Ginacue: Master of Marketing

Great idea other than just matches. too bad he didn't show us how he made a few things. He did devluge a few secrets- the thought of forward balance cues, ebony fronts, the white and brown shafts, snakewood characterists. didn't like his comments on the players cues he so seldom makes. He could learn from Danny Janes and be less like Bill Stroud. Why is it all about the cash. I'd like to hear Paul Motteys side,Bill Schick's, and Richard blacks side. I would like to see Tad Kohara's shop, I think more famous for making players cues. Tad tips. Doesn't Andy Gilbert have a rep for players cues. Ernies own words 1 pro player- now thats a mouthfull. There are no secrets in cuemaking in this day and age. Thanks thanks and thanks a very nice custom shop. But like he said he's lazy and wants the machine to do all the work- I couldn't believe he compared himself to George B or Gus Szamboti- players cues. I couldn't help but laugh at how many times he wanted to scratch his nuts. did you guys catch all gunsmith tooling. mark

Agree. He's certainly not known for making great playing cues and is not in the same league as Gus Szamboti when it comes to playability. He makes cues that people put in trophy cases and the majority rarely hit a ball. The Ginas that I've owned had a slightly dead hit.

It's obvious from the 90-minute infomercial that he is very relaxed on camera and probably didn't know the camera setup had his crotch center frame.

This video should be very good for his sales.

I'm sure he will be excited to know you were checking out his package. LOL

That's the most impressive group of machines i've ever seen to build cues with. I hate to think how much it would cost to order all that equipment brand new and have it set up!

Awsome

Justin, I just want to thank you for the privilege of seeing your exceptional work. Keep it up and I will look forward to your next interview with a master! Kent

Well James, many of the machines he designed and built himself, so they can't be ordered at any price.

He did tell me a funny story about the machines. He said when he was building the new shop he bought and built (with an old milling machine) many new (to him) pieces of equipment, and as he said in the interview, he rebuilt many, adding his own controllers, jigs, etc. He basically stripped, refaced and repainted all of them in a matching color (green) when he was done. some of the equipment was quite old when he bought it, but it all looked pristine when he was done.

A budding machinist came into his shop and said, "man, it must have taken you forever to find all these machines in the exact same color!".....:)

Made me chuckle anyway.

Joe

This cartoon was done by one of Ernie's clients many, many years ago...I believe he was an animator for Disney. It's nice when people make this kinda stuff for you.

Why would someone like Ernie, selling cues for $2K - $75K+ want to go backwards and sell $250 cues like Dane Janes. Are you saying production Joss cues play better than Ginas? You are kidding right? Have you ever played with one of Ernies 4.2oz shafts? I have nothing against Dan or Joss cues...they are a great cue for the $$$, but they are not in the same league as Ginas.

As for pro players...there have been way more than 1 pro player use Ernie's cues. Hell...even Mike Sigel used one for a while. Nick Varner has always had Ginas in his collection.

Great job on the video Justin...you guys rock!

Justin, thanks much for the pictures and interview.

Ernie is a legend, a craftsman, a genius and an artist. I could go on all day describing the amount of respect I have for Ernie's work.

Your work is always appreciated,
Jimmy

Pros don't play with a Gina b/c they can't afford it.
I believe on the Taiwanese players can afford them.
Ernie told me he made one for Efren and it was stolen.

When I first moved to LA and started making money the first expensive thing I bought was a Ginacue. I still have it to this day.
It's his Rasputin model. Ivory points into an ebony forearm with silver and ivory dashed rings.
It's a thing of beauty.

Ernie is the man. The dude is a cue making genius, and he's the type of individual that would excel at any path he chose. His artistic design is off the chain.

40 years ago I met Ernie in Ye Billiard Den. I had an opportunity to buy one of his cues for $550. At that time I had about 1K, which was a lot in those days, I had built up over some deals I had made. I hesitated and my good friend Hy Sieger bought it. I bought a Paradise cue from Philly Joe Veasey who got busted and sold it to me for $85.
When I went up to Ernies with Justin I asked Ernie about that beautiful Ivory butted cue and Ernie said "Oh Yeah" and showed me a picture of it. "I just did some repair work on it for a collector" he said. It was the same beautiful cue. "Yeah", Ernie says, "he just paid $45,000 for it.". My heart just sunk to the floor when I heard that.

Ernie told me that he has heard many stories like that!!

When I started getting interested in pool, my brother and I went to look at at Macon's Billiard table that a freind of my brothers was selling. He wanted $2,500 for it and although it was in very good/new condition, we thought it was a bit much for a used table. He then mentioned that he had some cues that go with the table. He went into the house and brought out two cases and a handful of cues. In the cases were Ginas that Ernie had made for this guy (he had BIG bucks!!). The cues in his hands turned out to be a set of house cue that Ernie made for him. All of them were very very early Ginas. The house cue set were Titelist' and contained 4 cues and two bridges. Needless to say we took the table. A year of so later my brother needed some cash for something and wanted to sell the cues. Not knowing their future value, I agreed and have been kicking myself ever since.

Russ....:(
