Narcissistic personality disorder

Definition
Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. They believe that they're superior to others and have little regard for other people's feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

Narcissistic personality disorder is one of several types of personality disorders. Personality disorders are conditions in which people have traits that cause them to feel and behave in socially distressing ways, limiting their ability to function in relationships and in other areas of their life, such as work or school. In particular, narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by dramatic, emotional behavior, in the same category as histrionic, antisocial and borderline personality disorders. Narcissistic personality disorder treatment is centered around psychotherapy.

Symptoms
Narcissistic personality disorder symptoms may include:

Believing that you're better than others
Fantasizing about power, success and attractiveness
Exaggerating your achievements or talents
Expecting constant praise and admiration
Believing that you're special
Failing to recognize other people's emotions and feelings
Expecting others to go along with your ideas and plans
Taking advantage of others
Expressing disdain for those you feel are inferior
Being jealous of others
Believing that others are jealous of you
Trouble keeping healthy relationships
Setting unrealistic goals
Being easily hurt and rejected
Having a fragile self-esteem
Appearing as tough-minded or unemotional

Although some features of narcissistic personality disorder may seem like having confidence or strong self-esteem, it's not the same. Narcissistic personality disorder crosses the border of healthy confidence and self-esteem into thinking so highly of yourself that you put yourself on a pedestal. In contrast, people who have healthy confidence and self-esteem don't value themselves more than they value others.

When you have narcissistic personality disorder, you may come across as conceited, boastful or pretentious. You often monopolize conversations. You may belittle or look down on people you perceive as inferior. You may have a sense of entitlement. And when you don't receive the special treatment to which you feel entitled, you may become very impatient or angry. You may also seek out others you think have the same special talents, power and qualities — people you see as equals. You may insist on having "the best" of everything — the best car, athletic club, medical care or social circles, for instance.

But underneath all this grandiosity often lies a very fragile self-esteem. You have trouble handling anything that may be perceived as criticism. You may have a sense of secret shame and humiliation. And in order to make yourself feel better, you may react with rage or contempt and efforts to belittle the other person to make yourself appear better.

Causes
It's not known what causes narcissistic personality disorder. As with other mental disorders, the cause is likely complex. Some evidence links the cause to a dysfunctional childhood, such as excessive pampering, extremely high expectations, abuse or neglect. Other evidence points to genetics or psychobiology — the connection between the brain and behavior and thinking.

Risk factors
Narcissistic personality disorder is thought to be uncommon, affecting less than 1 percent of people in the United States. It affects more men than women. Narcissistic personality disorder often begins in early adulthood. Although some adolescents may seem to have traits of narcissism, this may simply be typical of the age and doesn't mean they'll go on to develop narcissistic personality disorder.

Although the cause of narcissistic personality disorder isn't known, researchers continue to learn more about the factors that may increase the risk of developing the condition. These risk factors may include:

An oversensitive temperament as a young child
Overindulgence and overvaluation by parents
Excessive admiration that is never balanced with realistic feedback
Unpredictable or unreliable caregiving from parents
Severe emotional abuse in childhood
Being praised for perceived exceptional looks or talents by adults
Learning manipulative behaviors from parents

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I think I may have this disorder!
I dearly hope it's the adolescent hormones and that it doesn't last.

1. I like to have the best of everything. I don't but I'd LIKE to.

2. I monopolize conversations- I don't mean to, but I just have so much to say about a lot of subjects! :sorry:

3. I belittle people I believe to be inferior- I know I'm a douchebag. People I consider inferior include ignorant self righteous outspoken activists, emotionally and psychologically depraved individuals, and sycophants.

4. I believe I'm special... aren't I mommy? :sorry:

5. I sometimes fail to recognize other peoples emotions and feelings. Then again I've always been a bit thickheaded about these sorts of things.

6. I fantasize about power, success and attractiveness. Who wouldn't? (Is this my inner Narcissus speaking?)

7. I am jealous of others. When I see all those pretty Ginas I can't help it.

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=105418

You remember this thread Eric, where you rep-whored, and said that you would retire from the rep-game after reaching the #1. (post 31).

I am sorry you didn't keep your word about stepping down (since you still ask for rep, nice being #2), but I am gonna repeat the words I gave in that thread.

"I am sorry Fatboy, but this is not the way to earn rep from me"

I don't understand your obsession for the whole rep-game. I really don't.

Also, if I read correctly here the past week, someone had a quote from you where you said something similar to "Doug is all about wanting pity and rep". I tried to dig up that quote now, but can't find it, so I will delete this if it is not true. If that's true it is the most disgusting thing I've read on this forum, and I am glad that I didn't read it in the thread you wrote it.

Doug is now in serious pains, and is actually dying from us, and I am now having big problems explaining what I feel about this thread and the whole rep-whoring, so I'll leave it at that for now.

EDIT: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?p=1683446#post1683446
I found the quote in post 10 in this thread. Still don't know where you posted it and if it is taken out of context.

Roy, that quote came from a thread called "As a favor to me", which was deleted, partly due to Fatboy's tasteless comments. It was not taken out of context, that quote was Eric's entire post.

I happened to save that one, as I thought it was something that should be remembered.

And you're right, now is not the time for rep whoring.

Depending on what kind of operating system or browser you have, you might be able to hold on the "CTRL" key and press "+".

It worked! Thanks!!'

Edit: I sent him a rep. That's what rep's are for. A means of acknowleding meaningful or helpful post/threads especially where the poster has gone out of his/her way to be helpful to another person, the forum or pool in general.

Wow this place can be so brutal at times it is as if most of the posters are just setting here waiting for a reason any reason to jump down someones throat... You know everyone loves Smorgie and everyone feels for Doug and his family as he means alot to anyone that has posted here or been a part of these forums. I should probably keep my mouth shut and just move on to another subject but it is hard to do when you see two of the better posters on AZ drawing so much negative attention....

First off sooner or later Doug will be passed on the rep board some of the posts here sound like they are coming from posters that are just jealous of the rep system. Doug will always live in my heart and will always be a legend in my mind here on the board with the way he posts and makes everyone laugh. I have shot Doug several good reps of late to help keep him a top the board as he has repped me several times in the past to help me get started ... Doug has always been good to me and I have enjoyed my time here on the board and alot of it has to do with Smorgie and his posting ... I do not think that Doug would approve of several of the posts here on AZ attacking Fatboy as some of you have done here ... Doug is a much classier act then some of you are showing here... As Joey A pointed out Doug had a way of saying what he had to say without some of the posts that some of you have made in this thread ... Read Joeys story here about what a class move Doug put on Buddy Hall to admonish him without embarrassing him ...

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=133547

Fatboy is a good guy and long time contributor to AZ and not only to AZ but to this great game we all love ... Our game struggles enough without all of us attacking each other over this rep thing ... If you don't apporve of his post certainly there are other ways to make this known without attacking him in the manner many of you have done here. Sooner or later someone is going to pass Doug once he is no longer here no matter how many of us do not want to see that day come. I feel sorry for who ever that person is because I have a feeling that this thread here will be repeated over and over. As for abolishing the rep system that is foolish also ... If it helps AZ to get more hits and be a source for more people and more hits on this pool site then I see it as a good thing ... It brings more people here to learn about this game that seems to always struggle to reach more players. Why would you do away with something that helps to bring more people to this game we love and helps to keep them coming back ...

I think there is alot of room here on the boards for Doug and Fatboy and the game needs both of them. But if Doug has to live on in your minds as the top rep getter then I think alot of you missed the boat on Smorgie ... He loves rep but is alot more to me then the top of the rep board DOug also does not mind asking for rep so why is it some complain when Eric does... Doug is a bright spot in my day ... A person with a good heart and alot of pool knowledge and a great love for all of the posters on AZ and his friends ... I know he will be passed on the rep board but I also know he will never be passed in my heart and that is where he will live in my world ... You see the rep board is only temporary if he has to live there for alot of you then sooner or later you will no longer have him ... But put him, his luaghter he brought to all of us , His wit and and love for the game and posters of AZ in your heart and he will live on in all of us for ever ... That is where Doug should be in our hearts forever and ever ... Doug once sent me a rep that said you know you are my favorite poster ... I think that Doug is one of the few people that could send me a rep like that and I knew deep in my heart he meant it ... And I also knew that he probably sent that message to every AZ'er he repped because he loves all of us and to him we all our his most favorite ....

Give Fatboy a break he is a great asset here and a great guy ... I love reading his posts ... Just as I love reading Dougs ... Losing Doug is going to be very hard here and for me ... Losing both Doug and Fatboy over some of the comments here will be unbearable ... Doug should mean more to all of us then just the person at the top of the rep board ... Keep him in your heart and remember him always ....

Do you really believe all of this? My thoughts on the bolded parts, in order:

This forum had no shortage of "hits" prior to the rep being implemented into the forum.

People come to this forum specifically because of the rep system (which no stranger outside of this forum even knows about)? This silly rep thing is not known nationwide and people do not flock here to "experience the azb rep system".

Someone that was never really into pool is going to somehow learn about this unknown rep game and decide that they're all of the sudden interested in the game and love the game because of the rep software installed on this forum?

I'm starting to see a trend here. People that were not members or lurkers prior to the rep system, give it entirely too much credit. People that were here prior to the system understand what a farce it is and how it leads no creedence to anyone's worthiness. The comments are nice and I think everyone enjoys that aspect of the software. How can anyone not see (just from the comments alone "hit me back with rep") that it cannot be taken seriously when judging someones character because of the game a lot of people play by repping friends needlessly in order to bump them above someone they don't like. There's simply no merit or worthiness to the numbers. The comments that only the two people involved get to see is where the merit really is.

I beg your indulgence for a moment. This thread brings to mind an old joke I heard long, long ago.

God sent an angel to the King of Babalonia to ask him if he would like a Commandment. The King asked the angel what a Commandment was. The angel replied that a good example might be "Thou shall not steal." The King responded that he didn't want one because if his people were starving they may have to steal food from the Assyrians to survive.

Then God sent the angel to the King of Assyria who was asked the same question by the angel. The King also asked what a Commandment was. The angel replied that an example might be "Thou shall not kill." The King replied that if the Babalonians invaded their land to steal their food, they may have to kill them to protect their property.

Now God sent the angel to Moses, the King of the Jews. The angel asked Moses if he would like a Commandment. Moses replied, "How much are they?" The angel answered they're free of course. Moses quickly responded, "Fine, I'll take ten!"

The Genie from the magic lantern screwed up one day and God put him into exhile for 100 yrs. Then he was released, put back into a lantern and tossed onto Miami Beach for a test run, after which he reported back to God. Well how did it go for the first time out in a hundred years, asked God??

Well a pool player picked the up the lantern, rubbed it just right and I awarded him 3 wishes. Yes, go on said God. Did he wish for the Standard deals?? Oh yes said the Genie. Nothing has changed in 100 years. He wished for a mansion so I got him a nice place about 50% larger than Madonnas. For his second he just wanted a little harem of girls so I got him a dozen gals to take care of his pleasures. The third was a little funny though.

God said, well for his third did he want millions of dollars or to shoot pool like Efren. The Genie said no , he had just hit the powerball for 118 million a week before and a month before that he had won the US Open, so the fellow could shoot good pool already. God said oh yes I know who you are talking about now. This is a very important man. I have blessed him to the max and he is set to bring about a resurgence in pool in the US. I am so glad he found that lantern!!! This is great. By the way what did he ask for as his third and final wish?? The genie said "Well he said that he wanted to be 'hung like a nigga' so of course I had a group of these weird looking guys called KKK to come in his mansion and they hung him up on a street light" God just dropped his head. That's the way it has been going for pool, and by the way Genie you are back in exhile....
