ray cool cat martain

I took a lesson from Ray in his home. But it was years ago, but he would spend hours if you wanted. He had a nice room with a full size table.

He played out of CM's Place down there, near Clearwater.

I took a lesson from Ray at his home in Florida in the spring of 2002. Specifically we worked on my break. He is thorough, no nonsense and understands the dynamics of how the body moves in relationship to velocity, angle...one of the best hours I've ever spent and will always be greatful for the experience.

Ray has one of the sharpest minds in pool, with a keen sense of humor to boot. No accident he is in the HOF. It's a treat every time Ghostball posts on here. We should feel honored. Ray is a humble but proud man, who made it to the top of this profession. He faced formidable opposition too. Try a diet of Ed Kelly, Jack Breit, Johnny Ervolino, Larry Johnson, Steve Mizerak, Danny Diliberto, Lou Butera, Ronnie Allen, Richie Florence, Jim Rempe, Larry Lisciotti, Pete Margo, Nick Varner, Jimmy Fusco, Dallas West, IRVING CRANE, JOE BALSIS and LUTHER LASSITER! These are only some of the men he had to beat to win his championships. I'm leaving out a lot of other good ones too.

You left out the most formidable.
The earthquake..and i don't mean Keith.
He actually won a title while the ground was shaking, which is where
he earned the name Cool Cat.

Yikes . . .

Plus he wrote one of the most popular (and best IMO) pool instruction books ever . . .

holly how much for you to show me what he showed you?

This is one of the most impressive instructional videos I've seen. Video quality isn't the best but to be able to walk in cold, joint his cue and run 100 balls while stopping to explain his thought process is impressive. The discussion after he stopped playing about the mental aspect of the game was also great as he talks about people who lose their composure.

Unfortunately from another recent thread the room owner in the video Al Baron recently passed away.

If I was near Florida I would look up Ray Martin and seek out his advice.

Good point, pt109. Actually the San Fernando (near L.A.) earthquake hit at 6 A.M. on 2-9-71, so the guys weren't playing any matches at that time. But Ray had been well established as a "cool cat" by then. He won the world title that year, then again in 1974 and 1978. He still plays strong in his early 70's.

Thanx

What he did say was some guys who talk brave pulled out of the tourney.
He was there to win as long as the table stayed level.
And he is COOL...played him twice...we rap in a match.

Could have been some aftershocks though. I thought i heard a story about someone being 'safe' by a hair and then came the Earthquake or aftershock and he could just see it by a hair and he ran out.

Might have been an entirely different tournament- I have no idea.
