Hello all, I've been lurking for a few months while searching for a used table. I finally bought one a week ago and it will be installed tomorrow, I can't wait! It's a Presidential, I assume it's a discontinued model since it doesn't show up on there website and is about 5 years old.

I'm not much of a player, although I love to play. I'm fairly good at geometry and physics so that should make it easier to learn, I hope; so, many simplistic questions may follow, especially since I've read through some older threads and don't even understand the lingo yet.

Anyway, I'm off to finish steam cleaning my carpet and getting the area ready for the install. Any and all advise regarding accessories / etc is much appreciated.

It's a pleasure to have you join us. Nothing like having a table at home. As you know there's going to be a variety of answers for any questions you might have. So ask away. Welcome.

Cool another Coloradan, I think we must be just behind Texas now for members:grin-square:. The quickest way to improve your game is to limit the time you spend on this ridiculously addictive forum. A quality set of balls(Super pro or Centennials)is a good way to start out and a cue that you like enough to get used to. Nothing very expensive until you know what you want.

Welcome to the forum. Good luck with your table. Don't act like a newbie, for if you love pool, you're already one of us.

Thanks for the welcome guys. My basement is ready, as am I. I figured the first thing I would look into would be a cue tip replacement kit, as all five cues appear to need new tips (I was thinking about something like this), and then, a new set of Aramith balls, with a six dot cue ball (any recommendations?).

As far as cues are concerned, my biggest question is in regards to cue weight, what is it based on? what weight do most people use for a standard cue and why? what do most people use for a break cue and why? etc...

Well the pool table is installed, the install didn't go so well. They found the frame hard to level, I'd say it took them an extra 1-1/2 hours, the previous installers used bondo to join the slate joints and drilled an extra hole in each piece of slate, the installer said probably because they were having the same type of problems and didn't want to take the time to get it right. But after all is said and done the table looks, and more importantly plays great! I have now discovered I am the worst pool table in the history of pool.

I am by no means a cue tech but that tip replacement kit is comprised (mostly) of the items I use too. Couple things I've learned is to tape up the shaft and ferrule ( I use blue painters tape) before you do anything after cutting the old tip off. Be sure to take plenty of time, it's not a race. I do use a different glue too, I get Locktite Gel (learned from others on this forum) . I've been doing my own tip replacement for a couple years now and have never had a problem with them coming off. Oh yeah, and welcome to the forum from another long time lurker and short time poster. Hope you get as much enjoyment and helpful information as I have. If you have any question, feel free to pm me, I may not be of any help but I'll sure share what I've learned through trial and error.

Welcome

Welcome to the forum. I see you are right up the highway from me. Another Coloradan. Your about to get an education and maybe an addiction too!!

Welcome. This is a good place to learn about anything that has to do with pool.

I"m just an amateur tip replacement guy but I Think that kit wastes some money. I think I'd recommend buying from Muellers.. it's closer to you and I'd buy items E and F separately and leave the burnisher etc alone. I'd go to Lowes or something a get some Loctite Super Gel Super Glue. I'd recommend a tip shaper like a Willard http://www.poolndarts.com/index.cfm...ECC&Fuseaction=Catalog.Product&productID=6969
for $5.95 and a piece of undyed leather for burnishing the tip. Both are easy to take with you when you go to the ph. (pool hall) I learned to trim the edges of the tip with a utility knife. Use tape on the ferrule and shaft to avoid damage.

Get some fine to very fine sandpaper for the shaft and a piece of undyed leather to burnish the shaft after using 1000 grit or 1500 grit. Usually a few swipes with a slightly dampened Mr. Clean Magic Eraser will get rid of all the chalk residue and/or dirt on the shaft. It's about the only thing that will easily do that job and not damage the shaft. It will leave a few "hairs" on the shaft but a few swipes with 800 grit followed by the 1000 and 1500 grit will do the rest. Then burnish with leather. No chemicals needed to get the shaft slick.

As far as tips go.. you'll have to experiment to determine what hardness and type of tip you like. I prefer the hard to extra hard tips as they resonate the feeling of the impact with the tip on the cueball (cb) clear back to your back hand.... but that's just me. Others like the feel of softer tips. If you have friends that have some experience they'll let you use their cue maybe to feel the difference.

I cannot over-empathize the need for lessons before bad habits are picked up and grooved. Check in your area. Others on the forum will help guide you to someone who can get you going on the right foot (placement of the feet is very important :groucho: ).

There's more to learn that you could ever imagine so use the search function shown at the top of the screen. There's a wealth of knowledge available here.

Stroke smooth and slow and easy. Follow through until the tip touches the table in front of where the cb was and don't get up until the ball stops rolling. Have fun!

What he said........ hay jim you still lovin' my sugartree?

Welcome to the asylum. If you can, perhaps you'll post a pic or two of your table.

As far as cues go, check out the wanted/for sale section of the forum.

As far as advise goes, you'll get it here in spades. But word to the wise, watch out for the following characters:

cocobollo cowboy: he's a tad goofy
watchez: don't bet him on anything, he has crystal balls
jay helfert: claims he gave the pope the last 5, but I think he's lying
Shooting Arts: claims he built the golden gate bridge with a ball peen hammer
and a lathe
The420Trooper: don't believe anything he posts after 1 pm

Ok, well that's all the wisdom I can offer at the moment. Spread your wings and fly grasshopper!

Welcome!

There are some really great and knowledgeable players on this forum.

I am not much of either, -- but I am getting better. I am really here for the love of the game.

Thanks for all the advice and welcomes. I'm attaching a few shot of the table, the room is far from done tho.
