"Madison" Bob Griffin Failure to honor his commitments to a client

Jeesh

If you want the cues, pay the $25 extra per cue, it's not like it will break you.
My guess is that it would take you much longer to get the deposit back, than to pay the extra $25 and get the cues. Maybe he had raw materials go up on him, or whatever.

All I know, is that pissing off a cuemaker is kind of like doing it to Mother Nature, it doesn't have good results. Take the high road, and consider it a lesson learned.

I have also met with some difficulty getting work out of their shop. For months I tried to get someone to just answer the phone. Finally I got Bob's son Bobby to answer the phone. I told them that I needed to get some shafts made for a cue I already owned and possibly a refinish. He was very helpfull on the phone and implied that the work would only take a few weeks to complete. He told me to email all the details and he would reply with pricing and an "estimated" time frame for completetion. The next day I emailed some pics of my cue showing the ringwork that would be needed and the details of the work I was considering. Let's just say that Im glad I didnt box up my cue and send it off immediately. after the original conversation I called and emailed several times BUT I still have received NO RESPONSE !!! NOTHING !!

It's a shame too because my MB plays jam up, but the shaft is way to small, around 12.25. I have just retired the cue until I can decide what to do. I've considered other options but I really wanted to get the shafts from the man himself. I know his health has not been good but jeez . I would prefer them to just say "look I can't do it right now", rather than get the runaround

BTW Bobby the son said he is pretty much doing all the work and running the shop... whatever that means

Snapshot,

I want you to understand that this goes beyond 75.00....your right it's not about the money....It's about who I choose to give my business to...it's about getting the run around, it's about being insulted, and it's about dishonesty....thats why I wanted to cancel the deal....Now if you read the original post closely at the bottom....I chose to put my ego aside and decided to pay Bob the 375.00 + shipping for 2 cues as long as he ships them to Dave Hughes ( a long time customer of Bobs ) COD......this email was sent on 2/20/08...I havent got a response to my email, nor will he answer his phone...

I Think Bob Not Only Sold His Cnc But All His Stuff I Dont He Make A Cue If His Life Depended On It No Machines Anymore.

Dale I hope you get this resolved in a positive way. All of my dealings with Dale have been positive transactions. I have personally got to know Dale in the past year thru here and over the phone. I consider Dale a man of his word and a true friend. Good luck!

madison bob

im sorry to hear about the problem with your cue. i on the other hand had an excellent experience with bob. i sent him a shaft to repair. it was a shaft that i was supposed to fix for someone, but i had messed it up. about 4 days later, i recieved a package, and when i opened it, there was a brand new madison bob shaft in there. along with the shaft there was a note that said "no charge".
thanks again bob,
joey

Most

craftsmen (or artist) are what they are because that is what they are good at, and most are not also good at business. That's why many wives/girlfriends/sons/other family members are handling the 'office' part for them. Most cuemakers don't want to be bothered with it.

If you got more than you bargained for (metaphorically speaking), it is because you did not research this cuemaker enough before having him make you a cue or 3.

(Kind of like a company that makes great products, but has a lousy customer service department).

Jeesh, give the man a little time.
He was just kicked in the groin by another maker.
I'm sorry but as a cuemaker or someone in the same trade, we shouldn't kick someone while he's down.

Seems to me that he has plenty of time to type a long, poorly written response. He surely could take the time to shoot Dale a PM or email......

Russ.....

Russ, we don't know 10% of what went on with Bob and Lee before.

I dunno when Bob got to read these threads either.
I do hope he PM's or calls Dale of course.

I agree with this statement to be honest. the 25 of each cue will not break him indeed, but the commitment of what the cuemaker said is one of the most important things to me when I look up for a cuemaker, he says something, stick up on it. Changing his words would just make me think he can change alot of things! Thats how I see it :)

Damn drama again on here. The only thing i have to say is that anybody selling a product should back it up or deliver it on time,i mean if it takes 3 months to build a cue tell the guy alittle longer for security.I hope you get you deposit back Dale, its not right what happened to you and you did no wrong here so i can see why your pissed,i wouldnt give him a dime more either based on the way he handles business and treated you.

See post #8 on "madisonbob untrusting client snowmon34" thread!!!!!
I suppose this thread will be longer than the first on this subject!

Didn't your mother ever teach you any manners? You should have your mouth washed out with soap. Bad rep to you.

Well, I have read both sides of the story and everything seems crystal clear to me, and I believe a court would also have no problem seeing things the same way. The other threads on this are below.

First Mr Griffin, you agreed to $1050 as the final price, with $525 down. He would not have sent you the large sum of $525 and shortchanged you by a whopping sum of $37.50. It just doesn't make sense. And you say he was supposed to send $562.50 but you did not mention it to him until 8 months later? Again, it just does not make sense. If the correct amount was $562.50 but you were going to go ahead and accept the $525 as downpayment, you would at least mentioned it to him that he had failed to send the full half and that the remaining balance would be higher. You did not do that because he sent you the agreed to correct amount to begin with.

Second, by your own words Mr Griffin, you told him 2-6 months for completion. It has been 8 months. "Cuemaker time" is great if the customer is willing to accept it, but if not you need to honor the deal in the timeframe that was estimated or give him his money back if requested. The courts see it the same way. I have on videotape the Peoples Court episode where a cuemaker was sued for this exact same thing, taking longer to complete the cues than the customer was told. The cuemaker used "cuemakers time" as a defense. He lost. The court ruled that there is no excuse for not delivering the cue/s at or at least close to the time frame that was estimated. It does not matter what the reasons are for the delay, health or otherwise. Yes that sucks for you, but ultimately it is NOT THE CUSTOMERS PROBLEM and it is not right to make him pay for YOUR problem.

Third, after the 6 months came and went he was doing you a favor by only asking for pictures to be sent as proof the cues were done. He could have rightfully just asked for his money back then but he stuck with you for several more months. You should have bent over backwords to accomodate him, because he was more than patient with you when you failed to honor you side of the bargain.

Fourth, you should be offering him a discount, not trying to weasel more money from him. You dropped the ball, and even if the reason was beyond your control, it certainly was not the customers fault.

Fifth, you keep saying that you do not give deposits back. That is only legal if you live up to your end of the bargain, including the delivery time. You cannot keep someones deposit if you never finish the cue, or if you finish it much after the time which was promised. He has every right to ask for and to get his money back.

Sixth, you feel that he should be paying you a commission for your trouble in having to sell the cues so that you can give him his money back after you failed to meet the delivery deadline by several months. Are you kidding me? Refer back to point number 4.

Seventh, you keep talking about how you have worked so hard to build your reputation over 15 years, but you sure seem willing to throw it away very quickly by the way that you have chosen to handle the situation. Count me in as someone that will not be doing any business with you, and I am sure that I am not the only one.

Mr Griffin, give the man back his money, and immediately, if that is what he wants at this point. If he is willing to work out another agreement, it is you, not him, that should be bending over backwards to make the necessary concessions.
