Rating One Pocket Players

Of coarse in Bensingers Billiards in the 60's. Artie B. and The Beard figured it would be an interesting game. Right???

You're kidding, right? I remember Charley Duvalier & the Herrick
brothers playing one hole in Clarksburg, WV, in the 50s when
you hardly heard of the game in most pool halls in the country.
One pocket was all we ever played at the old Strand Pool Room.

Ok. I take Evgeny Stalev ;)

I saw Evgeny play Efren with 7-8 handicap. They played 20gbp (40usd) per rack.
Evgeny wasn't motivated and lost few racks and quit.

Later in the evening Evgeny played Bustamante. I saw Evgeny making amazing shots, his motivation was high. Later I saw Busty paying him some cash and leaving the table with frustration on his face.
I asked Evgeny how much he won. He said "200 pounds (400 dollars), score 5-0". I asked how much he got weight, Evgeny answered "Nothing of course, Bustamante cannot play One Pocket"

Later I saw him beat Efren for few racks also.

That happened in Cardiff, either 01, 02 or 03.

I don't know how much Evgeny's Pyramid career has taken from his pool skills, but I believe he's one of the top One Pocket players in the world today, still.

I'm not a gambler, if I was, I could take easy 5k from you Jay ;)

Ronnie Alcano gave lot's of credit to "russian boy" about 1pkt also..

Busta plays 1pkt now. I seen him dismantle A top 10 player who is one everyone's list playing 6 ahead two sets. His game has come a long way the last two years.

At one time I did beat everyone that I played, playing 9 ball.1972 to be exact. I quit playing around 1974 ,and then returned around 1981. The only player that I didn't play was Lassiter. I honestly don't think I would of beaten him if we had of played. I'm pretty bad on years, but around 1984 I think I could of given any American player big problems playing one pocket. I remember 3 one pocket tournaments that I finished second twice and third once. All around the same time.Joyner beat me 5to4 in the finals of the US Open in Kalamazoo, I couldn't sleep the night before the final match. Too nervous, I never have been regarded as a tournament player. Same thing happened to me in Roanoke Va.when Dave Bollman defeated me 5 to 4 in the finals. Mike Sigel beat me in the semi finals, the year Varner won in ,I believe Baltimore.

Billy,
I really didn't put two and two togather. You were the guy my grandfather said would have beaten everyone for twenty years playing nineball. He refered to you as "9ball Billy" and he was very impressed with you and Jimmy Marino. If you do not mind why did you quit playing when you were in your prime? also did you ever play my grandfather (Don Willis) when you were younger? I am glad to see you playing again, and it's good to see somebody that will get in and bet. You are a true gunslinger best of luck.

Stalev is a good one-pocket player and so is Ike. However, Jay you might want to back Richard Grenier instead of Ike, since Richard has destroyed Ike every time they have played. I believe Rich told me he beat Ike something like 15 straight games the last time they played in Vegas.

That's why they call him One Pocket Rich!

Of coarse I was kidding, but knowing the Beard it was almost believable.

That made my day to say the least. That kind of a compliment coming from Don Willis made me feel young again.Does anyone, anyone want to play some nine ball?Just kidding. The answer to your question is ,no I never had the privlidge of playing Don Willis,he was before my time.Don played other games besides pool, and played them at the highest level. I've often heard from in the know people tht Don may of been the best nine ball player ever.

Billy,

You said that you never denigrated Grady in any way but I think you know full well that you were denigrating him to leave him off of your list. Now I know it's your opinion and all but given that Grady has played all the greats and won against them in match-ups and in tournament play I really think that you know that he should have been included on your list despite whatever differences you have with each other.

I respect you and your contributions to this forum as well as your commentary and insight.

I think however that it's a little inflammatory to leave Grady off the list and not even acknowledge someone who has beaten you by giving you weight.

For me personally guys - I'd pay for some pay-per-view to see the grudge match. :-) Hey Action Report - you reading this - here's the next one. :-)

This is one mans personal and subjective opinion. Someone who I respect. Its not going into some time capsule or etched in rock to be dug up in the 25th Century. Its his opinion and he has a right to it. Enough already. Its only inflammatory if an EGO is involved. Get over it.

Lets get over this

John,
I would like to get past this, Grady is a true champiion ,but then again there are a lot of true champions that are left off the list. Are you saying that I denigrated them as well? I'm sorry you disagree with me,but my intentions were not to denigrate anyone.Just my opinion, and I could be wrong about my rating, but once again that's my opinion.

By the way John, I don't believe we ever met, have we? But yet you implied that I knew full well that I was denigrating Grady. That took a lot of audacity to make a statement like that about someone you don't know. I take that as a denigrating and offensive statement. And that also is my opinion.

Well John, I don't know about you, but I myself prefer someone to be honest with me, even if it's brutal honesty, instead of being patronized. You don't know Billy, and perhaps he prefers to be honest with everyone by leaving Grady off his list. He has every right to, it's HIS OWN opinion. And I have to agree with Billy that it took alot of audacity for you to call him on that.

Well, where's McCready on your list, Billy Baby? :D [Just kidding.]

Don't sweat it, Billy. One thing you will discover about Forum Land is that everybody has a blessed opinion. :p

You have every right to include whoever you desire on your list based on experience and observations. In fact, your opinion should hold more weight than many others, just because you've been there and done that. Some posters -- in particular, I am talking about the young'ns -- are in their twenties and thirties. Do you think they REALLY know how good some of these one-pocket players are? ;)

I would tend to give more weight to the opinions by the persons who actually lived and breathed one-pocket, and there you have it.

How about Strawberry? I know he's gone now, but around D.C. area, he was Mr. One-Pocket Extraordinnaire! Always got to root for the hometeam! :)

Hey Billy...

This is a little off topic, but after reading all of these awesome threads that you are contributing to, I have noticed that in the entire hsitory of pool and billiards, hands down you have to be the player with most nicknames... just how many do you have? lol

I've heard quite a few mentioned in the posts, and I remember you being referred to as "Thousand Dollar" Bill about 20 years ago - but it's like everywhere you went or moved you earned a new moniker. Do you have a list? lol I know it's off topic, but it I find this very interesting.

In Dallas, there is a guy named Louie who calls him "Dammit Bill".
