Pictures of Ernie Gutierrez's (Ginacue) shop

He takes ONE year between cuts on his shafts.
Likes the yellowish/orange shafts himself.
And gets mad talking about those who copied his work. WOW!

Thanks justin for the video, not only do you bring us some of the bast pool matches out there but now your bringing us so much more. TAR is the best thing to happen to pool ever and we are lucky that two guys that truly love the sport are running it.

Gina shop

Damn you Justin I think you just ruined my whole year possibly my entire cue making career watching that video. I don't think I will ever have fun again. I just wonder if it is to late to have Mid-West Waste stop buy and throw all my cr@p in the back of the garbage truck and haul it away before I get any more depressed. Man what a great thing to do I wish you could get all the Masters before the retire it is great to see that passed along.
Great job Justin
Thank you Ernie for sharing

The only thing I think I might have him beat at is I do have a Suzuki Hayabusa 1300 that will do like 140 -150 in the 1/4 mile and like 210 mph on the top end but I would be scared to race if I lost then there is no hope

Anybody who would ride a motorcycle at 200+ mph is either completely insane, or wishing to die...jmo. All it would take is hitting a pebble on the track, and you're done...

Thanks for the pic of the "too tight gang". As one of my lady friends said;"damn those shirts are snug!!". LOL!!! Just a little about the guys in the pic. Ernie of course you know.
Teddy the guy in front is a creative guy and architecht in his own right and very articulate. Teddy is Ernie's good budy and motorcycle riding partner. He also used to own Players. The toughest Action spot in Los Angeles where all the monsters used to get in action. Jean Robert Bellande (Tall Bobby) was always there holding court gambling with the best. Efren was there, SHannon, any body who came to LA came to Players. THis is where Santos gave Jennifer Chen the 6,7,8, and the breaks and drilled her. (on tape by JJ). Some great memorable action games at this missed spot.

JJ, the tall man in the back is a monster. First he used to do hair back in Philly. He did Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Screamin' Jay Hawkins (I am so not worthy), etc. hair. He fell in love with pool and , Freddy you should remember him from the Ye Billiard Den days, when he played all the champions in one pocket. He then began being the first vidoeographer of great matches. He first did the LA Open in the 90's where every great player played. Banks, Nine Ball, One pocket. He's got Jersey Red, Hawaiian Brian, Mark Tadd, as well as the champions of the day. Some of the stuff he's got are Mike Sigel in an all around with Efren (9 ball, Banks, and one pocket), Cecil Tugwell vs Keith McCready, Alex Pagulayan vs Francisco Bustamante (one pocket) where Francisco didnt know how to play the game except for his 8 and out technique and ran 17 balls and out. He has the greatest collection of money games bar none.
The Asian guy is a fan.
Where else but in pool could you get a Black, a Latino, a Jew, a Asian, and a brilliant young man from the midwest all together in a room talking about the thing they love. To me this is what pool is all about. The friendships and the acquaintances that Ive made in pool rooms across this country and the online forums cannot be equaled to anything else.
PS I tried to get Tall Wayne who is a good friend of Ernies up there too but he had to work. Wayne is a Canadian from the cold parts and one of our top one hole players on the west coast. That would top off the combo.
Justin and Chad thanks so much for your hard work and effort. Next time youre out here we try for Tad. Maybe we can make a docu like a Michael Moore film; Hunting for Tad! Much Love for TAR!

Travis,

You may be pretty fast in a straight line, but for an old guy, Ernie fricken flies through the canyons!! He is a great cue builder and an accomplished sport bike rider.

Ride safe and keep the shiny side up!

Russ....

I have been to his shop many times, JJ is great-he is just the nicest man and a pleasure to know.

The pics here are great but they dont capture everything thats there, it would take alot more pics-hell a video to show all the tools Ernie has built over the years, And the motercycles in the back are awesome too, that shop is amazing, His inventory of ivory is huge and wood too,

Thanks for posting up the pics, you did a great job and its nice to share them with other people who cant make it out there to see his shop.

he might be the most creative and artistic cue maker ever-or something similar to that, I perfer the hit of the Szam's over the Ginacues, but Ernie's work with silver is amazing. I have hit balls with alot of Ginacues and there are some that (to me) play as good as anything.

Ernie is amazingly talanted!!! And a great guy too!!!

I don't go to Ernie's shop too much anymore. Every time I do he shoves a broom in my hand and tells me to get to work.
He knows just what I'm qualified for.

Let me make one thing clear. Ernie Gutierrez is a GENIUS! Along with Tad Kohara and Billy Stroud, Ernie elevated the art of making cues and made them into collectors items. His designs have been the standard by which other cue makers have been judged for many years. Ernie has been an innovator throughout his career, coming up with new designs that continually raise the bar.

Ernie has been married to his wife Lucy for over 30 years now. She is about the prettiest and sweetest gal you could ever meet. Lucky guy! Oh and one other thing, Ernie plays pretty fair Banks! So don't get too froggy when you visit him.

And another thing, if you order a cue and Ernie says one year, you can mark it on your calendar! And if you change your mind, a dozen other people will be happy to take your cue.

I have driven one of my cars 178mph once and many times at 150mph for miles, not just upto 150 and back down, I wouldnt get on a bike for a picture let alone ride one, i'm scared to death of them and already have enough back problems.

I just woke Keith up because I thought I heard a mouse in the kitchen!

Anyway, I asked him if he knew this guy in the pics, and he knew them all. He loves seeing pictures from California, and so that is why I showed it to him. Thanks so much, JCIN, for all that you and TAR do. This is a godsend to those of us on the East Coast to get a flavor of the California pool scene.

I would dearly love to have that vintage video of Cecil and Keith. Also, Keith said he and Ernie played a big money game one time, but that's a topic for another thread.

Keith said the one guy in the picture was "Teddy the Greek," his old buddy. The older African-American gentleman is an old-time campaigner, used to go to Bellflower and hung out in the Valley. Keith said he remembered seeing him when he was 13 years old out and about.

Keith said Ernie looks better now than he did back then! In other words, he hasn't aged a bit. :grin-square:

Great pictures. Thanks again.

JAM Ill look for that tape for you and make a copy. I think I got a tape also of Keith playing the notorious Hawaiian Jimmy. It might take me a while. Those boxes are stacked.

Ok I have no idea - why are his cues called Ginacue? Is that his wife?

Sorry if he explains that in the interview but I haven't watched it yet. Saving that for the hotel later this week.

Watchez,

If I remember correctly, the name comes from his daughter.

Wow, absolutely awesome video. Justin, the interviews you have done so far have been informative, entertaining and extremely well done. Thanks alot for alll the effort you guys put in and please keep these amazing interviews coming.

Ernie's Bikes

Yeah there are no canyons to ride here just a lot of drag racing/street racing a lot of action on it too. If i remember right didn't Ernie get a speeding ticket a couple years ago for like 150 mph in the canyons just what I heard through the cue maker grape vine. If so that's awesome I hope I'm still given them hell at 67 years old.

It was awesome to see the gleam in Ernie's eyes when he said "...some of the fastest on the hill". LOL

Teddy told me stories about a few of their rides and it was pretty strong. Maybe we can do a Cuemaker Motorcycle All Around Challenge? Each guy puts up a cue and the winner gets them both. A run through the canyon and a 1/4 mile. If you die you forfeit. :D
