road players

Joey, I beat Ernie out of $200 when I first moved to N.O.

I didnt know he was a road player....

You are in the minority. Trust me. Ask any of the old timers. You're not far away but missed Ernie's best years as did I. :D

Ernie as NEVER had a job other than gambling and he never booked.

One guy I know driving from Tulsa to Orlando had to work at a greasy spoon in Arkansas for three weeks to get enough money to fix his broken car.

Yea, I wish I could play that well:wink:

When a player has went busted in my town, I try to take them through the rounds and stake them. This way we both get to make an extra $500.

this guy was hanging around my poolhall for awhile...he asks me for 5 dollars and then 20 minutes later asks me if I have change for a hundred. in that 20 minutes he talked to no one..so he had the 100 all along. lol. He's cool in my book tho. I just didn't give him anything for free.

You must not have heard him correctly, I doubt that he only asked for 5. He would ask a homeless man for at least 50.

I've seen him ask a guy that he just beat earlier that night out of $1000 to borrow a hundred..he was getting staked for the 2 $500 sets..but still...he is quite the tool...lol

Since a lot of the replies are people outright lying (the people needing money i.e. selling a stick multiple times then leaving) I thought I would post this one.

A couple of people from Indiana and one really good legend type player who is talked about on this board lots of times go broke in a small town, but the car has serious problems and they can't make it any further without repairs. They do have enough for a local motel and some food but we are talking 20 years ago and prob less than $50 among them.

Anyway, the car is done and the guys get a ride to the auto repair shop from the motel. When the repair guy says their car will be xyz dollars they reach for their wallets and "realize" they have left them in the motel room. The players then ask the guy if he will hold their ring for them while they drive the car back to the motel and get the money. The ring looked authentic and said superbowl champion on it. I would guess thinking that even if they didn't come back this guy had him a superbowl ring. Guess the joke was on him they didn't go back and the ring cost $2 and they had 20 or so of them.

this is a intresting thread amazing what the road players will do when it gets down to the nitty and gritty

Ernie was a pool playing son of a gun, and a hustler deluxe. He pulled up both socks and wiped his face with his hankerchief before every shot ( Earl Hiesler school of stalling) I saw him all over the south, and don't remember any losers. (he was careful) He had a bad car accident when he was younger and never quite played up to his earlier speed.
Rod.

i would like to have seen this ernie charactor play
i imagin u run into alot of really different types of people when ur on the road.even though it might not be like it is on color of money or the hustler i still think them guys that have lived on the road their whole life goin from pool hall to pool hall to tourny to tourny have lived a very different and exciting life
although i hear the retirement plan isnt too good lol

Rod,
In his later years, he would still pull up his socks, lick his finger and flattened his eyebrows with the moistened finger. :D (that might jog the memory of some of the people he beat). Glad you can confirm what I have observed about Ernie.

Why is it that people are "outright lying"??? Is it far fetched that someone sold a stick to multiple people and then left with the money and cue??? I have seen that happen twice myself and heard of it happening 3-4 other times. So it is completely believable to me.

So I assume that since you said "I thought I would post this one.", that you are outright lying with your story as well....

easy there big fella(grin)

I think he was saying that the stories were about people lying, not the story tellers lying.

Hu
