds me of many years ago when Michael Jordan was in (I think) Atlantic City and betting with $500 chips and there was this article in the paper that indicated he must have a terrible gambling habit to be betting so big. $500 chips to Michael would have equated to betting dollars to the idiot that wrote the piece. As you said ... "IT's HIS MONEY", so everyone should just F off!

I think this really is the correct answer, if such a thing exists.

To my mind, and in a perfect world, it prob would have sufficed for a commentator to say, if they were so inclined, that Shane was up pretty late and it may be affecting his performance.

best,
brian kc

Big difference though.
Jordan could lose 100k per day the rest of his life and still not be busted when he dies.
SVB could maybe lose 100k if he has it and he may jump off a bridge. Never know.

Shane makes real good money and has investments, he is actually one of the smarter ones.

If he want to gamble that is his choice. It's funny they never bring up the guy who is snorting more then that ever night.

It's none of anyone's business.
