We are now mid way between last year and the next Mosconi Cup. This thread has had a revival of interest. So we now have a situation where the five most popular picks are
1) Shane van Boening (in 21 team selections)
2) Johnny Archer (18)
3) Corey Dueul (17)
4) Rodney Morris (14)
5) Dennis Hatch (14)

Outside the team
Steve Moore (13)
John Schmidt Gabe Owen Mike Davis (all on 9)
Earl (5)
plus another 12 nominations with 3 or less

Only Poolwiz99 matched with the first five names

You, my friend, have way too much time on your hands!!!:)

Team should be the following:

Shane VanBoening
Corey Deuel
John Schmit
Gabe Owen
Dennis Hatch
Mike Davis

Young guys who are hungry and can flat out play 9 ball.

mosconi team 2009

earl strickland has to be in the mosconi cup team until he retires, it just would not be the same without him! earl puts arses on seats, and viewers on tv...

Best Team

1)Johnny Archer
2)Shane Van Boening
3)Rodney Morris
4)Stevie Moore
5)Gabe Owen.../Schmidt

I think that Gabe and Schmidty are interchangeable at this point. I might lean to Gabe because he's in action all the time I see him. I think this team provides a perfect balance of experienced Mosconi Cup members (Rodney and Archer) huge young talent, (Shane) and players who are playing at the top of their game and willing to prove themselves (Stevie and Gabe). There's no doubt in my mind that these guys are the best picks for our team.
Many people would argue Corey but If I were picking our team I wouldn't want to gamble on whether Corey is gonna have the desire to play his heart out for team USA. He hasn't seemed very interested in pool lately and was threatened to go 2 and out in the last Seminole Pro Tour. I think we need a blend of guys who are going to play their assess off and want to win.. IMHO there's no better group than these guys right here...

The WINING TEAM

Coach; Buddy Hall
Buddy will bring it all as a coach. Knowledge, Experience, Decision Making, etc. I mean the list goes on with this guy.

Team USA;
1. Dennis Hatch
2. Shane Van Boening
3. Corey Deuel
4. John Schmidt
5. Stevie Moore

Experience in the Mosconi Cup shouldn't really be a factor to which people base their choices on when they choose a player, nor should ratings or crowd pleasers.... All the players I chose are very PROFESSIONAL players and will handle themselves accordingly in any event at which they attend. I honestly believe this line up would give USA the best chance to be able to battle with Europe.... Though I would like to see a Hatch/Strickland scotch doubles vs ANYONE IN THE WORLD, I don't feel that Strickland gives us the %100 playing field we need to win this year. We dominated for such a long time in the Mosconi Cup and we need to send a message to Europe and other countries that we still have players here in America!!! Pool is dying in our country and it really is discouraging for young players like myself watch so many waste away what talent they have by giving up or going down other paths and throwing it all away. We need this win to keep spirits high in young players and give them something to look forward too.

Great team pick there, porcospino.......Has to be the strongest team i hae seen yet.........

Based on who's playing the best right now:
Johnny, Rodney, Shane, Schmitty and Stevie Moore. Dennis Hatch is a wild card. I too wish there were six. A little different chemistry might be a good thing for Team USA.

Are you in the running to be the team captain?

I'd love to do it but no one has asked. I think we can put together a winning team. I like Archer (team leader who everyone respects), Shane (a proven winner), John Schmidt (capable of great pool), Hatch (a little fire in his tank), and possibly Corey (can play under pressure), Stevie Moore (he's proved himself) or Charley Bryant (he has the X factor). Tough to pick only five players. I liked it better when we had six on a side. From the above seven, I believe we can mold a winning team. I would want a sixth player as an alternate and a practice partner. Kind of like what they do on the Davis Cup squads.

There seemed to be no team chemistry at all last year. The team needs a new captain. Nothing against Nick Varner who I really like, but just like professional sports, the coach is usually the 1st to go when things aren't going well. Who are the decision makers for players and the team captain? I know tournament stats have an influence, but not all of last year's players had big tournament finishes.

Archer
Svb
Owen
Morris
Nevel

Nevel needs to be playing pool not cooking hamburgers. Also like moore, Hatch, corey and others for the fifth spot but Nevel offers a great all around package.

Look, nothing against Larry... I think Larry has an awesome game, explosive even, but we are going to be pitting our boys against the crim della crim here; Souquet, Immonen, Peach, Appleton.... These guys have conquered LARGE fields of Champions, not just Tour Stops her and there. MAJOR EVENTS!!!! When I say Major I mean the playing field is 95%-100% PROFESSIONAL. Not some tour stop running through GA,TN, NC, or FL where just any banger can pay his due and get in.

I love watching Johnny play and I like Rodney's game as well. Maybe it's time to ask the veterans to step down and give some new blood a chance to represent.

If I were to make a swap out on my line up;

Buddy Hall (Coach)

1. Boening (Captain)
2. Hatch
3. Deuel <----- It would be here. If Corey's desire to play isn't there, I mean if he is asked and he hesitates for a millisecond to answer, Johnny or Rodney should slide into this spot, but not as captain.
4. Schmidt
5. Moore

If any of these guys are asked and they hesitate or have to think about it they shouldn't be allowed to play. I believe playing in the Mosconi Cup is a PRIVILEGE, an honor even just to be asked to represent the US with all eyes of the world watching. They should spring to the opportunity not just agree!!!!!

I agree America can put together a good team and am looking forward to going.

I believe I would take

Shane
Hatch
Archer
Morris
Moore -- plays excellent and would be hungry.

:embarrassed2:Sorry about the corniness. Playing hours of PLO will do that to me. God knows I hate that game but I am trying to learn it.

The Europe team will be Ralf, Mika, Darren, then a combination of Neils, Van den Berg, Thorsten, Majid, unless someone else has a spectacular couple of tournaments.

The USA have a multitude of players who can compete here, it is short race 9 ball, anything can happen.

I would imagine Europe will be favourites whoever the USA field, but I would not like to gamble my house on it. That to me is why the Mosconi cup is so good to watch.

My USA team would be SVB, Hatch, Moore, Corey, and John. All great players, big tournament winners, and very good under pressure.

Corey Deuel
John Schmidt
Johnny Archer
Dennis Hatch
SVB

I think this is the best possible team for the USA...assuming we want to WIN. Every one of those guys plays jam up pool every time they step to the table.

Corey's desire is questionable, as mentioned before. If he wants to play, few in the world can equal his ability; it just seems his love for the game has been burned out by years of placing at the top of the field, and still not getting rich for his talent.

Johnny Archer looks to be one of the best players in the world for years to come, after having been on top for 20 years or more...simply amazing.

Dennis Hatch, SVB, and John Schmidt NEVER miss makeable shots, or routine position.

If we were to choose a non-playing captain, I would go with Buddy Hall...

I don't care WHO Europe throws out there, this team would bring home the cheese...

(And Steve Moore would be my alternate.)

Here's the winning combination in need of a good team captain. The SHAMWOW team.

Shane Van Boening
JoHn Schmidt
Johnny Archer
Rodney Morris
With
COrey Deuel
Wins the match

hi

i wish i could pick the team. i know i could pick 5 guys who play great and like each other. thats a big factor team chemistry.

i have little chance of making the team because every year when i get invited to the world championships i decline because of the travel and small money etc.
these same people are the ones who put on the mosconi cup .they are not going to invite me ever.

its a shame because we are losing the cup because of earls bad play, antics ,and the way he ruins the chemistry of team.

if i do get picked i will practice for a week straight and be ready to rep the usa .

they also pick johnny, earl and rodney every year no matter what so only 2 spots are available. my team would be johnny, rodney, gabe, corey and me.

we all golf togetrher and like each other. their would be chemistry. we might lose, we might win but we would all have fun and get along which is something that never happens with earl on the team.
