Big Hurt,

Again, someone who probably knows nothing in regards to kicking. Like I said, you would have to watch David play to make the assumptions that some of us are making. Not just watch ESPN when pool is on and say "hey theres that Magician guy, boy he sure can play". I've seen them both play in person various times, in person, nontheless . Again, I will say David is up there. Didn't say he was better but he's up there. Furthermore, a guy like you with such a limited perspective and obviously a limited vocabulary and reasoning skills; this will be the last time I address you in any manner. Wow, I'm suprised I even responded to an idiot like big hurt, someone save me!

Clint, you and Ironman should probably "edit" your posts and remove the quoted portion. Thebighurt may well be a banned man posting after that contribution to the thread. I am sorry you had to read it. :(

Go play a top 3 cushion player some 9-ball if you don't believe me. You cannot hook them. I...They don't just hit the ball, they hit it exactly where they want to hit it, with the right speed to get exactly the result they want to... :-)
There is a shot very similar to this in the carom forum.

3c players blow us away when it comes to kicking, though i believe the equipment is great factor.

One thing though, Buddy never beat David for the cash! Another thing most people don't know, is that David beat Buddy before on the bar table and later down the road beat him 2 sets: one of the bar table and one on the big track!

I wondered if this would come up. Davids stakehorse came through SE Missouri asking if anyone wanted to play his player. I staked a friend playing the kid he had with him. He later asked if anyone would play high dollar pool as he had Matlock with him. This would have been around 92 or so and most had heard of Matlock at that time. Noone wanted that kind of action and passed. The stakehorse said thats allright as he was sleeping in his RV after just playing Buddy and beating him on the barbox for like $15,000. After he wins on the box Buddy wanted to play on the 9 footer and gets beat again for another $10,000 if the story was true. I cant remember his stakers name but he was from Ok and heavy set.

Yes, it is true, i'm not sure of the financials but they played the two sets.. David has beaten Buddy everytime they played; that I know of. David played Buddy a two set session. One on the bar table and then on the 9 foot. Tell me of others who have done this? 've never heard of sigel, parica, reyes, mccready, or others step and play Buddy in this manner. I happen to think that Buddy is the overall best american player ever, but David would play and beat him. Thats what i'm saying ,nobody seems to remember these things or never heard of it. David is right up there any of the top american players but never gets the recognition the others gets, because he is rather meek and he hates tournaments. The last IPT showed what he can do when motivated. I'm still not sure if he was playing on all 8 cylinders at that time; he only prepared for that a few months out, just think he if really had alot of time to work on his game. If that tournament would have kept going, I really believe that the whole world would have had a brand new respect and knowledge of David. BTW -I believe the stakehorse at that time was Bill Duggan.

That Stakehorse was probably a guy called Vernon. I cna't remember his last name, but, he ran with David quite a bit.

Bill was one of his stakehorses at one time. For the longest BIll had an offer to anyone on the box with the big ball for $50,000. No telling how many sets he may have gone for. He would put the money out there.

Bill though is not a big guy.

SVB vs BH in the 1970's. Buddy Hall has the nutz in that game and I think Jay would agree.

Are you talking about stature? I know Bill isn't a big guy. Maybe, 5'6. Last time I saw him he was wearing a maroon members only jacket (classic) that was 2 years ago.

Efren is "The Man" period. I will never be convinced that David Matlock and every top 3 cushion player knows more about kicking, but do respect everyone else's opinion on the subject. This will be my last post in defense of the great Reyes as we are getting off topic.

Live long "Bata" and may every roll go your way!!!

Efren is the MAN. No doubt about it. You just have to get to know these players as people to understand what they really know and where they come from and how they acquired their knowledge and experience.

When you do then they lose the luster of being untouchable but gain a ton more respect when you find out how much they went through to attain world class skills.

Players like David and Efren put in a lot of time studying the game in ways that a lot of players don't. And it is reflected in the level of their game. David Matlock is one of those special players. So is Efren. So are Buddy Hall and Mike Sigel and Keith McCready and several others. All of them champions who bested all comers in their time.

Efren has the distinction of coming into tournament prominence in his older years when a lot of players in his age group have quit playing for the most part. In the mid 80s to the latter part of the 90s though he didn't win a lot of tournaments. Sigel, Hall, Varner, Strickland and others owned Efren in tournaments and Hall owned him when it came to gambling. In later years though it seems as if Efren has somehow gotten better while the others have faded from the scene. I think it's because Efren never stops playing and being in action. But I digress, my point is that there are other people who play(ed) as well, know as much and on any given day can outplay any other living human being. It's unfair to them to place Efren above them when they have accomplished as much as he has in their own right.

David Matlock is one of the greatest players alive. No doubt about it.

I am sure that even today Matlock has backers who will stake him in heads up action with whomever wants to get in the box.

Start a list now of players with WILLING backers who want to tangle with Matlock on the barbox for any significant amount?

Efren?

This is a very entertaining thread to say the least. I have no leg to stand on as to which one is/was "the best" but from reading this thread they probably all fall into the same catagory as every other pool player.

They have "all" been beat...However as a typical pool player would do they will "qualify" the beat by saying they wern't at thier best or the money was not big enough etc. etc.

Fact of the matter is that I can only think of 1 player that has ever been at his "best" in a recorded and verified event and that is not Efren Reyes...but it is Earl Strickland when he ran out the set. IMO unless you shoot a 1000 you could always say you were not at your best.

I am not taking anything away from any of these players...I would give my left nut to play as well as any of them...I often wonder how they can maintain that level of play for such a long period

However good they are though...they don't get to use the "excuse" of I was not at my "best" for that game... Frankly I (as well as MANY others I expect) have had shooting star experiences where you broke and ran a rack or two or three and thought to yourself that you have figured it out and may never miss again...for that few racks you were at your "best" and could have beaten any one of those players listed above...(if only you could have continued to play "your best").....Does that mean I get to use the "excuse" I was not at my best when I get beat by someone???

The truth is they (all three) are considered the "Best" along with some others that could stand on that pedestal...

Another truth is that Buddy is the only one of those three that I would consider standing on both the bar box pedastal AND the 9' pedastal as being the best...

I expect that IF Efren and Earl chose to play bar box they would also be able to stand on that pedastal with the group considered as being the best...

The real truth is that Efren is the only one (that I know of) that can stand on the "most" pedastals as being in the group of the best.

Based on this thread though I can say that I would have loved to have seen Matlock play...Unfortunatly I never got the chance...He sounds phenominal

If we had a reading comprehension test on this website, half of the members would fail. The best in the tournament doesn't always win. However, if you claim to be the best bar table player in the world for a number of years you should have a tournament championship (this means one) to show for it. And Ive never heard Jason Kirkwood claim to be the best in the world...so bad comparison. And competent players are capable of beating champions in a tournament. Sorry, but I think you overlooked something that is kind of funny. The reason they are called (clear my throat) champions is because they have won a.....CHAMPIONSHIP. So they had to win at some point, either once or numerous times. And in that tournament, they didn't get beat (twice in some instances) by anyone competent or great.
Sorry for butting in, but if most pool legends themselves say Matlock was the best/or one of the best bar box players ever why does it matter if he won major tourneys or not? There are tourney players and money players. If Michael Jordan says Joe Blow from the block was the best player ever, but Joe Blow never played pro I would still take Jordan's word for it.

Since you asked,,,,,,,,,Dan Louie, did exactly that in the late 70s in Baton Rouge and then in Jackson, MS 2-3 days later. And,,,,,,,yes,,,,,,,I was there for both.

David is a class act

 Not only one of the all time greatest money players, David Matlock is a class act, soft spoken, super nice individual who has had an awfully tough life surviving in the super tough world of pool. Anyone who has anything bad to say about David obviously never met him.

Didn't Louie get weight from Buddy. I always heard he got the 7 or something like that.
