Ray Martin Sets the Record Straight

Ray, whoever said $50 per hour for lessons from you is too much, is just flat out trying to rip you off. That is MORE than a fair price. Unlike one other hall-of-famer that charges WAY too much.

Anyone that thinks $50 is too much is a jerk or ignorant. Or both.

Or someone at the poverty level, at which point they got bigger things to worry about than pool lessons.

One thing to remember...it is not what you learn during the lesson (regardless of who is teaching you)...it's how much you practice what you are taught, that tells the tale. You can take lessons on anything, from the best on Earth...but if you don't practice correctly, the lesson will have been a waste of time and money, and you'll see little or no improvement.

ALL the people who have taken lessons from Ray that I've met or seen have ALL massively improved. All of them. Not a single failure. They vary in skill level, but they made huge leaps. Many times, two whole letters, like a C player to an A player. Or a D to a B-. I have yet to meet a student of Ray that remained the same level.

$50 dollars an hour is cheap from Ray Martin. There are people who don't hold a candle to Ray in terms of championships and knowledge who charge a lot more than that. I just wish I lived closer so I could take advantage of it.

I have never been quoted a $50 an hour price from any top player or champion,it is always $ 75 an hour that I am quoted from people with less credentials .Yeah I would say who ever complained about $50 an hour from a champion and legend such as Ray would be considered ignorant .

I know...

I know Ray from the 70s and 80s. I know people who took lessons from him. They said he's an excellent teacher and it was money well spent. Their speeds went up.

I've been hearing for a long time now that my lessons are too expensive and that I do not teach all levels of players. To set the record straight - I charge $50 per hour in my home for any level of player. If I need to travel, costs change accordingly. This runs about the same as group lessons; however, you will have my undivided attention for an hour.

I highly recommend Ray Martin! What a wealth of knowledge he has to share, and at such a reasonable price too. Ray is a brilliant teacher! I learned a lot from him just by paying attention. Thanks Ray!

This will probably kill my book sales - but its true - (and I have even said this to Ray): Even though I have written a few books about pool, the only book that a pool player will ever need is The 99 Critical Shots in Pool.(Shots 54-57 are a straight pool player's best friend)... It really does contain everything that you need to know to learn and master the game. It is THE ONLY book that I REQUIRE my students to have in their pool libraries. I bought my copy over 30 years ago, and I still refer to it almost every day.

It's the best $15 you'll ever spend - and if you get with Ray, you can send him your copy of the book and he will sign it. Plus, $50 an hour for lessons? Best deal ever!

Ray, Don't lower your price thinkng that will bring more business. If you're looking for more business then spend money promoting it. $50/hr is very reasonable. Your goal (if instructing is your calling) should be $100/hr and turning students away. Only 24 hours in a day.

Never forget it takes 5 seconds to lower your price but takes 5 years to raise it.

Another point. I assume you get more enjoyment from seeing your students improve than the money. If, lets say you charge $15/hr you're going to get a bunch of customers that really won't take the lesson seriously. It'll be a waste of your time and theirs. I know you don't want to waste your time and I assume you'd rather teach those that want to learn.

tap tap green to you brother, i've always thought as much about the "humble" book....it may not be as heavy as some others but it hit the nails on the head in many ways.

Rays the man

Great man ,teacher in the respect to pool period!!! I bought some very rare pics inscribed by famous pool players. Will not post the pics guys, everybody will being offering me money for these because you cant find them anywhere! He has signed many more of my collectables! Pool is simple just sink 1 ball after another!!! Rays the man!

No disrespect to Ray, but I give lessons for $49 an hour! Lol.

$50 is a good deal. Who's *****ing???

I'm kinda taking a break from the forums BUT, Ray gave me a lesson in Binghamton, NY for $50.00 in 1978! The lesson served me well but I wish we had done the One Pocket, instead:wink:

Try and get one-hour $50 lessons from Pete Sampras, Jack Nicklaus...or any other champion from any other sport. Their secretary won't waste their breath laughing at you, you'll just hear a click on the phone.

Wow, Ray, if you're in Largo then I'll definitely book time with you the next time I'm home. My mother lives in Clearwater so I'll be right in your neighborhood.

Seriously? I would pay you $50 to sit in a room and listen to your stories, let alone learn from you.

Most "qualified" instructors (certified) would charge $75+/ hour from what I've seen. Ray, you should be pointing your ears to others that are in the know and appreciate what you would have to offer them, and pool in general. You would not be hearing these things at all. No justification is required.

Thank you for all the great pool you have given us over the years. I used to watch you play at Ray Abrams' 14:1 tournaments in Livonia, MI in the early 70's. Very fond memories all!

I don't get it, someone would complain about paying Ray Martin $50 a hour for a lesson when they could have come to me and had a reason too complain..lol. I would pay Ray that much just have a coffee with him and pick his brain for a hour...Ray your way under priced for your level...jmo

I second the idea that I probably owe Ray money from what I learned from 99 critical shots. Not only is that book still relevant but it's properly written for the intermediate to advanced player in a no-nonsense no BS style from the perspective of a World Champion.

$50 an hour for this man's time is tantamount to theft and is charity on Ray's part. I know people with far less credentials who charge much more.

Reminds me to get my ass in gear and take some lessons from one of the great Taiwanese coaches here while I can.
