Mr Varney a refund please.

The only opinion i have on this matter is that a cuemaker should give a somewhat reliable time for the cue to be done,if you think it will take 6 months then say 8 or perhaps 9 and if it get it in 6 then i will be happier since i recieved it earlier. If you tell me 3 months and its 9 months later and i dont have my cue i would be pissed,if there is something serious going on personally i would take that into account and have some compassion of course.I think this matter was resolved well in the fact that poolplayer is getting his money back and someone is getting a hell of a deal. :)

awesome

No arguement from me, either. You have a rock solid point, just not one that involves me. I don't depend on cues for income, so there's no need for me to feel pressured. If I never sold a cue, i'd still build them. I don't build for customers, I build for my own sanity & enjoyment, then accept compensation for my materials & a little extra in trade for the finished product. If the buyer gets tired of waiting then i'll sell the cue to somebody else, no big deal, no hurt feelings, nobody lost money. My family eats whether I sell a cue or not. Cues have absolutely no place in my bills or groceries.

I am prior military & went to war once at the same time as my wife, who is also military. It was a very tough situation for everybody. Luckily we both made it home safe. So we decided one of us would get out of the military & devote themselves to the kids, so they would always have a stable home with a parent no matter what was going on. I'm the parent, Mr. Mom. So cuemaking for me is a release, a getaway from the world, a place I can be a man & work with my hands. But my number one priority is my kids. My wife is at war again, and I am home giving my kids stability & hugging them when they cry for their mommy. Believe me, for a former soldier it is a tough life, but neccesary & rewarding. So if I bust my time limit on a cue, so be it. It's nothing but a wooden toy for grown ups. I deal with children all day everyday, and don't want to deal with whining grown ups, too. They can find another builder. Don't burst my little bubble of fun over a cue. Trust me, the time I spent building that cue means more to me than the finished product will ever mean to anybody else!!!! Might be a bit too personal & deep for a public forum. But it's my position in the cuemaking world. I keep very little secrets, especially from somebody who is spending money on very expensive toys.

This was good, thanks for sharing...

this is an odd trade were all in. funny ppl. most like things there ways. same goes for cuemakers. some inflate the wait time to drive the price of their cues up.

maybe ill get one used maybe i wont.

also alot of cuemakers have real jobs

Tap, Tap, Tap....:) most cuemakers have full time job, half for family, and their part time hobby.

Exactly... I go over to visit Cory Barnhart all the time. He builds houses for a living, and builds cues for the relaxation and joy of the wood-working. It is an expensive hobby, though. Cory has about $150k of equipment in his shop for cue-building. You would have to build a ton of cues just to break even...I doubt that many cuemakers ever do. Also, considering his full-time work, he often puts in 16-18 hour days...again, as Qbuilder said, for the pleasure, not the money.

Cuemakers not meeting estimated delivery dates are as predictable as death and taxes.

It's the norm and not the exception. There are a few exceptions to the rule.

The makers which are customer service orientated are pro-active with communication....

Hey Adam,

Wasn't it you that almost had to fly to Alaska to get either a cue or a refund from a very famous cue maker? I seem to remember a cue he made that was supposedly the highest dollar selling cue of all time:D :D

We have jobs to support the hobby.
Sometimes I wonder about making knives for a hobby instead.

LOL, that's the first time I got a dose of "cuemaker time".

Hopefully all involved learned from the experience, I know I sure did:)

i wouldn't call this whining at all. i've done my time in the sand box myself so i know where you're comming from when you compair it to the rest of the world it's pretty small stuff. but its still my cash

Oh, please don't misunderstand me. I never meant to insinuate that you were whining. You payed cash up front, and wanted a refund when the deal never went as agreed. That is your right & your decision to make, and 100% justifiable. My whining comment was regarding people that whine & moan without ever spending a dime, notably the people who wait for a cue from me but have never paid a thing, but still try to pressure me or get pushy. It does not bother me, rather I find it humorous. The few that I do allow to put money down have something to gripe about if I bust my time, but as soon as they get fussy my immediate reply is offering a refund.

I wonder how my cue is coming along.

now thats funny, Eric is a great guy.

the same everywhere

In reply to the posts from cue makers considering, I suspect totally tongue in cheek, making something else; it is all a lot of sugar for a dime. A friend made the best custom knives in the world. He made about the same making knives as he did at his day job of ironworking in a petro-chem plant. He had a long enough waiting list that he could and had made a living making knives full time but that took all of the pleasure out of making knives.

I built custom 1911's myself. Same thing, very moderate dollars for a lot of work and even worse, the fed's breathing down your neck all the time!! Cue sticks have more appeal but I'll probably be shutting down the shop permanently as soon as current work is completed. Might make a few when I am in the mood and offer them for sale after completion. Going back to what I truly enjoyed, outdoor photography, and converting the images into other things to try to make a buck. Think I'll cut up some of my exotic wood stock into wildlife calls too. I'll have to see how these things play out.

What I think is funny is when a player gives you a repair and then has no money to pay for it??? I had one player finally pay for a tip and ferrule after 2 years of waiting for the money. Go figure?
